I'm thinking about getting the Underworld Connections skill. Could anyone tell me what it does and how to use it!?

I think it is convenient, but would get most if not all other faction skills first.

I agree with jstkdn, as I have never had to quit a case due to a hiding suspect. (One of the townies has always given them up.)

it tells me I'd need to pay 15 skill points for it too - it seems very expensive :(

As long as the townies haven't clamme completely, I wouldn't say that you need it. I've never lost a case cos someone's gone into hiding.

yeah - me neither actually. perhaps I'll stay clear of it until i get some more usefulf skills!

I have lost cases because of a suspect going into hiding.
I have also had to pay over $2000 to find them on an Almost Impossible case.
Underworld connections is quicker than chasing townies for the location of the suspect and usually cheaper

You should have every skill if you're on almost impossible cases, though. Am I right?

Waiting until you have EVERY skill to do the impossibles may take a while. You should have all of your smart and a complete set of interview skills at the very least. Lock picking, hypnotism, and the others can make it much easier. I used Judge of Character, a full set of charm skills, and an almost full set of tough skills for suspects to solve Impossibles for a long time. I just recently aquired lock picking. I'm sure it just depends on how you like to work your cases though. :)

There's away to keep anyone from running away without buying this skill: tabbed browsing (in Firefox, Opera, etc.; any browser except Internet Explorer).

Here's what I mean. Let's say I've just started a case and searched the crime scene. Then I go to the map. I click on one suspect and ask about motives. Then I middle-click "Leave." This opens the map in a new tab. Then I (left-) click another suspect, and so on. When I've got all of the suspects on my list, I open another tab for city hall to use Research. Then I go through all of my suspect tabs (except the one Research cleared) and ask for alibis). Then I open a new tab for each townsperson and confirm the alibis (and ask for hints). When I'm done, I close the townspeople tabs unless they have PE or wanted a bribe for an alibi. Then I open a tab for the case file. I open a tab for each of the suspects on there (except the one Research cleared), then close all the ones with a valid alibi, or, if I'm lucky enough, those who can't possibly match the evidence. Then I ask about physical evidence, etc.

The point is, I open a tab to question each suspect ONCE, and leave it open the whole case. I never have to click the link to go back to that suspect, so they CAN'T go into hiding. It's like my detective is at all of their houses at once! They also can't be murdered, which I'm less happy about, because sometimes it eliminates a suspect for you.
