It was the curtain call and Clift Garrett had to put on a smile.

It was not genuine…

It was not even convincing...

It was rather a smile of disbelief…

Vulkie knew she could watch the rest of the rehearsals and so she did. After the rehearsals were done,it was already 4 pm and Vulkie rushed towards Clift, asking if he would drop by at her apartment for dinner.

And so,the two of them left for Vulkie's apartment. Vulkie made a special dinner for Clift. Some nice veal steaks, with a red wine sauce and a nice red vino (wine) from 1907.

"To the acting and detective organisations" Vulkie exclaimed, while she held her glass of wine up. Clift nodded and took a small sip of the wine.

"So,who was that woman who we "met" today?" Vulkie asked.

Clift immediately turned red. This wasn't what he expected. He wanted to have an exciting, nice evening with Vulkie.

"Ehmmm..... She's one of my ex-wifes...." Clift said.

"Ex wife?" Vulkie said bluntly, with a frowning eyebrow.

"Yes... As I already told you,I once had a family. 2 lovely children and a wife. That's her... Makensie Brewer.... I wish that my boy could stay with his sister, but she won't allow it..." Clift said, breaking up in tears...

"Clift.... I'm.... I'm sorry..." Vulkie said and she began to "cheer" Cliff up.

So,the evening went by and it was already midnight, when Clift stood at the door.

"Thanks for the lovely evening" Clift said. Clift turned around,to leave, but changed his mind and kissed Vulkie full on the mouth.

It was beautiful. Vulkie took Clift back in her apartment and they stayed "busy" for the whole evening, waking up the next day to eachother...

Makensie had gone home the night before, eating a late dinner, with a glass of wine. Cody had already been in bed, and Claudia was in her sleeping quarters for the evening as well.

She still couldn't get over the fact that Clift would actually think she would allow Cody to be that far away from her.

"LOndon!", she'd said. "How absurd!"

Makensie may be a charmer, but she was also one tough cookie, and she wasn't letting any man tell HER what she was going to do with HER son...not even his own father. He's been in and out of his life, ever since Cody was born...and more OUT of his life than in, and she wasn't about to let him start playing Daddy NOW, when it was convenient for HIM. She thought alot of Clift, still, after all this time but, she wasn't a push over when it came to her son. She would protect Cody with her life....and kill anyone who harmed him, and she couldn't watch over him, if he was in LONDON.

(next morning)

Makensie got a late start this morning, since she had a restless sleep. Ofcourse, the 4 glasses of wine she had didnt go over too well either, but it sure tasted great at the time.

She'd falled asleep in her recliner, which left her with a kink in her neck, when she woke up.

Walking out the door, with Cody in tow, she was rubbing her neck, and telling him that he was going to be with her today at her office, since Claudia had personal business to attend to today. That made Cody very excited.

"Alright! I get to be with my beautiful Mommy today!", he'd said, as he skipped ahead of her a bit.

She laughed, and watched him laugh and skip.

As they were walking by the apartment buildings, which was quite close to her agency, she saw Clift walking out.

His hair was a bit tussled, and he was walking quickly down the walk, as he saw Makensie.

Seeing Cody first, he said, happily, "Hi sport!"

Hi Daddy!, Cody said, in response, as he skipped on.

Makensie yelled ahead of her, "Don't go any further than that, Cody! Wait for me"

Makensie looked at Clift, knowing exactly what he'd been doing. His hair was tossled, and there was a lipstick smudge on the collar of his shirt.

"Busy night, lastnight huh?", Makensie said.

Clift ran his fingers through his hair, and said, "It isn't what it looks like..."

Makensie laughs, and said, "Please! Don't mock my intelligence, Clift. I dont care what you've been doing, there's no need to lie about your new girlfriend"

"She isn't my girlfriend. I was just upset about a few things..." Clift started to say.

Makensie finished, "and you just needed someone to hold you"

Laughing again, to hide how much it bothered her, she said, "...and you REALLY want our son to go off with YOU to London, when it is quite obvious you have a problem with women. He would be raised with baby sitters, while YOU are off mating with every woman that comes down the pike. GIve up on the idea of Cody ever doing such thing, because it isn't happening"

Makensie began to walk off, as Clift said, "Mak, please, lets discuss this over dinner tonight or something"

TUrning around to face him, she said, "NO, thank you! YOu are not buttering me up to try to change my mind on this. I'm not THAT easy, Clift Garrett, you should know that. Our son stays with me.....I don't trust you at all" She glanced towards the apartment buildings, giving emphasis as to why she doesn't trust him to be responsible.

She walked off, taking Cody by his hand, as they continued toward her agency.

