October 24, 1938- Heimlich VonVIctor felt a chill run down his spine. Autumn always had that effect on him. He looked up at the multitude of colors adorning the trees and placed his hands in his coat pockets. The pungent aroma in the air told him that, somewhere, leaves were being burnt. He took a deep breath and looked down, to the place he had visited as many times as he could in the past two years. The cold hard stone hadn’t changed a bit, and never would. It would always be a testament to the man resting under it.

RICHARD CAMBRIDGE
FEBRUARY 10, 1892-
JUNE 15, 1936
“Justice for all. Above all else.”

He took a deep sigh. He never left anything behind, nor did he suspect that Richard would want anything left for him. He leaned down and placed his hand on the stone, “I’m doing alright Richard. Eric and I started up another agency. We’re doing it right this time, and Sergei is getting better at English every day. He’s even solving cases now; you wouldn’t believe how well he’s doing.”

“Excuse me, detective VonVictor?” a voice called behind him

Heim whirled around to find himself face to face with a young uniformed officer, “What do you want?” he demanded, “Can’t you see I’m in a cemetery?”

“Yes sir,” he responded, “and I’m terribly sorry to disturb you, but I’ve been asked to fetch you right away, it’s a matter of life and death!”

Heimlich let out a sigh, and leaned down to touch the stone again, “It never ends Richard, it never ends. I have to go now, but I’ll be back real soon.”

Heimlich didn’t even turn around. “Who is going to believe you Barnes? You’ve been a corrupt piece of garbage from the day you put that badge on. Plead guilty and save us all the misery.” With that, Heimlich turned and walked out, the cell door slamming shut behind him.

Officer Marsh looked in at him, “Now what? Got any other detective friends?”

Barnes thought for a minute, “Try Joseph Zeo,” he replied, “see if he’ll talk some sense into VonVictor. If not, I’ve got a few more we can try.”

Two long years passed by since that awful thing happened to Vulkie. Two very long years. Vulkie still gets chills from that story.

To put it in a small story, she managed to save President Roosevelt, risking her life and those of many NY-ers... She had to do it. Because of one man,the brother of Sergei Kobetz, who threatened to kill Roosevelt and make a diplomatic eruption between the US and Russia : Leon Kobetz...

Leon Kobetz was eventually trialed and was hung up the day after the trial ended. That's the last we would see from that Russian b*stard.

Everything went well for Vulkie after that. She had a nice boyfriend,Eric Marvington and everything seemed fine for her...

Until that fatal day, when Eric met that other woman. He decided that our time was over, that we had build up a beautiful relationship, but we needed to "move" other ways. Vulkie only nodded while Eric explained why he had to leave her... He loved that other woman better... But that wasn't the main excuse... This happened three months before the 24th of October...

As you may all know,Vulkie is being haunted by the death of her old lover Ace Masters... She never got over it... And she also has visions of him.. (See Josèe for reference!).

The newspaper she read, held an article about the crooked Captain Barnes. Seems he "stole" a gem, called "The Eye of God". Vulkie knew Barnes would fall for such a thing,he was crooked anyway...

"RIIING" the phone went. Vulkie was lost in her thoughts about the Frame-Up case,as she heard the phone ringing again.

"Coming" Vulkie murmered and she picked the phone up. "Private Investigator Vulkie, how can I help you?" she asked and waited for a reply.

"Vulkie? It's me,Graham.." the other voice said and Vulkie made a "disgusting" look. "Barnes,I'm not talking to you anymore,you... you thief!" she replied and almost hung up.

"Don't hang up!" Barnes yelled. "You're my only help... Joseph and Heim won't talk to me.." Barnes said and Vulkie laughed...

"No sh*t Sherlock" Vulkie replied. "It's obvious why they don't want to "help" you. You've caused a great lot of trouble to us 2 years ago and we still haven't forgotten it.." Vulkie added.

"Please... Just try to talk to Heimlich... He's.... He's my only help for now... He... He won't help me... PLEASE. I BEG OF YOU!" Barnes shouted and Vulkie sighed. "I'll see what I can do Barnes. But no promises are made now! If Heim refuses,I can't help it..." Vulkie said.

"Agreed" Barnes said and he hung up. Vulkie also hung up the phone. "What have I gotten myself into this time..." Vulkie murmered and she held her hands before her face, before phoning Heimlich,to meet her at Sami's.

***Sami's restaurant***

"Hiya Heim! Long time no see..." Vulkie said and she faked a little smile.

"It has been some time, hasn't it?" Heim said. "So,what you wanted to talk about?" Heimlich said and he ordered some food for us and drinks.

"It's about Barnes. He phoned me and..." Vulkie began, but Heimlich held up his hand and with his other hand,he rubbed his eyes.

"I know it... He's trying to get me "defend" him in court... But I've refused.. I won't do it!" Heimlich said and slammed his fist on the table.

"Oi,watch my table!" Maria said and Heimlich apologized. "But why Heim? Why don't you want to do it? I mean,he's crooked after all,but I've never seen you "infuriated" by such a thing,," Vulkie asked.

