It says that I have to click on the skills I want to learn in red writing but there is nothing actually to click. Any way round this?

Yep that's right. You can see what skills there are to buy and what they'll cost by clicking on the skill help link on skill point page. You've probably done that, I know, but the help hyperlinks aren't always obvious.
