Heimlich VonVictor

October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

Molly was the first to move. She stood in a smooth motion and inclined her head at Heimlich, then turned to Marc.

"If you don't mind, we'll be taking my car. I've seen how you drive." she said, albeit fondly. She had deliberately chosen Marc. He was a good friend of hers, and she worked well with him. Plus, she preferred having a fighter such as he at her back if things ever went south.

She nodded at the room and then glided out, moving around where she parked her car and getting into the drivers seat.

"Let's go investigate a crime scene, shall we?"

"You two should have no problem accessing all premises within the museum." Joseph replied as he moved towards the phone. "I shall make a call to the morgue as well to let them know we're coming. If Kincaid's death is somehow related to the thief operation, I am sure I can convince my superior to let us look into it."

Zeo noticed Anais was quickly giving the two girls instructions as to how to behave at Mrs. Kobetz' Russian neighborhood. Anais seemed so natural and wise with the kids. He was absolutely relieved to have Anais as the long term guardian for his girl, and was feeling a bit light headed to know he will be spending some alone time with Anais with the upcoming investigations... um, alone with Heimlich and Anais, that is....

"Hello? Hello!!? I said, this is the New York Museum... may I help you sir?" The woman over the phone repeated.

"Um, yes, I'm here, my apologies. This is agent Joseph Zeo from the Federal Business of Investigation, regarding the recent robbery and murder. Private investigators Miss Molly Maltese and Mr. Marc Lacrimosa are heading your way, please allow them full access to your venue for the investigation... Yes... Yes, I shall talk to Captain William Steele about this. That should not be of problem..."

As Zeo continued his conversation on the phone, he could not help but stole another glance at Anais, who was now hugging Josee goodbye. Unconsciously, the corner of his mouth turned upward into a grin.

"Losing my dearest friend,again..." Vulkie thought, after the meeting. Charlie was driving towards City Hall.

""No!" Vulkie screamed, "Heimlich! You can't be serious! Not Eric! No! You can't give him back to them! They nearly killed him last time Heimlich!"

The words rang in her head, but Heimlich made it clear with the comment : "If anyone doesn't agree with my methods, there's the door!"

Vulkie seriously thought for a moment of leaving, but decided that she had to sacrifice Eric, to make the truth come true and out in the open.

But she had already lost him two times...

First moment : Breaking up. Second moment : Eric being kidnapped.

"Third's time must be right..." Vulkie murmered. "Did you say anything?" Charlie asked.

"No Charlie. I was thinking of something... You go ahead and drive... I need to get my mind a bit clear..." Vulkie said, sinking in her thoughts again.

Leonard... Vinnie... Vulkie thought of the persons dear to her that she had lost over the time. Her brother Leonard, died in a furious war between her and friends against the DAB. Her cousin Vinnie, died during the Reign of Al Capone....

"I'm not losing you too Eric... I've had to sacrifice much, but they won't take you from me..." Vulkie murmered and again, Charlie asked : "Something wrong?"

"I SAID NO DAMN IT!!!!" Vulkie shouted and Charlie shook a bit of Vulkie's outburst.

"Geez, you don't have to be that frustrated..." Charlie said and he concentrated again on the road.

"Sorry Charlie... It's been a tough week..." Vulkie murmered and Charlie nodded. Charlie understood how Vulkie felt.

"Vulkie... tell me.... Do you still have certain... "feelings"... for this Marvington fella?" Charlie asked Vulkie, as he stopped for a traffic light and looked at her.

Vulkie looked out of the window and a tear dropped from her cheek, as she said : "Yes Charlie. I still have feelings for him. He was to become the man of my dreams, my knight on the white horse...'" (cont)

"Eric even bought me an engagement ring. He wanted to marry me. He really wanted to. Only, I kept calling Ace's name. He got frustrated. I hit him, he hit me. He told me he had another girlfriend. It was like a mirror was struck with a brick, bursting into ten thousand pieces. He got his clothes, he left... We never spoke again... For nearly three months it has been now Charlie.... And I still love that damn man!" Vulkie explained and said.

The traffic light turned green. Charlie immediately drove forward. "Vulkie, you'll have to let go. There are more men around you. You know that, I know that. Maybe you and I should go out, for some manhunting and womanhunting. We're both out of a relation at the moment..." Charlie said and grinned.

Vulkie blushed. "Yeah, that would be fun" Vulkie replied and smiled, out of the window.

Before the two of them went to City Hall, Vulkie went by the tailor's place and the barber. Octavia was a good friend of hers. Vulkie got some new clothes.