Cody turned, and smiled, while waving, "Love you Daddy"

"Love you, kiddo", Clift said, waving sadly.

Clift agreed that he brought this on himself, and he shouldn't have done what he did but he wasn't expecting to see Makensie walking down the sidewalk this morning. He also forgot that her agency was right down the road.

"Clift, you fool", he scolded to himself, as he walked away from the apartments.

Meanwhile, Makensie finally made it to her agency, marching into her office, shutting the door, as Cody walked off and began playing with his toys.

She plopped down in her chair, thinking about what she'd said to Clift.

Maybe she was a bit too hard , but she was just irritated that he would think she'd allow Cody to leave her side.

After she got some work done, she was going to contact Clift, meet for dinner, and tell him more calmly why she wasnt going to let Cody go. It wouldnt be fair to him at all.

She began thumbing through some paper work that was piled sky high on her desk, thankful that there hasnt been any crimes right now for her to deal with, as she was trying to get her agency together.

**Meanwhile**

As Clift was walking away from Vulkie's apartment building he thought back to the happenings of the past night... Vulkie's tender smile and body, their many laughs.... 'That was fun...' he thought smiling to himself.

His mother, Gary-Beth, has tried very hard to get him to marry and settle down. Yet he managed to to remain single into his thirties have various liaisons and two children came out of them.

Before leaving the apartment, Vulkie made him a King's breakfast and waited on him making him feel like royalty. 'That was nice...' he thought, '...to be treated like that...' He remembered leaving Vulkie a small note after leaving her place.

Today was his day off so walked to the park to relax and let off some steam.

***

His thoughts immediately went to Makensie. That was pretty unfortunate, bumping into her just as he was walking out of Vulkie's apartment the morning after their date. He liked all the women he encountered in his life, but Mak was special.

'The thoughts Mak must be thinking right now...' Clift wondered. Maybe he could get Violet to send Isabella over to the United States. He then remembered the importance of all that is British to Violet.

He called over a boy and gave him some money to take a note to Mak asking her again to meet him for in dinner at Sami's. He then wondered what Vulkie was doing right now... Victoria...

"Business as usual" Vulkie murmered and she dropped by at her agency office department in NY. As she entered the building, there were many friends and detectives who greeted her.

Vulkie was famous,of course she was,of all what happened to her. Even the agency clerk smiled towards her and nodded.

"Hiya George. Anything new yet on the "Mondolo" case?" Vulkie asked and the clerk began to "look" around.

"Not yet miss Vulkie. Say,we should have some lunch sometime. That would be splendid" the clerk replied and Vulkie blushed. "I'm already seeing someone at the moment George. Maybe later..." Vulkie replied and she headed towards her office.

As she entered her office, she began to look through casefiles and the time flew by.

As it was already 3 O'clock,a telephone call came in.

"Miss Vulkie,I have a certain Miss Makensie Brewer here. She wants to see you about some guy named... excuse me Miss Brewer, what was the name?.... Clift. That's the name. A certain Mr. Clift Garrett. Can I send her in?" the clerk said and asked.

"Of course" I replied and within 5 minutes,Makensie Brewer was sitting at the other side of my desk, with a chair added for her son.

"So,with what can I help you Miss Brewer?" I asked and waited for a reply...

Makensie couldn't believe she was doing this, but, Vulkie seemed like a very nice, young lady, and she felt she had to warn her of her new 'friend'.

Smiling gracefully, as she always did, she began with, "Miss Vulkie, I first want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with me. I know, from being a Detective as well, how busy one can get so, again, I thank you"

Vulkie smiled, nodded her head in response, but remained quiet, waiting on what Maskensie was about to say.

Crossing her leg over the other, as she kept her hand resting on her son's arm, she said, "I'm sure you have some what of an idea on why I am here, so I will cut right to the chase, so as not to waste anymore time than Im wasting right now. I've heard that you are the new galfriend in Clift's life. For the moment, anyway"

Vulkie frowned a bit, and said, "What do you mean by that?"

"Well," Makensie said, in response, "As I said, you seem like a nice gal, and I see how you look at him when he is around. The same way that I looked at him when we first met. I know Clift very well...as you know", and Makensie looked over at her son in emphasis, then continued on. "Not JUST because of THAT...his and I's relationship is much deeper than that. I know how he is with women. He has a woman problem. I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but, he also has a daughter, who lives in London with her Mother, and who is also a dear friend of mine. Violet Parr"

Vulkie said, "Oh yes, I've heard of Violet Parr. She is a very classy lady"

"Yes, she is. Anyway, I'm not here to keep you away from Clift...I am here to tell you to not get wrapped up with him. Don't wear your heart on your sleeve. Clift will break your heart in the end"

"I do know what Im doing, but, I thank you for your concern, and I will keep in mind all that you said", Vulkie said, a bit shaken by what she heard, as she was really starting to have feelings for Clift Garrett, no matter how *more*

quick it seemed to be happening.