"So,how's everything between you and Eric?" Heimlich asked, trying to change the subject.

"Oh,very clever Heim. To change the subject. Very subtile..." Vulkie replied and tears began to flow from her face. "You bloody well know it's been three months since Eric and I broke up! How could you Heim, how could you begin about this! It was the most wonderful thing that happened in my life and he abandoned me for this... Well... Oh,never mind!" Vulkie said and she began to rub her eyes and placed some new mascara on and made her face pretty.

"Sorry" Heimlich said....

"Heim,I don't care if you want to help Barnes or not,but why are you not willing to help?" Vulkie asked.

"It's... It's a small matter..." Heimlich said and he began to tremble.

"What's wrong then?" Vulkie asked.

"The prosecutor that is going to be in the trial,is from Philadelphia..." Heimlich began. "Now I know, that hasn't to do anything with this whole story. But when Barnes told me his name,I immediately refused..." Heimlich added.

"What's his name then?" Vulkie asked. "Please Heim, otherwise,I'll go to Barnes and find it myself out!" Vulkie threatened.

"His... His name is... His name is Albert... Albert Von... Albert VonVictor, Vulkie! It's my son!" Heimlich said and tears began to flow.

"You... You've got to be kidding, right? It's not sure yet... You may share the same name, but he may be from another VonVictor family?" Vulkie said, trying to comfort Heimlich at the same time.

"I've dug up some information about him. Seems he was born at the time that I had that relationship with that woman,I've told you about..." Heimlich said (see Josèe for reference!). "Everything just adds up... the date of birth,my relationship with that woman... I really believe he's my son... But I can't... I can't believe it... It's just so... impossible... Last thing I heard he was in Germany..." Heimlich said.

"Heim... if he really is your son,he has the right to know who you are and he's also been his whole life without knowing who his father is.." Vulkie said.

"I've got to go..." Heimlich said and he scurried towards the door, looking behind him... But Vulkie didn't look back... She was again lost in thoughts...

Another dreamless night.
Dreamless because Zeo wasn't able to sleep again.
No, he was not having trouble sleeping.

The warehouse the team was staking out seemed lifeless from the outside. The chill was frosting the car window but they did not dare to wipe it clean. Someone might be watching them. "Right!" Zeo thought. He had great doubts about the intelligence the bureau had been receiving. "Those scumbags had been trading relics and stolen paintings for years. My source tells me that this place must be their headquarter!" Hoover insisted.

Headquarter my arse! Zeo thought. The divide between the director of the Bureau and himself had been widening like melting iceberg, ever since he joined two years ago. He knew one day there's be an avalanche. For the moment, however, Zeo continued to take sh*t orders from John Edgar Hoover, simply because Hoover did in fact led the Bureau to many successful arrests in the past two years.

Zeo rubbed his palms together. He dearly needed a cigarette, but they weren't allowed that either. Perhaps that'd be the last straw to make Zeo quit FBI. He rekoned that he could return to NYPD. Just earlier today, while he was cat napping in his office between the stake outs, Barnes called, from a jail, of all places! The fat looser mentioned that he needed help, that he was framed. Groggy with sleep, Zeo hung up on the man before he finished speaking. Thinking back, Zeo regretted that he didn't make some nasty remarks. With people like Barnes gone, perhaps the police department wasn't such a bad option.*

(*Note to new readers: Barnes and Zeo both worked in the homicide division in NYPD. Zeo suffered a lot under the man, and upon the bureau's offer, decided to leave the department because of people like Barnes)

Zeo looked to the horizon and saw the colour of fish belly appearing from the darkness. Dawn should be upon them soon. This would deem to be another fruitless night. Zeo knew it would take another week or two before Hoover would admit defeat, to order a raid into the warehouse, only to find it empty. Zeo could feel his triumphant smile already.

Until then, Zeo knew he's looking into another dozens of dreamless nights, staring into an empty warehouse, not allowed to sleep or contact his friends, because some bozo believe this to be some kind of criminal shrine. He really needed a cigarette.

Heimlich walked briskly down the street, he couldn't let Vulkie catch up with him. He couldn't let her know that he'd just told the fib of a lifetime. Of course it was a lie! She would figure it out eventually, Albert was far too old to be his son, and even so, the last he had mentioned Henry, he made it very clear that he had searched for him for years.

He reached into his coat pocket and produced his flask. He had been good, only a social drinker, but this was different. He unscrewed the top and began to chug the contents. He felt his throat burn as his body warmed and his mind began to dull.

No Vulkie was smarter than that. It wouldn't take her long to put two and two together and it was best he be long gone by that point. Then a thought entered his mind, "What if Barnes really was innocent?" It certainly would be ironic for that slimy pig, who had escaped punishment so many times for legitimate wrongdoing, would be going down for something he had no hand in. He couldn't think like that. He wouldn't. He couldn't get involved, he decided.

