New York, 1938
St. Regis Hotel
Rooftop Nightclub

"So there I was, staring down a barrel INCHES from death...and I told the man, 'darling REALLY, if you simply must shoot me do allow me to remove my earrings. They are Cartier, you know." Molly Maltese paused to take a sip of her Red Snapper, popping the olive neatly between her cherub lips before gnashing it to a pulp. "And the man was quite flummoxed, he said- I say, is that Riza Hawkeye?"

She rose, the group of rapt men in tuxedos and women in glittering dresses and furs murmuring their protests as she wended through their knees. But the apparition she was quite sure had been Riza Hawkeye had vanished in the crowd of New York socialites populating the exclusive terrace.

"Well, this place is a bit ritzy for Riza." she murmured, fairly certain her old acquaintance didn't make a habit of populating social-climbing fetes. And she reasoned, any time Riza had appeared before it was hardly ever for a pleasant cause. Well, maybe that was unfair. It just seemed she was more the swirl-of-furs-and-stiletto-daggers type than a frothy socializer like Molly herself.

Peering around, Molly saw nothing but the shadowed faces of revelers partially cloaked in the smoky haze. She had just been about to give up and go back to her companions when the most shocking hubbub began. Over on the north part of the terrace, she could distinctly hear the shouts of men and panicked screeching of females. Moving forward, she could just make out..

"Did you see... The Ambassador... who could have... murder! Someone has pushed the Ambassador off the building!" Molly picked up speed, expertly weaving through the crowd of panicked voices. Sirens already began to sound twenty stories below. Just as she grasped the ledge and looked over, an all too familiar voice sounded in her left ear.

"Oh hello there, old friend. Lovely breeze out today."

Before her stood Riza Hawkeye herself, looking utterly unruffled as several ladies fainted behind her.

"Guys, you know this is far from over. Sphinx is still out there. We might've killed the leader and Jack, the second-in-command. But that doesn't mean that the rest won't make an attempt to take over control and try to re-establish their power again. I have to do this, for all of us," Vulkie announced, while looking at each of the detectives for a moment.

The detectives exchanged confusing looks. Was she really going to do that? Leaving them, to tidy things up?

Grabbing her suitcase, Vulkie started to walk away, before looking over her shoulder and concluding: "I'll see you guys when the time is right. You can be sure of that."

The sunlight had just begun to peak over the horizon when the group of detectives finally made their way to the surface. Riza took a deep breath and let it out. It felt so nice to breathe air that wasn’t clouded by smoke fumes or that smelled like someone’s thousand-year-old sock collection. Though she was tired and battered, her shoulders felt strangely light. They had spent months traveling the globe following leads, being threatened, being attacked, meeting strange people, and fighting. And now, they had finally done it. It was over.

Vulkie announced that she was off to take down the remnants of Sphinx, to ensure that they would never rise again. It was a good idea, but Riza wondered why Vulkie was going at it alone. However, she didn’t have much time to dwell on the subject, as there was another matter she had to attend to. The remainder of the bedraggled bunch soon gathered around the truck where Arielle and company were waiting. Dr. Hoo gave an excited giggle and clapped his hands.

“We’ll head straight to Karachi to save Anais,” Riza said. Glancing around at everyone, she added, “Perhaps after we’ve all had a good wash and a rest.” Relief showed on the others’ faces. Truth be told, Riza herself desired nothing more than a long soak in a hot bath at the moment.

Ed chimed in. “I’ll need to head back to New York to make a full report. And I have to make arrangements for…Jasper’s body,” he added heavily. The group nodded their assent. Marc laid a hand on the man’s shoulder.

Riza’s eyes swiveled over to the side where Joseph and Arielle were talking in undertones. She wondered what they were discussing, but decided not to intrude. Instead, she wandered off and sat on a large rock a short distance away, facing the horizon. She drew her knees to her chest and closed her eyes as the blazing orange Delhi sun continued its ascent, slowly warming her face and enveloping her entire body.

If Molly was less than a lady, she would probably dropkick Vulkie for the soiree comment. Of course, how would she dropkick the oaf who snapped her ankle like a twig under her ungainly rear end?

Anyway. Molly gave a sniff and hobbled over to lean against the truck, mentally bemoaning her state although she encased it neatly with a slight smile that showcased her cheekbones to perfection.
Even though they were probably encrusted with filth. Oh lord.

"I'll need to head back to New York to make a full report. And I have to make arragnements for...Jaspers body." Ed said, laying his hand upon his shoulder.

