Tough Skills v Faction Skills

As a 'smart and charming' detective who has all the smart and charming skills (plus all the related faction skills), should I now go for the 'tough' array of skills (intimidations etc) or is it more advisable to go for the additional faction skills eg. pickpocketing .

I'm also wondering how useful skills like interrogation really are to a 'charming' detective. Would I need to load up heavily on tough gear in order to make them work?

Thanks for any advice : )

I would definitely go for both sets of interview skills. The more balanced your detective is with tough and charm the better. Doesn't mean of course that faction skills are useless. I like investigation even though it doesn't always work. Pick pocketing is neat but not really a must imo.

Bad Ass - many thanks. I'd pretty much come to the same conclusion. Problem now is I'll have to remember to use those tough skills and not just plough through on charm as usual!

And thanks Sumia - although I was aware of the connection between archetype and skill-point-spend, I had also thought there was another aspect to things. Since wearing charming gear can make a big difference to how charming skills operate I'd thought it would be the same if I tried to use tough skills.

Actually I found a helpful thread where the Sleuth Sindy and two other detectives discuss this very topic. Other 'newbies' may find it helpful so her is the link:

Just for the record ... judge of character is essential if you want both set of interview skills. That way you won't have to be reminded which one you want to use.

I wonder about this issue too. But I see that finding a gear balance for both tough and charm and has a few points on smart is very difficult.

Do you have any solution for it?

No problem. I was worried we were stuck with whatever our archetype is at the beginning but fortunately we're not. X)

I've personally noticed it's easier to build a charming + smart set than a tough + smart set but other more experienced players can comment on that if they wish. :X (though personally I like some of the tougher equipment visually haha :P I might have to swing to a tough set some day ohoho) I guess it depends on how much smarts points one wants to have.

The king tut's pipe for instance gives +3 tough, +2 smart and +3 charm. That's pretty balanced. It's an item you get as a reward after finishing an AVH.

The items for the reindeer outfit are also good. The reindeer coat gives +4 tough, +4 smart and +4 charm. There may be some folks around who stored those items and may be willing to trade or give them away.

Wow, impressive. :O It looks like something you'd get out Cairo. Yay for being AVH instead. Thanks for the info, BadAss.

I'm bummed I missed the reindeer costume event. It sounded fun (plus awesome equipment, hello). Need to dig around to see if it was a one time thing. ;__;

I think you'll need to put together a more balanced outfit if you're planning on using both charm and toughness, or toughness for those times when charm just doesn't cut it. That'll take a while and you'll gather skill points along the way. There's no use sitting on skill points in the meantime when you can use them to buy other skills that can help you along the way. For starters, you can put together an AVH/away from home city outfit with most of your charm stuff (since you have a lot of those) - something with high charm, a small positive smarts adjustment and (right now, probably) a slightly negative tough adjustment. When you're at home, you can turn up the charm and use a separate smarts outfit, or even just roll with your combo outfit to get used to it and skip a few trips to the locker. :P

With a standard-ish high charm outfit, just having the tough skills won't make much of a difference at all, especially the low-level ones; you'll need to buy more advanced versions of those skills after the basic ones, and the basic ones on their own don't do much. It'll take a while to gain enough skill points to get to those more advanced versions of the interviewing skills. I think you'd be better off picking up a few other skills before all that. Like BadAss pointed out, if you're thinking of using charm and toughness, you'll need Judge of Character - do you have that already? You'd mentioned that you'd already collected all the smart and charming skills; would that include hypnotism, surveillance, and underworld connections?

I see you're a Steeper; Hostage Negotiation is good for saving cases too, you might as well start reaping those benefits ASAP, since the caves/catacombs will be mean for a while longer. :D And I assume you have lock-picking, that's good too, and normally a skill people pick up early on. Stress Detection is a nice skill, and kinda cheap too.

[That turned out to way longer than I anticipated. I feel like I'm playing the Resistance. :P]

If you already have all those skills, I think pick-pocketing might be the way to go, because I don't think the tough interview skills (especially in their basic form, and that will have to be where you start - the advanced skills' total requirement is 29 skill points for the skill that works on suspects, and 24 for the one that works on townies. Pugilism is a neat bonus though; get that when you start building up your tough adjustments) are of much use. Without an outfit that can contribute a little to those adjustments, it'd be even more off. Of course, all of this is based on my experience, you may find out that different things work for you. If you have Judge of Character, watch your suspects and townies over different cases - if you sense some sort of bias to a particular technique, you could shift that way faster, but otherwise just know that the game can be that mean to all of us! I would like to stop typing now, and leave you with that inspiring message. :P
