Dudgeon was sitting in his office one day, wondering whether he should go onto another case or see if the favor he got might fit into the treasure hunt at some point along the line, (since he never gets the next one needed...), when he went to the statistics page in City Hall. He noticed that ~15,000 people have moved into Sleuth City. That's when a question hit him. He wondered if Ben had any aspirations for how large this City could grow. He keeps making improvements to the city and keeping his subjects happy, so they tell their friends, who move in and enjoy the entity that is now a larger City. Dudgeon gets out his pad and paper, and jots off a quick note. Ben, how large did/do you expect the game to get? Do you have any major goals for it?

Hey if Sleuth becomes a video game, can I write/conduct the music!?!

*humms the old school Mario Brothers theme (I know you all know it!)*

I'm curious, Ben, why you picked the 20's ~ 30's for the time setting. Being a diehard Cthulhu fan, I've always enjoy this time period most, simply for the "look" of the age. Was it because this was a golden for detective stories, so to speak?

And how adding a temporary edit button for posts for when I forget to add words in my comments... like above for "golden age". Okay. Time for bed!

And add an "about" before "adding", too. I need sleep.

When I first started playing around with the game system, I was actually picturing it as set in a late 1800's gaslight era, around the time of Sherlock Holmes.

However, the first set of pictures I had available to use were from a spy themed party that Sunny and I threw with some friends a few years back. Those seemed to look more like the 20's-30's, particularly once I made them black and white.

Aesthetically, it was also easier to design around black and white photos than it would be with sepia tone pictures from an earlier era.

Once the era was set, that kind of dictated the writing style, as well. For instance, the feel of the game has been taken more from the gritty, hardboiled detective stories of the american writers of that time, rather than the parlour room social detectives from earlier british authors.

It doesn't really make perfect sense from a narrative perspective, however, since

oops...

It doesn't really make perfect sense from a narrative perspective, however, since fingerprinting and other scientific forensic practises were pretty widespread by the mid-war, yet they don't appear in the game.

Just a q. Earlier, someone mentioned cutscenes, which got the ol' gray matter shaking. Not working, per se, but at least a small tremor.
Two thoughts... so 2 q's, I guess.
First: How hard would it be to have an option of cutscenes or not? I mean, for example, when you click on the bar, there would be a cutscene of a hand (male or female, I'm assuming it wouldn't be hard to program the difference, much like the "MadLibs" thing in the intros) pushing the bar door open and entering, with ol' shady in the corner etc., before you get to the actual bar page. What I'm asking is: how hard would it be to be able to turn this option off?
Secundo: What about doing this in place of the pictures?

The animations could be done in Flash and would not be terribly big, as there would be no sound and everything could be done with cutouts.
I'm not sure if I've explained myself properly, but I hope so. Feel free to drop a PM if I'm not.

I welcome any expansion to the game. I still think the small city field offices is great idea too. Personally, the cutscenes are getting a little old and something new would be great. Also, the change that we can't receive Faction points during favors was a low blow. I liked it the way it was. :)