"Hiya Octavia. I want a "blonde" coupe please..." Vulkie said, as she entered the barber shop. "Sure, I'll put it on your "tab" " Octavia replied and gave a smile.

***20 minutes later***

Vulkie stepped out of the barber shop, with blonde hair. "You look lovely.." Charlie said and Vulkie blushed.

"It's time to pay City Hall a visit now..." Vulkie said and Charlie drove off to City Hall.

"Here we are.." Charlie said, 10 minutes later. Vulkie immediately got a flashback from what happened the previous day. The dead body dropped before Hollis, Vulkie shouting to Hollis, the chase...

"Something wrong?' Charlie said, noticing Vulkie's distressed look.

"Nah... Let's go in..." Vulkie said and the both detectives got out of the car, making their way into City Hall...

"Okay, Marc." Molly began as she pulled up in front of the museum. "You check around where the Eye of God statue was. I'll check out where they found Kincaid's body, and we'll meet in the middle once we're through."

They were waved through a heavy throng of press members and policemen, but surprisingly the museum was silent. Molly peeled off for the Egyptian exhibit, and saw the crime scene tape around the sarcophagus. Looking at a photo left on the table for reference, she noted the appropriate evidence concerning Kincaid (hair color, shoe size) before advancing on the display. There was almost no blood; evidence he had been killed elsewhere. She looked around. The killer would not have been able to drag a burly man like Kincaid that far and then be able to hoist him into a sarcophagus and close the heavy lid, so he was probably killed nearby.

First she looked in the sarcophagus, noting strands of hair in the bottom that definitely belonged to the victim. However, there was one piece of hair that rested presumably just under where the lid had been. She quickly put it in a baggie and stuck it in her pocket. Either it belonged to a killer, or an innocent coroner.

Next to she went to her knees, examining the floor. There! She saw scuff marks that could only be from the heels of Kincaid's shoes if he was dragged. No footprints though. She followed the scuff marks, crawling slowly and pausing to make a note on her notepad about the scuff marks, presumably coming from the Chinese room. She also scrawled her theory on the killer dragging Kincaid. She moved through the doorway into the Chinese display room.

Immediately she spotted it; a dried trickle of blood down the side of an enormous vase. She peeked inside but it was clean safe for a pinkish tint. Undoubtedly when Kincaid was killed, he was placed on top of this and drained before his body was hidden in the vain hopes that he wouldn't be found...until the killer could make a clean getaway.

"But they found the body way before schedule." she mused, and then she heard it.

The faint squeaking of shoes moving across the floor.

"Marc?" she called apprehensively, and the noises stopped. Leaving her notepad where she was crouching, she straightened up and looked around the corner--

and was hit squarely in the temple with a golden statue.

She sank bonelessly to the floor, unconscious.

***

Minutes, or hours later, she awoke with a pounding headache in the dark. She reached out a hand and encountered resistance, and then became aware that she was curled up in a fetal position in some sort of box.

"Marc!" she called, but her muffled voice only reverberated back at her and she decided that she ought to save her voice, as the air would get very thin, very soon.

She reached out again and assessed that the box was made out of some sort of cold, sharp stone.

Jade. The giant jade box next to the terra cotta horses. It had been a gift to some emperor or another, she had read.

Well, at least I'll die in style. She thought, her mental voice just as acerbic as her spoken voice. Legs cramping, she waited.

For death or discovery, whichever came first.

Molly went to the right and Marc to the left after they entered the museum. As Molly began doing her investigation of where the body was found, Marc took the room where the Eye Of God once was displayed.

Infront of Marc stood the platform in which the precious jewel was displayed. It once was held in a glass case. The case was shattered in to millions of tiny pieces. But somthing caught his eye. He knelt down and picked up a tiny piece of thread. It was large enough to know that it came from a trench coat. As to what kind? Only a tailor could tell.

Marc heard a door squeak behind him and he jumped, drawing his pistold. His eyes jerked around the room. "Probably nothing," Marc said to himself and he continued his investigation. He noticed a tiny drop of blood on the ground. The criminal must have busted the case with his bare hands, splitting his hand open.

Marc put the thread in a small baggie and put the bag in his pocket. Marc heard another noise. Not any type of noise. It was a muffled scream.

"Molly?" Marc called out. He heard it again.

"Molly!" Marc yelled. There was no response. Marc swore out loud as he ran into the Egyptian room. He drew his pistol as he entered the room. But something wasn't right. It was quiet. Too quiet. "Molly? Are you in here?" Marc called. He heard movement behind him. Marc turned.

