Oh Belgium, why did you let me down. I should have known that playing on a 13th was a bad idea.

Belgium - Italy 0-2

So Portugal v Germany final then, with Germany taking the tournament?

Seems likely. But you never can tell for sure in this tournament.

First semi final between Portugal and Wales ended in a 2-0 victory for the first. It was mostly seen as the battle between two persona, namely Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. Or Brylcreem Bravado vs The Celtic Samurai.

In this case the slick pomade used by mr. Ronaldo turned out to be the secret weapon for the Portuguese side as he smoothly headed the ball into the nets. The choice of uniforms was also interesting. Mint green and scarlet for Portugal vs black & lime green for Wales.

Today world champions Germany will take on host nation France. Germany is always an opponent to be reckoned with but if you can elminate Iceland (like France did) who do you have to fear?

France - Germany 2-0

Old reliable Schweinsteiger proved to be unreliable this time. Germany gave the French a run for their money but their famous efficiency was nowhere to be found.

And so the finals will be France vs Portugal

Interesting detail, the Portuguese only ended 3rd in their group. Normally they would have been eliminated there and then if it weren't for the new format in which the best numbers three also could proceed to the next round.

You don't often see vague handballs like that paid in the finals.

FINALS: Portugal - France 1-0

Not the host nation but the underdogs have prevailed. And they came a long way! We all remember Portugal's first game against Iceland with a Ronaldo refusing to trade shirts with an Icelandic player. The same Ronaldo who would later throw the microphone of a journalist in a pond. The frustration and agony that they only ended 3rd in their group behind Hungary and Iceland.

But all that is forgotten now and so it happens that not Jean, not Johann, not John, not Juan but Joao can celebrate today.

heh I'm not sure if I've ever been more disinterested in a final of 'anything', and Wimbledon was pretty ordinary!

And it wasn't exactly riveting football either. Might be a final quickly forgotten by everyone I think. Not that Ronaldo will let anyone forget :) anytime soon!

At least it didn't go to penalties!!

Can someone explain the switching shirts thing? Is it a sportsmanship thing?

Yep, it's a token of mutual respect. Some players keep these shirts in a trophy room. Others might even auction it off later.
