This is a variation on a theme of Francesca's "Who am I?" thread. The rules are the same, only in this case it would probably be best if we asked one question at a time :).
I'll start:
Its history goes back more than one thousand years.

Yes, Dany gets it :D
And yes, it's the silly kind of clue you can only understand after you've already found out in some other way :D

No, the clue was good, but in my case misleading. My historically-oriented mind automatically started searching the list of products that came to Europe after the discovery of the New World: potatoes, tomatoes, corn, turkey etc., but definitely not beans :D.
Ok, here's a new one.

Haha, I definitely would not have done that :)
Is it in Asia, Africa, North or South America, Australia, Europe, or Antartica? :) Is either the country or the city land-locked?

It's the capital of Antartica :D.
No, it is in Africa. The country is not land-locked, but the city is.

Is it North or South Africa, East or West? And does it lie above/below the Tropic of Cancer/Capricorn and the equator? (So handy to have a continent with all three :D)

A precise question which demands a precise answer :).
It is in North Africa, it's north of the Equator, and it lies north of both the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
