October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

~October 29~

Anais and Josèe were at the hotel at eight o'clock on the dot to pick up Valerie. Albert watched with wonder as Valerie actually smiled at Josèe and said hello to Anais.

"Where are we going today, Mummy?" Josèe asked Anais.

"Today? Today we are seeing some friends! First we have to go home, ok, girls?" Anais said with a smile.

When they got to the apartment Anais was renting, Anais sent the girls to play in Josèe's room as she made some calls.

"Heimlich? It's Anais. The meeting is today? At your house?" Anais inquired.

"Yes, it is, Anais. You are coming?" Heim responded, sounding a bit distracted.

"As long as it is ok to bring Josèe and Valerie with."

There was a pause on the other end o the line. "Of course it is. Does Albert know?"

"No, should I have cleared it with him? You are her uncle after all," Anais said, a bit confused.

"Her uncle, yes, her uncle. Bye Anias, see you later with the girls," the line was abruptly dead.

"That was odd," Anais said to herself as she stared at the phone. Then she called the girls and buttoned up the coats.

They stood waiting for a bus, the three of them plus a Russian looking man, all bundled up. When the bus arrived, they all clammored on.

Eight stops later, Anais climbed off the bus, Valerie's hand in one of her hands, and Josèe's in the other. The Russian man climbed off, too.

Josèe pulled at Anais' hand, "Mummy! Did you see that the man who was waiting at the stop with us got off, too? And he is walking the way we are walking!" she whispered urgently.

"Yes, I did, sweetie, hold onto my hands tight, girls. And if I tell you to run, RUN! Do you understand, girls?" Anais whispered to the pair. Both nodded with wide eyes.

Just then, a man called out, "Anais Nin? Ms. Nin? Is that you?"

Anais turned around to see a man with slightly wild hair running toward them with an earnest expression on his face.

"Girls? Uncle Heimie's house is second house from the end of the block. Run!" Anais whispered to a clearly frightened Josèe and Valerie.

They ran.

"Who are you two? And how do you know my name?" Anais demanded as the man with wild hair exclaimed to the Russian looking man, "Sergei! Glad to see I'm not the only late one!"

"Ms. Nin, it is a pleasure to meet you face to face!" the man called Sergei said.

Anais spared a quick glance behind her to see the girls ringing the doorbell of Heimlich's house.

Anais drew out her gun from her purse.

"Tell me who the heck you are and what you want with me," Anais said in a low voice, bristling like a scared cat.

"Why, I'm Charlie Cain! And this is Sergei Kobetz! Frieds of Vulkie, Joseph, and Heimlich! They talk about you often enough," the man with the wild hair replied.

"Why should I believe you?" Anais asked, raising her gun to point at the men.

Molly heard the doorbell ring and rose, nodding to Heim who was about to speak to signify that she would answer it. She went into the other room and opened the door, only to find two very panicked looking children who looked at her wide-eyed and then raced past her into the house.

"What on earth?" Molly asked herself, poking her head out the door to find an interesting scene on the sidewalk. She put her hand on her hip and cocked her head.

"Charlie, what on earth are you doing?" she asked mildly, apparently not bothered that a very shaken looking woman was pointing a gun at him.

Marc opened his mouth. Just before he could say something, the door bell rang.

"What on earth?" Molly said quietly as she got up to answer the door. A moment later, he heard her say "Charlie, what on earth are you doing?"

Marc got up and fast walked to the door where he found someone holding a gun. It was a woman. She looked scared and was holding a gun at none other than Charlie Cain.

"Woah, hey there, miss, I'm going to have to ask you to drop the gun. That's a detective you're holding a gun at." Marc said the woman.

She lowered her gun and turned to face him. When Marc saw her face, every ounce of breath he had in him left his body.

It Anais Nin!

"Anais?!" Marc said aloud.

"Wait, you know her?" Molly asked curiously.

"Yeah...I met her, Joseph, Heimlich and Vulkie in Bombay, India about two years ago. I helped them solve a case. After the case, she disappeared. I haven't heard from her since...well, not until now..." Marc said.

Heimlich stared at the people in his sitting room and wondered if he was making a mistake pulling them all into this. After last time, he swore he would never ask for help again, not after what happened to Richard.

He cleared his throat and began, "As many of you know, I along with several of you, were contacted by Graham Barnes with regard to the burglary committed at the local museum."

"And we all told him to shove it!" Joseph interjected.

