Ok for all you experienced sleuthers...
-What good exactly is my contact? I just earned the barber, and she does NOTHING so far--the past 3-4 cases the only thing I can do is ask if I can do a favor for HER, or check out an alibi at most--I can't even ask her if she knows anything about the case.
-Q2--I'm not quite sure what order to get skills in. I'm torn between LOCKPICKING, SWEETTALKING, RULEBENDING, and advancing my thread analysis.
any advice?

Q3-Tried a featured mystery-yes I have become that addicted that quickly *hang my head in shame*--"THE SCIENCE OF MURDER" and couldn't even get my last suspect, "the mysterious investor," am I seriously lacking skills to play that mystery or are featureds way different.

Any answers from my more experienced PIs would be just marvy.

Contacts are good cause they never clam up on you. You get 2 contacts in each city: one PE and one WE contact.
Since you say the barber couldnt help you much, I assume you dont have the basic hair skill. Notes and FPs can be found at the scene without any skill. But hair and thread are different. You cant find this without the basic skill.

That brings me to your 2nd Q. The order of skills depends on your archtype and your play style. In your case Ill deffinatly go for basic hair, since the barber is your friend. After that it depends on what you mis most. Dont take both tough and charm interview skills. Just choose one direction and stick to it.

Q3- Yes featured mysteries are different! They dont work like the daily ones. Thus for some harder.

Concerning the contacts: when a npc becomes a contact? I mean, it is random or it becomes a contact after a number of favors done for him?

It's random. Below I copy and pasted a thread that may be helpful to you.

I already have the basic hair analysis skill; thats why I'm having trouble understanding why my contact is sofar worthless.

Probably just bad luck then. You just had few cases without hair. That can happen...
