The heavy rain made the visibility much harder to see the man that Marc was chasing through the city streets. The sidewalks were slick with water pouring into the street. The chase started after a failed attempt on killing Marc, who had no clue why this man wanted to kill him. But then again, he could think of several reasons. They ran twisting and turning through alleys and then back into the streets on different parts of town. “STOP!” Marc yelled at the man. The man kept running.
The man kept his distance from the detective. Marc was only able to catch a glimpse of the mans feet as they turned around corners. Marc was out of breath as they stopped in front of an old abandoned apartment complex. “You have no where left to run, buddy,” Marc said to the dark figure. “Come on and get me, Marc. You’re right where I want you!” The man turned and ran into the building and slammed the door shut.
Marc swore to himself as he ran up the stairs leading to the closed door. Marc reached down and turned the handle. The door was unlocked. The man he was chasing was toying with him. The building was dark. There was no light except for what little the street lights outside gave out in the rain, which wasn’t nearly enough to depend on. Directly in front of Marc was a long hallway with six doors. Three on each side. Marc moved to the first door and kicked it open.
“ You can run,” Marc said, “but you can’t hide. I will find you.” He walked out of the first room and moved to the second door. Just like the first, that room was empty. He kicked in the third door. And walked in quietly with his revolver drawn out. “Where are you?” Marc whispered to himself. He turned to leave. As he turned around he found himself face to face with a masked stranger. “Here,” he said. The blow on Marc’s head knocked him unconscious.

Before anyone knew what had happened, the entire front window of Sami’s shattered into a million pieces, raining down glass on everyone inside. The air was rent with the sound of gunfire. “Damn it!” Ed yelled, “He brought backup!” Riza gritted her teeth and dove behind the counter as the line of fire directed itself towards her. She felt the impact as bullet after bullet embedded itself into the wood. Peeking out, she fired a few shots and heard the thump of bodies hit the tile floor.

“Ed! Do it now!” Riza yelled just as he punched one of the cronies in the face, and simultaneously took out another with a swift jab in the eye with a fork. He looked at her and began to run towards the table they had been sitting at. Grabbing a rectangular metallic can from underneath it, he wrenched off the pre-cut top and threw the contents onto the remaining men who were converging towards him.

“Hawkeye, fly!” he yelled, and watched as a flaming match flew through the air, landing on the ground before the men. Instantly they burst into flames in a giant plume. Horrible screams of panic and agony ripped through the air as they tried to put out the fire, but to no avail. Four of them ran to grab the now-unconscious mystery man, and jumped with him out of the shattered window. The sound of their shoes pounding the pavement echoed.

The one they left behind fell onto the ground as his flesh singed and began to peel from his face. Riza and Ed watched in silence. Soon the man stopped moving, as all that was left was a charred corpse on the ground. It was the sound of labored breathing that caught Ed’s attention.

Looking over toward the left wall, he saw a girl, seeming to be in her early twenties, clutching her chest and looking down with terror at the red stain which was slowly spreading. As she began to fall sideways, Ed ran over and caught her in his arms. “Hey, Miss, are you ok? Miss! Don’t worry, I’ll get you to a hospital right away, just hang on!” The woman looked up at the man who had caught her. She gazed into his eyes for a moment, looking like she wanted to say something. But before she could, the color began to drain from her face and her eyes began to close. Soon she dangled limp in Ed’s arms.

Watching tears begin to drop from Ed’s face onto the woman, Riza felt something stir within her.

The overcast sky stubbornly resisted to break even after a full night of heavy rain. The air felt humid although the heavens had dried up, for the moment at least. Zeo threw the butt of his smoked Chesterfield into a puddle, feeling absolutely sheepish. He hasn't contacted his favourite drinking buddy for months, and now he was to suddenly show up at Marc's doorstep asking for help.

Zeo needed to locate a man named Salvatore Costello, whom he believed Marc once knew. The worst of it was that, Zeo was not allowed to reveal to his friend the reason why he needed to find this man. "Federal Bureau classified information", was all Zeo could say. He foresee a cold shoulder from his friend; he expected nothing less.

As the thin detective rounded the corner to Lacrimosa's agency, his eyes shot wide open. The door to the office was knocked off its hinges. With one slick move Zeo drew and cocked his revolver. He inched into the office only to find files and bills tossed all over the floor. The room felt empty, like a disposed box of tissue. Whoever broke into the office had found whatever he was looking for and left.

