This is a thread about music. All kinds of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, folk, film music... any kind you can think of. The questions can be about anything related to music: about composers, musicians (performers), styles/periods, musical forms, musical instruments, or about particular pieces or songs.
I'll start with a person.

Is it a man or a woman? Is s/he American, Asian, European, Australian, African or a penguin? :) Is it a composer, a performer or somebody else behind the scenes? That's all I can think of right now, but it should narrow it down :)

The person we're looking for is an American woman, a performer and, strange as it may seem, her music doesn't belong to any of the genres mentioned :). Her long and successful career began in the 1920s and ended with her death in the1970s.

1. Woman
2. American
3. Performer
4. Genre: other
5. 1920s-1970s

Was she a singer? Did she play an instrument?

No, not folk. She was a solo singer and (to me at least) had the most beautiful voice outside opera.

I don't know if she played an instrument, I never heard or saw her playing one. Her instrument was her voice. No, her life was far from scandalous, and she was married (and divorced several years later). She appeared in several movies, and she toured all over the United States and made one (as far as I know) tour in Europe.

Did she sing in her films?
Did she sing the theme song to any movies?
Did she die after or before 1975?

Yes, she sang in her films, but I don't remember if she sang any of the theme songs. She died in 1972.
Hint: all her songs belong to only one genre, she refused to sing anything else. Another hint: she played an important part in the civil rights movement.