There was a sarcophagus in the room. "That must be the one Kincaid was found in," Marc thought. Across from the large casket was another. Laying down. It was chained shut. That's odd, Marc thought to himself. He pulled out his pistol and made sure that no one was in the room. Someone was here. He heard movement coming from in side the casket.

Marc shot the lock, breaking it. He pulled open the lid. Inside was Molly Maltese. The look on her face was one that Marc had never seen before; fright.

"My god, Molly! Are you okay?" Marc said as he helped her out.

((Little casket= big Jade Box in the Chinese room, not the Egyptian. ;) ))

Marc grabbed her hands and hoisted her out of the giant box, but she fell awkwardly to her knees once she was set on her feet.

"Sorry, I think my legs are asleep." she breathed, planting her hands on the floor and taking a deep breath. She desperately needed to pull herself together; she was shaking like a leaf and worse; afraid she might cry.

"The statue." she said suddenly. "I saw it. Go back into the Egyptian room and look for a gold statue about this big."

She gestured with her hands. "Bring it to me if you find it."

With Marc dispatched, she slowly rose, staggering a bit as she found her footing and went back to where she had been when she was struck.

"My notepad is gone." she noticed, frowning. She had recorded the evidence she had found in the sarcophagus; gently she felt in her coat pocket for the baggie with the hair and found that it was gone.

She pursed her lips and hoped that Marc could find the statue. Perhaps her assailant had left some more evidence on it.

Dizzy from the blow to her head, she sat down again and leaned against the huge box, sighing a little.

Some days she just wasn't paid enough for her job.

In due time, Marc returned to find Molly quite composed, or so it seemed. He had not been able to locate the statue.

"A shame.' she said in clipped tones as she rose. "Well, let us return to the others and report our findings."

As they moved outside, she looked at her car and paused in thought. "Marc, I rather think I'll let you drive. I don't quite feel up to it."

Marc climbed in behind the wheel and she took the passenger seat, staring out the window with a brooding expression. When they reached Heim's house, she gestured for him to go inside.

"Would you go in and report what you've found? I'm just going to tidy up in here." she said, scraping some papers together from where they had slid out of the folders on the floorboards.

When he had gone she gave a deep sigh and pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes, not able to quell the shaking that punctuated every movement. It was hard to process that she had just faced an awful death, one that seemed worse than all the dangers she had been in before.

What if no one had found her?

Banishing this thought she climbed out of the vehicle and made her way inside, hearing Marc speaking in the front room. Rather than go in just yet she instead ghosted down the hall to the bathroom, where she proceeded to freshen up her make-up; she really did look quite the fright.

***City Hall***

Vulkie and Charlie made their way into City Hall. Charlie was pretty good at influencing the guard at the front door, so Vulkie could slip past him and Charlie a few seconds later.

"I've told him that we're here to see the Mayor... I hope he believes and bites it. We've got at least 5 minutes to find anything out..." Charlie said and Vulkie and Charlie walked around in City Hall

City Hall was famous for all the paintings of the mayors. As Vulkie gazed at a picture from 1897, Charlie walked towards a bust that had Mayor Hollis's face on it.

"So this is the slimeball?" Charlie said and looked closely. "That's him alright.." Vulkie said, with a flashback from the "dropping" in her mind.

Vulkie and Charlie made their way to the Mayor's office. Charlie "bribed" the guards to take a cup of coffee and they went off. Vulkie first looked through the keyhole and then placed her ear against the door.

".... a body was dropped in front of me, two days ago! This isn't going as planned Davis! I expect you to get rid of those pesky detectives, they're on our tail and close to the "Eye of God". I expect YOU to protect it, with your life. Or the consequences will be a dearly cost..." Mayor Hollis said.

"Sounds like he's threatening someone, a certain Davis..." Vulkie said and they walked away. Five minutes later, the doors were opened and "Davis" walked out.

Vulkie "accidently" bumped into him, with a cup of coffee. The coffee went all over Davis's shirt.

"MY SHIRT!" Davis shouted and Vulkie apologized. "I'm sorry sir... It's just that I'm here to see the mayor... He makes me a bit nervous..." Vulkie said, with an innocent look. Davis sighed and nodded. "He makes me nervous too. Anyway, the name's Davis. Joe Davis. And you are...?" Davis asked.

Vulkie immediately responded with : "Nouson. Victoria Nouson"

"Well Miss Nouson, you owe me a few dollars... for the shirt. Or if you can think of anything else...." Davis said, with a smile...