There was a file left opened on the desk, one that was labeled "Von Schmidt", dated the summer of 1925. It revolved around a murder and a missing jewel, nothing especially impressive about it, except perhaps some hyped up press rumours at around the same time, Zeo could vaguely recall.

"Marc, where are you?" Zeo muttered to himself as he looked around the office. There was nothing he could do but leave. That was when he noticed the bullet hole on the wall out side. Zeo frowned, "What have you gotten yourself into, my dear drinking buddy?"

Zeo lit another cigarette, thinking, indifferent to people on the street gossiping nervously about the explosion that just happened at Sami's.

She was blond and maybe twenty-five. She hung limp in Ed's arms as he held her upper half of her body off the ground. Crimson red blood seeped out of the wound on her chest. "Miss..." Ed began, "hang on. I'm gonna get you to a hospital." Weakly, she raised her arm and placed it around Ed's neck. The woman tried to say something but couldn't. She inhaled deeply and more blood seeped slowly out of her chest.

Ed quickly ripped off part of his shirt and put pressure on the wound. "Someone get an ambulance! NOW!" he screamed. Few people reacted and deep in the background noise, the sound of a siren could be heard as the police were on their way.

Tears filled his eyes as he looked back down. "Don't die on me," he whispered, "just..hang on..."

Color drained from her face. Within a minute the color of her face had gone to a pale white. She would not hang on much longer. She tried to say something again, and only coughed up blood.

Ed could feel people coming around him forming a circle, each person wanting to help with something, but couldn't move. Tears fell from his face on to the woman's face.

Within three minutes after the gun shots had stopped, a woman had died. She released her last breath as the police showed up outside the restaurant, and fell limp into Ed's arms. Ed swore quietly to himself. And then he screamed it, "Damn it!" He closed his eyes drew in a deep breath as tears rolled down his cheeks.

Why did she deserve to die? She had so much to live for. Now she was dead. Could it be that she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or did God say it was time for her to go? Either way, Ed wasn't sure. He opened his eyes. Anger filled his mind. Hate toward the wounded man lying on the ground. He laid the body of the young woman down on the ground. As the police began to enter, Ed picked up the wounded gangster. And began to beat him.

The first punch was to the man's face, on the opposite side of where his face was singed. Blood poured from the man's nose. The door opened as the police officers walked in.

The second punch was in the same spot on the man's face and blood splattered on Ed's face and and. Who ever was standing next to him, was sure to get some of the splatter.

The wounded thug could only grunt with each hit he took. Again and again and again, Ed punched him in the face, in the gut, pistol whipped him across the head, screaming and swearing the thug for the loss of the young girl.

He stopped when the police finally pulled him off. Ed fell to his knees at the woman's body. "Ed..." Riza whispered, "Ed...let's go. There was nothing you could do, nothing I could do."

Ed said nothing but remained silent and got to his knees and turned around to see a man neatly dressed. Riza addressed the man as Joseph Zeo. "What are you doing here?" She asked.

"Marc's place has been vandalized." Zeo went straight to the point, "I think he's in trouble."

"Yes... he's been missing since last night." Riza quickly recovered herself after the witnessing the death of the innocent young girl. She'd be caught dead before revealing how much the girl's passing had really affected her. Nonchalantly she smoothed her jacket, "As to Marc's place being 'vandalized'... well, just say that I always find what's needed to be found."

Zeo put two and two together, his brow raised for a short second. "Oh. Given the scene I am now witnessing," he looked around the war zone that was once a restaurant, "I guess Marc's office had it easy. So, tell me, how does his disappearance relate to that Von Schmidt case he did over a decade ago?"

Riza was impressed with Zeo's observation and cool logic, but then, she wouldn't expect anything less from that man. She introduced Ed to Zeo, and then with a straight face she told him about what they had found so far.

"And so you decided to blow up a restaurant in pursue of a potential suspect?" Zeo commented mockingly. Riza gave him her infamous frozen stare. Zeo wipe off his smirk quickly. He then asked, "So, where do we go from here?"

"That reminds me, I need to pick up some clothes at the tailor's place," Vulkie thought, as she passed by Sami's restaurant. Strolling down the pavement, she heard a distinctive sound coming from Sami's. "Oh god, not another mental insane person who thinks he can outshoot someone.... I'll check it out," Vulkie said and carefully strolled back, her hand reaching in her pocket for her trusted old revolver from her dad.