Makensie looks at her, then smiles.

Cody giggled to himself, as he was lost in his toy he was playing with.

Vulkie looked over at Cody, then back at Makensie, and said, "He is a nice looking little guy. He looks like his Father, but has the eyes of his Mother"

Makensie smiled, then said, "Thank you! I am....or we are very proud of him, for sure"

Vulkie nods, then said, "I'm sure that you both are. Ummm, Makensie, if you don't mind me asking....is there something still there between you and Clift?"

Makensie grew quiet for a bit, pondering that thought, then said, "I believe there was always be something there between Clift and I, Vulkie. Not only do we share a son together, but, the only reason him and I can't have a life together is because him and I have two different lifestyles. It isn't because we don't care for one another, because we do, very much. I just can't handle the way he is. His need to be FREE. He loves women. I think he loves them TOO much, if you ask me. However, he is a good Father, when he is around....and he has a good heart. He just can't settle down with one woman, no matter what he says or thinks"

Vulkie could see in Makensie's eyes that she still had feelings for Clift, and she had a feeling that Clift shared that same feeling, and she totally respected that, and respected Makensie for stopping here to basically, watch out for her, since Makensie did know him much better than she did right now.

Makensie patted Cody's arm lovingly, letting him know they were going now, and as Makensie rose up, Vulkie did too.

Grabbing Vulkie's hands in a shake, Makensie said, "I want you to know that in no way was this is a visit to tell you stay away from Clift. I want him to be happy, but Im just saying that he is happy with WOMEN, in the plural sense, not just with one WOMAN, and I don't want you to get caught up in that. As thankful as I am to him, for giving me my son, it isn't fair to *more*

"....anyone for him to go around creating babies all over the place. I saw him leaving , what I will assume, your apartment the other morning. I do hope you both were wise in your situation, if you know where I'm getting at, as Im sure you do. Clift can't seem to control himself with women, so, I hope that you help him along in that area if you choose to be with him"

Makensie smiled, then grabbed Cody's hand, as she wished Vulkie a good day, and stepped out.

Vulkie sat down in her chair, swinging her chair around to look out the window, to watch Makensie walk down the sidewalk with her son. Clift's son.

She saw a fancy car waiting for them to get in, as a note was handed to her, she witnessed.

Makensie was definitely a charming lady, and a friendly one at that, but, she also could see the ruthless protectiveness she had in those big, blue, piercing eyes of hers.

Vulkie was a tough gal herself, but when it came to her romantic life, she seemed to be full of mush. She planned on guarding herself against Clift, until she knew she could trust him, if she ever could.

Growling, she said, "Why did lastnight have to happen with him?" She flung her pencil down on the desk, and sighed heavily.

**********************

Meanwhile, as Makensie and Cody got in the backseat, she told her driver to head home.

Cody looked at Makensie, and said, "Mommy, who was that lady back there?"

"Oh, just a friend of Daddy's sweety", she said, as she looked at this note that was handed to her from her driver.

"I liked her. She was nice", he said, smiling.

"Yes, she was, wasn't she?", she said, absently.

Reading the note, she saw it was from Clift.

It said:

Dearest Mak - Please meet me at Sami's tonight at 6pm. Just you and I. We need this time. Warmly, Clift

She shook her head, and folded the paper, as she stared out the window.

"I need to follow my own damn advice, when it comes to Clift Garrett", she said.

"What Mommy?", Cody said.

Looking at her handsome son, she said, "Oh nothing. Just talking to myself honey"

He giggled, and began humming a song that his Daddy always sings to him when they are together.

To her driver, she said with impatience, "Would you please put a move on it, Georgio? I have a dinner date at 6pm"

"Ohhh Mommy has a date. Does Daddy know?" , Cody said.

She smiled, and said, "He does know. The dinner date is with him"

His eyes grew big, and with excitement he said, "Are you guys getting back together?"

Cody's dream was for his father, and myself to get back together and be one big happy family, and that saddened her to have to always tell him that it wouldn't be happening.

"Sweety, we've gone over this before. Your Dad, and I care about one another very much, and we love YOU very much, but, him and I are just special friends, that's all. When you are older, you will understand all this stuff", she said, rubbing his hand with her own.

He turned his head away, and just stared out the window, lost in his own thoughts

When she saw that, it just made her frustrated with Clift, that he wasn't a better family man, than that.

Sighing, she watched out the window, as they drove home.
