The exploits of the Icelandic football team recently may have inspired some of us to take a closer look at this tiny nation of 330,000 people.

There are some funny facts and trivia about this island that are downright quirky and bizarre. Like for instance;

10% of the population have an earnest belief that elves really exist, 80% at least keeps the possibility open and only 10% doesn't believe in elves.

A group of students developed a mobile app especially for Icelanders to check out if you have a blood relationship with someone you plan to have a date with. Considering that most Icelanders descend from the same group of colonists in the 8th century AD and have no family name, this is a pretty handy little tool.

A road under construction was detoured around a boulder because of the belief that this place was inhabited by elves.

Anything else you may know about Iceland and it's people? Feel free to share with us!

The volcano that disrupted international air traveling so badly in 2010 is named Eyjafjallajökull. I dare you to pronounce this name. Especially in the morning right after you woke up.