Suddenly, five men showed up with tommy guns and started blazing gunfire, shattering the window of Sami's restaurant while they proceeded to clean the room of every living creature.

Vulkie immediately ducked behind a car and watched. She heard a distinctive voice shouting, "Ed! Do it now!"

"RIZA!" Vulkie thought, as she recognized the voice. A few seconds later, four men and a person in a dark suit were running down the street.

"Stop, I'm a detective!" Vulkie shouted, as they were running down the street. One of them turned around and began to shoot at the car which Vulkie was hiding behind.

"Why do I keep getting into these messes, I swear... If I do this one more time, it'll probably mean the end of my career..." Vulkie thought and peeked around the side. The men were running around a corner.

When Vulkie reached the corner, she heard screeching car tires and saw a car speeding away. Vulkie shot two bullets at the car, but to no avail.

"Damn!" Vulkie thought and she walked back towards Sami's. As she entered the room, people were crying, huddling together, and comforting each other. But one view disturbed her. A man, holding a girl in her early twenties, who had died by a hit from a stray bullet. "Whoever did this, must be insane..." Vulkie thought.

Then she saw Riza standing up, getting the dust off her dress. Standing next to her was a man who looked familiar. They turned and noticed Vulkie standing there....

*******************June 1, 1925*******************

It was late in the day when Sully and I decided to call it quits and pick up the next day where we left off. So far the only thing we had was that the gem, if activated, gives anyone the power of immortality being like that of a god. While, I myself had no belief in such nonsense, and believed in only one God.

That night I went into my small one room apartment and put on a fresh pot of coffee. I knew it was going to be a long night. I had too much on my mind. How could such a small gem posses such a large power? If possible, why is it so important? Where could it be hid after it got secured? Erik Von Schmidt's wife had told us about the gem when we had questioned her about her husband's death.

She had explained to us that her husband had gone looking for it but was killed just shortly after he started. So was it possible that within just a couple days, he had gotten too close? I thought it was most certainly possible. But who could posses such a jewel, and why?

The smell of coffee filled my house and I grabbed a cup and just inhaled the steam and aroma of the hot liquid. After drinking two cups and thinking of those questions over and over, I fell asleep.

**********June 2, 1925***********

I awoke early in the morning, made a fresh pot of coffee, and was soon to work. I walked into the office about the same time Sully got there. "So where do we begin?" I asked him.

He looked at me and laughed. "Good question," he said, "I'm not even sure where to begin."

"Well..." I started, "I talked to a guy in London yesterday and he said its a powerful gem, and it makes who ever posses it, immortal like a god. The hard part is finding it, and stopping whoever has it."

"Right," Sully said. "So, Mrs. Von Schmidt has no clue where we could find it, and Erik is dead. We have no leads. What do think we should do?"

Molly knew the minute she heard the first panicked voice yell "explosion at Sami's!".
Call it gut feeling, call it merely knowing someone as well as she did, but two words popped into her head and they weren't "freak accident."
Those two words were Riza Hawkeye.

Calmly running a hand over her immaculate blonde mane down over the luxurious mink stole she had draped over her shoulders, she made a split-second decision. Whipping out a compact with the speed of a professional gunwoman, she examined her lipstick with a sharp eye and satisfied it was all to rights, snapped the silver compact closed and dropped it in her purse. With a nod to Erica Strauss, a beak-nosed old biddy proficient in jewelry appraisals and a large influence in Molly's latest business venture, she exited the modest storefront and hung a sharp left, heading up to Sami's Greek restaurant. Adjusting her silk gloves, she blithely ignored crying and screaming passerby and the frantic whir of police cars speeding passed. She had a little musical number stuck in her head, it was a concerto of some sort. Humming the first few bars serenely, she rounded the corner and surveyed the damage with a clinical interest.

"Well. I guess I haven't lost my touch after all." She said, raising long thin eyebrows and smiling pleasantly at Riza Hawkeye, who just looked mildly confused at this statement. Molly added a wink and then her eyes slid to the man standing just next to Riza and she gave a start of surprise.

"Why, Joseph Zeo! Its been a cool minute since I've seen you around." She said, leaning in to give him a friendly peck on the cheek. The perfect red imprint of her lips were left behind, and she whipped out a handkerchief to smudge it away. "And is that Vulkie? Why, this IS something of a class reunion, isn't it? Whats the story, morning glory? Crazy killers? Mobbies out for blood? Disgruntled ex-wives? Something exciting MUST have happened to bring you all out on the street together once again."