"Yes," Heimlich replied, "but in this instance it appears Barnes was framed. Don't get me wrong, he is the slimiest piece of garbage on the force, and I would like nothing more than to see him spend the rest of his life in jail, but I don't want it to be for something he didn't do."

The detectives looked around the room and nodded in agreement. Anais, noticing that the conversation was turning a bit more serious, leaned down and whispered something to Josèe, who promptly grabbed Valerie by the wrist, and dragged her into the next room.

"Now we have seven detectives: myself, Charlie, Joseph, Anais, Sergei, Marc, and Molly. In addition we have Miss... I'm sorry I didn't catch your name." Heimlich said indicating Serena.

"Well," she began, "I have a confession. Serena Edwards is not my name, but an alias that I used to talk to Mr. Marvington and drug him."

Every eye in the room dated to her. Molly and Charlie both had their hands on their weapons. "Explain yourself," Marc demanded, "or I swear it will be the last thing you ever don't do."

"My name is Abigail Stone." she said firmly, "I am a professor of archaeology at the University of Oxford. My father has cancer, and The Eye of God is rumored to be able to heal him. I managed to get wind of a plot by The Order of Socrates to steal the eye, and managed to get into it. They promised me use of the eye once we had it, but they double-crossed me." She sat down with a look on absolute horror on her face, "Nobody was supposed to get killed."she said.

"I was just supposed to seduce the guard and steal his keys and then seduce your friend and drug him. I don't know what they wanted with him, but they didn't get it." she finished.

Heimlich stared at her, so her name was Abigail. Good. The last thing he needed was another Serena to lie to him. A plan began to form in his head.

"We have three objectives at this time," he said, "first is to search the crime scene, second is to examine the body of John Kincaid, and third is to infiltrate the Order of Socrates and find out what they wanted. There are seven of us, although I suppose since Anais has the kids..."

"Oh no!" Anais interrupted him, "You're not making me sit this one out Heimlich VonVictor! I'm in this like everyone else."

"My wife could watch them." Sergei offered, "She is very good with children and is very safe because she is surrounded in neighborhood by Russian mob."

The group had a good laugh. As odd as it was, the order wouldn't dare to go after the Russian mob. Perhaps the Russian district was the safest place for them.

"Right then," Heimlich said, holding up a handful of sticks, "we draw lots for assignments and partners. Does anyone have issue with that?" If anyone did, they didn't say anything, and a minute later, the dye was cast.

"Vulkie and Charlie will investigate the order. Sergei will join them after bringing the children to his apartment. You'll be helping Abigail get back in with the order." he declared.

"How will we do that?" Abigail asked, "They know I ran. They won't trust me!"

"Because you're going to give them the one thing they want most." Heimlich said coldly.

A silence hung over the room for a split second before Heimlich's words sunk in. "No!" Vulkie screamed, "Heimlich! You can't be serious! Not Eric! No! You can't give him back to them! They nearly killed him last time Heimlich!"

"He'll be cooperative this time," Heimlich said, "Abigail will convince them that he's sympathetic to their cause. If anyone doesn't agree with my methods, there's the door!" The detectives sat in silence. Clearly they had their reservations, but what other choice did they have? They had to attack head on.

"Molly and Marc," he said, "You're going to examine the crime scene. Look for any evidence that someone else was at the museum. Check both the murder scene and the robbery scene."

Marc flashed a smile at Molly who turned away, pretending she hadn't deliberately grabbed the stick that she saw matched Marc's when Heimlich's fingers were spaced just wide enough to make out the color.

"Joseph, Anais, and myself will go the morgue and attempt to get access to Mr. Kincaid's body. Between Joseph and myself, we should have enough influence to get in. Incidentally Joseph, could you place a call to someone in your division and ask them to allow Marc and Molly into the museum? I think a call from the FBI is all that this local PD needs in order to light the fires of hospitality for the private investigators." He finished.

For a time, no one moved, no one spoke, and no one dared to make an attempt to leave. It would seem the detectives were being held by the collective gravity of the great task they had taken upon themselves.

Molly was the first to move. She stood in a smooth motion and inclined her head at Heimlich, then turned to Marc.

"If you don't mind, we'll be taking my car. I've seen how you drive." she said, albeit fondly. She had deliberately chosen Marc. He was a good friend of hers, and she worked well with him. Plus, she preferred having a fighter such as he at her back if things ever went south.

She nodded at the room and then glided out, moving around where she parked her car and getting into the drivers seat.

"Let's go investigate a crime scene, shall we?"
