I a little bemused.

I was doing a hard level favor for the Barber and picked up two threads at the crime scene. I had three suspects with false alibis and two of them didn't match either thread, which left one remaining suspect. However, when I accused him I was informed that I had accused the wrong person - that the killer was one of the suspects who didn't match either thread.

How can this be?

Looks like there were four fake alibis in that case.

Umm, did you check with the Fortune Teller?? It sounds like you didn't have all your suspects rounded up. Most levels can have +/- 1 suspects from the previous level. I believe Hard level cases can have up to 8 suspects, with 4 false, and 4 real alibis (1 of the false will be a Research alibi).

There used to be a table running around here that listed the numbers of suspects, real, and false alibis per case level. Might be an idea to go digging and see if you can find a copy of it.

I also take it that you don't know the formulas for knowing if a suspect is guilty or not?? (Might want to visit some of the threads here in the Newbie section if you don't.)

Just for your knowledge:

False alibi + Matched Evidence (IE. -- Footprint, Hair, etc.) = GUILTY
Witness Evidence Statement + Witness Evidence Statement = GUILTY

False alibi + Witness Evidence Statement = NOT NECESSARILY guilty (you need more to accuse)

There will be ONE suspect per case that has a False alibi, a Matched piece of Evidence, and TWO pieces of Witness Evidence against him or her. There will be up to three other people that have Matched Evidence, and up to five that have Witness Evidence. DO NOT RELY on the False Alibi and One Witness Evidence to determine guilt. You'll quickly become Shady's newest best friend if you do.

Also, if you do not have all the PE skills (foot, thread, hair, handwriting) your crime scene may not show all the evidence. E.g. If there is a hair at the scene and you do not have the hair skill then the crime scene will not list a hair which could very well point to your guilty suspect.

One little correction to Breitkat's otherwise excellent advise: a false/no alibi (A-) plus Witness Evidence (WE) is good enough to accuse. There will BE a second WE out there, but one is sufficient with a bad alibi. True alibis (A+) will never have two WE, but will frequently have a WE and a matching Physical Evidence (PE). The combination to not trust is a WE + PE + unknown alibi (A?).

PE + A- = Guilt
WE + A- = Guilt
WE + WE = Guilt (useful when A?)

WE + PE = DANGER (you'll need to determine alibi or a 2nd WE)

I usually follow the formula WE + False Alibi = Guilty, but several times I've had a suspect with a false alibi lie about WE and point to someone else with a false alibi. I end up accusing an innocent person. Has anyone else ever had this problem?

If you come across a case again where you have a WE + a False Alibi and you get an FA hit the back arrow and take screen shots and send them to Yeti.

The guilty suspect will always have 2 WE, a suspect with a real alibi can have WE as well, but will only have 1. But if you have WE + a False Alibi something went haywire.
