October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

"What? What? What? Me!" Heimlich shouted.

"It's just for a little bit Heimlich." Joseph pleaded, "Let her play with Valerie and enjoy the party, but I just can't look at her anymore with Anais missing. You owe me that much." Without another word, he turned and left.

Heimlich sighed and bent down. "Well Miss Josèe Nin, do you like board games?" he asked with a smile. Josèe nodded, but looked back nervously for Joseph.

"Well have I got a surprise for you then!" Heimlich said with a wink and a smile, "Your daddy bought me a new board game called Monopoly for my birthday last year. Would you like to play with Valerie and me?"

Josèe nodded enthusiastically. "Yes please!" she said with a giggle and ran inside to find Valerie.

Heimlich sighed. "Joseph Zeo," he said, "I may have owed you one, but now you owe me one."

She sat alone, in silence, as the train rumbled its way through the night back to New York. She was lost in memories, good ones. She remembered how giddy she had been on their wedding day. The times when they had been so carefree. She smiled when she thought of how he would whisk her up in his arms and dance around the kitchen while she was trying to cook dinner. The smiles, the laughs, the excitement, and the joy stayed with her. The despair, anger, helplessness, and pain were left behind. She would never return.

New York City
Anais stepped off the train into the bustling of the crowd. She knew she should go home, but she wasn’t ready yet. ‘Josèe is safe with Joseph,’ she thought, ‘and I still have ghosts to lay to rest.’

The Mother of Innocence Cathedral
It was so quiet here, among the dead. Outside of the graveyard, the city bustled about, intent on life, ignoring the reminder of death that sat in their midst. Anais walked up and down every row of headstones, a few polished to a shine and new, but most worn and dingy. She didn’t know where her parents were buried. Lisette had just told her that he had died, but they didn’t have time to go to the graveyard before… Tears started down her cheeks once more. She had dim memories of coming here with Lisette and Papa when she was just a child, and she followed them. It took her an hour to find her family. The flowers she had bought from a peddler were starting to droop. Anais knelt, not caring if she stained her skirt with the earth. She sat in the quiet stillness and let herself relax. Hours passed without notice or care. When the sun began to dim, she stood and walked back to the Cathedral.

One foot set upon a stair. Then the other. Without planning it, Anais started up the steps to enter the church. It was empty. Her footsteps echoed as she walked quietly toward the altar. Crossing herself, she slid into the first pew and knelt. She prayed for the first time in years, thanking God that she hadn’t died, that Josèe was safe, that Joseph was safe, and that all their friends were safe. She thought about her life, about her friends, and about her daughter. And she wondered why one particular face kept popping up in her mind’s eye.

It was dark when she slipped out of the Cathedral. The street lamps were lit and the less savory of the city were out. Anais made sure her dagger was in easy reach before she started down the street into the maze of apartments and houses that she had called home for so many years. She needed to go home.

Home

It was empty. She had known it was. She owned it still. And she had let it sit empty but for her past. She stood across the street and stared for a few seconds before crossing and letting herself in.

“I’m home,” Anais called out into the silence as she had always done in years past.

She shrieked as she heard “Ana? Is that you?”

“Get out, right now. I have a dagger and I know how to use it!” she said as she slowly made her way toward the voice.

“Ana!” Joseph stepped into the sliver of light from the streetlamp outside. “Ana! Where the hell have you been?”

The dagger clattered to the floor as Anais ran to Joseph, tears streaking her face.

Joseph made his way to the couch, half-carrying Anais. “Ana, don’t cry,” he begged, “please don’t cry.”

“I can’t stop,” sobbed Anais, burying her head in Joseph’s shoulder. “Where’s Josèe?”

“She’s at Heim’s. She’s safe,” Joseph replied awkwardly, patting Anais’ back before pulling her off to give her a shake. “Where the hell were you? You just vanished! Four days!” He gave her another shake. “Do you realize how scared Josèe is? She thinks you are dead, Ana. Dead,” he repeated, giving her another gentle shake before pulling her close.

“Or how scared I was?” he then whispered.

Ana pulled away. “I had to say goodbye. How did you know I’d come here?” she asked quietly as she rubbed her cheeks dry.

“Uh,” Joseph fumbled, “I-I-we-I just did.” He cleared his throat and stood up to pace.

Anais curled up in a ball as she said, “Joseph, I’m sorry. I had to get away. I didn’t know I was going ‘till I was there. I didn’t plan on it. But that’s no excuse,” she hugged her chest and looked at Joseph with pleading eyes. “I don’t want her to see me like this.”

“Promise me you’ll never do that again!” Joseph suddenly shouted, “Sorry doesn’t cut it, Anais. You put us through hell, not knowing where you were, if you were ok, if you were even alive! We scoured the city for you.” He to

“Promise me you’ll never do that again!” Joseph suddenly shouted, “Sorry doesn’t cut it, Anais. You put us through hell, not knowing where you were, if you were ok, if you were even alive! We scoured the city for you.” He took a deep breath. “Where were you, anyways?”