Heimlich looked around him and realized he was standing in his apartment. He had walked all the way home and not realized it. He shook the flask in his hand, empty. He staggered over to the large armchair and collapsed. The room began to spin. He reached over and pulled a blanket towards him. The room felt cold. As he spread the blanket over himself his only thought was to rest his eyes for a few seconds until things were back to normal.

The next thing he knew, he was awakened several hours later by the sound of his telephone ringing.

"Albert VonVictor... Hmm,I'll try to find something out. This doesn't add up..." Vulkie murmered and she went to the "Hall of Records",to find out some more about Albert VonVictor.

"I'm here on behalf of Mr. Heimlich VonVictor" Vulkie said and the guard grunted. "Get in and leave within 5 minutes..." the guard said. Vulkie nodded and went in,right towards the section T-V.

"VonVictor..." Vulkie murmered and she got a lot of information about Heimlich.

But there was still one article left... A birth certificate...

"Albert VonVictor ,born... date.... place.... Parents..." Vulkie murmered. She also found the birth certificate from Heimlich.

"Heimlich VonVictor... Born... Date... Place... Parents..." Vulkie murmered and there she saw it...

"Heim,you... You..." Vulkie murmered,as the guard knocked on the door and came in.

"Oi,it's time. Leave!" the guard said and Vulkie did so.

"We need to have a talk you and me Heim!" Vulkie thought and she left for her apartment. "It's getting too late to phone him,I'll wait until I meet Heim again. Phoning him isn't a good idea..." Vulkie thought and she entered her apartment 10 minutes later.

"I could really use some sleep..." Vulkie said and she "snoozed" off, only to be woken up by a terrible nightmare...

"Sergei..." someone yelled. "I don't want to kill Richard Cambridge. Don't let me do this Leon..." Sergei said. A gunshot. Richard dropping down. Leon making sure he was "sleeping with the fishes..."

That's the nightmare, that made Vulkie wake up so early, that the sun hadn't risen yet... The murder of Richard Cambridge still haunted her thoughts...

***The next day,25th of October***

It was Vulkie's birthday. She was 39,still looking like she was at her mid 20's. Vulkie went through a lot,she knew that.. But if there's one important thing for a woman,it's her appearance.

She had already sent invites towards her fellow detective friends a few days before the 25th and she was getting a bit nervous.

"No need to panic. Just some drinks... It's gonna be alright..." Vulkie murmered and the doorbell rang. As Vulkie opened the door, she saw who was standing in the dooropening.

"Sergei! How nice of you to come!" Vulkie said and smiled. "It's ghood to meet ghou again Vulkie. It's been long time since we saw eachother..." Sergei said. "Do come in" Vulkie said and she led him towards the living room.

"Have some wine Sergei,or do you prefer Vodka?" Vulkie asked and Sergei asked for some Vodka. Just as Vulkie handed Sergei the Vodka, the doorbell rang. "I'll get it!" she yelled and rushed to the door.

As she opened the door, there stood Heimlich,in his best "smoking" suit. "Heimlich,hi.. Glad you could make it.." Vulkie said and she faked a smile. "You know huh?" Heimlich said and she nodded. "Not now Heim. We have some guests here!" Vulkie said and she led Heim towards the living room.

"Sergei, haven't seen you in a while" Heimlich said,as Sergei looked up. "VonVictor!" Sergei yelled and he immediately "jumped" up and grabbed Heim tightly between his arms, hugging him.

"Easy Sergei..." Heim said and he seated himself. Vulkie brought Heimlich a glass of wine...

Just then, the doorbell again rang. "Coming!" Vulkie yelled,as she scurried to the door. As she opened the door, she saw some long no time see-friends...

"Vulkie!" Charlie yelled and he kissed her on her cheeks. Vulkie blushed. "Hiya Charlie, glad you could make it. Come in..." she said. Behind Charlie stood a lady, who didn't like Vulkie as much as she did in the beginning, but they would be rivals forever. Vulkie just knew that. "Molly, welcome!" Vulkie said and Molly shook her hand. "Good to see you. It's been a while..." Molly replied and Vulkie nodded.

And finally, behind Molly, stood Marc Lacrimosa. The one detective which who she shared some real intense experiences the past few years, just like she did with Joseph Zeo and Heimlich VonVictor. But the intense moments with Marc were more recent...

"Marc, come in!" Vulkie yelled and Marc handed a bottle of bourbon to Vulkie. "You're favorite..." Marc said and he came in,placing his hat on the hatstand.

"Well everyone, glad you could make it. As you may know,I'm becoming 39 this year... It's been some special years that I didn't celebrate my birthday, but for this time,I'll celebrate it with you..." Vulkie said and everyone raised their glass and chanted 'To the next 39 years!".

"Aren't we missing someone?" Heimlich said and Vulkie wondered. "Well, haven't heard from JZ in a while. He's tied up at the moment, with stuff. Last thing I heard,he was on a case... And Anais..." Vulkie said, but Heimlich interrupted.

"People, enjoy yourself. I need to speak with Vulkie in the kitchen for a few minutes." Heimlich said and so,Vulkie and Heimlich left for the kitchen...