"I believe I'll sojourn for a few days here in Delhi." Molly said thoughtfully. "I have a studio in the better part of town, and I think I'll have to go get my ankle tended to and a week-long stay in a spa before I join you. I have several knots in my neck and I'm sure I'll never soak the filthy scent out of my hair. Vulkie have fun saving the world or whatever trumped up lark it is you're off on now."

She attempted to flip her hair, but discovered it was firmly lodged into a birds nest and plastered quite alarmingly to one side. She gave a small whimper instead and wondered if there was anywhere nearby she could get a drink.

Tom Wilkinson glared at Edward from behind his desk. Everything was more FUBAR than before. Although Sphinx had been stopped, Edward ultimately failed his assignment. "Well?" Wilkinson asked. "Anything? No?"

Edward remained silent, hurting at the loss of the team he put together. Stanley, Jasper, Thomas...all gone from this world, and Edward was responsible. "I..."

"You what? You were drunk again?"

Edward said nothing.

"Your drunkenness has cost the lives of several people. Your team is DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU! TWO AMBASSADORS NEARLY DIED, THREE FEDERAL AGENTS ARE DEAD AND YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY!?"

Edward still remained silent.

"What of Marc?"

"He escaped." Edward lied. "I tried. After everything that happened in Delhi, I placed him in handcuffs, and I was overpowered by him."

"Uh-huh..."

"He's much stronger than you think."

"Edward, I cannot cover for your incompetence anymore. You had just one job. One! Bring him in alive, and you couldn't even complete that. Internal Affairs is conducting an investigation on you. Until the investigation is finished, you are hereby suspended. Give me your badge and your service gun, and get out of my sight!"

Edward left without a word. For the first time since Marie took his daughters and left, he felt so alone. He walked out onto the pier over looking the mighty Hudson River. Ed looked down at the stainless steel flask, and threw it into the river.

Insomnia had set in as Edward tried to fall asleep on his empty bed. He thought about Molly and how he missed his chance to take her on a date. The phone rang, bringing him back to reality. Edward rolled over and sat up to answer the phone on his nightstand.

"Hello?" He answered in a near whisper.

The voice on the other line made his blood run cold, the hair on his neck stood up. It couldn't be...could it?

"Edward," she said softly.

He covered his mouth with his other hand, and choked back a sob as a single tear rolled down his cheek.

Molly heard a peculiar choking noise on the other end of the line, and raised her eyebrows. Stretching her legs out on the luxurious down comforter gracing her bed, she cleared her throat awkwardly.

"I'm glad I got ahold of you- I was going to ask you to be a dear and run by the counter at Lintz' department store on 5th... I have an order for a perfume.. but you sound upset. Edward what is it?"

"I was suspended." Finally came over the line, and Molly bit her lip. She suspected as much might happen, but in all the turmoil she didn't want to be the bearer of bad news.

"Well." she said finally. "I desperately need my perfume, and you need something to take your mind off of this. I propose you meet me in Delhi. We'll see the sights for a day and then head on to Karachi. The others have already departed you see, and I'm feeling much better. The retreat has done wonders for me.

Why don't you come out here. I'll call my dear friend who's a travel agent. He can get you on a carrier plane out here tout de suite, just a few layovers."

Mute silence came over the line, and Molly smiled. "I'll assume thats a yes. I'll send a taxi around for you in the morning."

Not waiting for an answer, she hung up and began humming to herself. She realized she really must clean up this apartment. HA! Her clean... really she needed to secure a maid to clean up the apartment.

Laying back on her pillow, she let her auburn hair fall in a rich curtain over her silk pillowcases. A romantic sojourn with Ed before delving into another pell-mell mess of explosions, and chases and broken bits, stabbings, shootings and a very broad etcetera is just what she needed. He was probably going to be terribly depressed, she thought suddenly. Oh well. Whatever substance she needed to use to beat it out of him would simply have to do. She had her ways, after all.

This concludes Airs and Heiresses. Thank you to everyone who followed along. We hope you enjoyed reading the story as much as we enjoyed writing it.

Since most of the current RP group will be participating in NANOWRIMO, the next installment will not begin until December.

Please stay tuned to see more of the (mis)adventures of our assorted cast of characters.

*RPers bow and curtsy to the audience. Lights dim. Curtain falls.*

Thanks to all the wonderful RP-ers who have participated in the story, from the beginning and until the end.

What started as a small RP in the beginning, has eventually developed into an emotional and suspenseful rollercoaster.

If I might say so myself, I think this story has surpassed itself from what we've written before (but that's my own experience) :)

As per Miss Hawkeye's comment, our next story will (hopefully) begin in December. Until then, readers and RP-ers!