“Chicago,” Anais replied.

Joseph stared at her. “Chicago?”

“Yes! Chicago.” Anais stood and walked over to Joseph, not breaking eye contact. “Joseph, I had to say goodbye. I had to let go. I had to let them all go.”

“Who? Who all go?”Joseph asked, already knowing the answer.

“I’ve been a widow for nine years, Joseph. Nine years. And I had never visited their grave. I didn’t know where it was,” Anais spoke dully, staring at the man in front of her without seeing him. “When I died, I saw them. I saw Lisette, too. Lisette was taking care of them for me. Like I’m taking care of Josèe. And I knew I had to let go. For all our sakes, I had to let go.”

Joseph ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. “I understand that, Ana. But why didn’t you bring someone with you? Someone to help? Or at least tell me what you needed to do!”

“I had someone there. I had Ralph. You remember him, right? Alfred’s younger brother.”

Joseph scowled at the memory.

“How did you know I’d come here, Joseph?” Anais asked him, before giving way to a huge yawn.

“I just did. That’s all.” He sat back down on the couch.

“Joseph?”

“What Ana?”

“Would you hold me?”

Anais’ eyes were closed, leaving her blind to the expression on Joseph’s face.

“For a little while. We have a very worried daughter to get back to, though.”

“I know,” she sighed as she drifted off.

"Pay up Uncle Heimie!" Josèe giggled as she put forth her outstretched palm, "That's $400 rent!"

Heimlich shook his head as he counted out the bills from his stack of money. Beaten by a child and he wasn't at all bothered by it. The party was in full swing. He looked around the room and saw Riza and Albert enjoying a drink together, Vulkie sampling from one of the trays of finger food, and Abby & Eric laughing about something with Marc. Even Charlie was here today. The old Heimlich would have hated people in his home, but this one didn't mind it quite as much.

"This just in," the radio crackled out, "we have received reports here in the studio that Senator Vincent Sterling of Pennsylvania has been critically injured in an automobile accident."

"Sterling!" Albert cried out, "My God! Henry, he's the one who selected me to take on the Barnes case!"

"What?" Heimlich said in surprise, "Do you think there's a connection?"

Albert shook his head. "I don't know." he replied, "I worked for him during his most recent reelection campaign, and he said I could use the press to make a run as district attorney! You don't think..."

Albert's speech was interrupted by the radio, "Ladies and gentlemen, we previously reported that Senator Vincent Sterling had been injured in an automobile accident on the way back to his home. We have an update for you. We now have the sad duty of reporting that Senator Sterling has died of his injuries at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Sterling was sixty-two years old, and leaves behind a wife and two sons. No official statement has come from Governor George Howard Earle, however according to state law, the duty of appointing a successor until an election can be held will fall to the Governor."

"I have to go." Albert announced. The room went silent as everyone turned in surprise. "My state just lost a beloved Senator, they'll need me back home. I'm sorry, we have to go."

Valerie walked to his side. "Does this mean we're leaving everyone?" she asked.

"For a little while." Albert replied, "We'll be back. I'm sure Josèe will be looking forward to seeing you again, and would like to come see Pennsylvania some time!"

Josèe looked at Albert for a brief second before bursting into tears and running up the stairs.

"What's wrong?" Albert asked.

Heimlich put his arm around him. "What's wrong is she's a little girl dealing with grown up things, and her best friend in the world is going away." He replied as he led Albert to the door, "Does this mean you've decided to keep her?"

Albert looked down ashamed. "I can't imagine what came over me." he said, "Cecilia always said I'm a father first, and everything else second. I think it's time for me to put that into practice."

Molly had drifted up behind the two to say her goodbyes, but stopped with a funny expression on her face as she heard Alberts words.

"Its not a perfect art, dear." she said quietly, then after a smile turned her eyes to Heimlich.

"Well, I'm afraid business awaits, Heim dear. Do call me next time you have an exciting turn of events won't you?" She planted a kiss on his cheek.

"Until next time." And with that, Molly turned on her heel and walked out the door without a glance back.

Marc drank the last of the scotch he had in his glass and pulled out his pocket watch. It was getting late. Tomorrow would be another day full of some sort of adventure. He said good bye to Eric, Abby, Vulkie, and Charlie. He turned and walked toward Albert and Heimlich.

"Heimlich, my old friend. I think I should get going. It's getting late." Marc said. "Albert," Marc said turning toward him, "it's been a pleasure to meet you." He extended his arm and the two men shook hands.

"Heim, if you ever need me, you know how to reach me." Marc said. without another word, Marc walked through the door and into the night.
