It was the curtain call and Clift Garrett had to put on a smile.

It was not genuine…

It was not even convincing...

It was rather a smile of disbelief…

The next morning...

Vulkie woke up,made her some breakfast and got her newspaper. "Eh,why not check the mailbox also. Maybe someone has dropped a casefile in it" Vulkie thought and so,she moved towards the mailbox. When she opened it,she saw a small note in it.

"What's this?" Vulkie wondered and as she read it,her heart began to beat heavily. "Clift... You'll get your answer as soon as possible!" Vulkie thought and she rushed towards her apartment, eating her breakfast quickly and going towards the theater, hoping to meet Clift.

The director of the play didn't allow Vulkie to speak with Clift, but he reluctantly let her take a seat in the "audience".

And so,Clift came on,trying to act as a "dancer". "He's wonderful" Vulkie thought and she noticed every move of his and every line of his.

As the rehearsal ended,Clift came towards the director and he then noticed Vulkie sitting a few rows away.

He immediately rushed towards her, took Vulkie's hand and gave a small kiss. "Why,you are an early bird" Clift said. "Ah,silly man,it's only 10 0'Clock" Vulkie replied. "Let me at least treat you on a small lunch?" Clift asked and Vulkie nodded heavily.

And so,it was noon and Vulkie and Clift entered a small lunchroom...

As Clift ordered some coffee, scrambled eggs and toast for the both of them,Vulkie started talking, saying : "I've read your note. This is the answer. My real name is Victoria, but I never liked it. My dad named me so. As we were one time at a volcano in Italy, the name immediately sprang into my head. Vulkie. As a small volcano" Vulkie, excuse me,Victoria said.

"Wow... That's really interesting. A nice story. Wish that I've been through something like that. But why don't you like your original name?" Clift asked.

"I'll save that for another day Clift. You'll know soon enough ^^" Vulkie said, and with that, she began to eat her scrambled eggs and toast and sipping her coffee...

Meanwhile, back at Makensie's Estate, Cody was playing quietly in the front room, as Claudia was dusting the furniture and tidying up.

Makensie, on the other hand, was fuming, and talking out loud to herself, as she was picking up toys in Cody's room.

"The nerve of him! Telling ME he wants Cody and Isabella to grow up as sister and brother. He should've thought of THAT when he was playing Mr Wonderful to me AND Violet Parr! Cody is NOT going to London, not without me, and I'm NOT going to London either, since I've just opened up my own agency here in New York!"

Finishing up putting the last of the toys away, she marched out, telling Claudia quickly, "I will be back. Don't count on me being home for supper"

Giving Cody a quick kiss, she walked out the door.

***************
She knew right where to find Clift, and that is where she went.

Walking into the theater, she first came to a man standing by a door.

"Excuse me, miss, noone...." he started to say.

Makensie cut him off, sayng, "I don't care who isnt allowed through these door. I am the mother of Clift Garrett's son, and I'm going in"

He didn't know what to say, and Makensie didn't wait for a response.

Walking past him, as a woman on a mission, she brushed through the door, looking for her dear Clift Garrett.

Finding him in the lunch area, she saw he was sitting with a young lady. The same gal he was talking to the night before after his performance.

She was too upset to care if he was with company, but, yet, she still had sense to not air their business in front of a complete stranger. Atleast a stranger to THEIR situation, and life.

Walking in, the young woman looked up and stared at Makensie. Not in a threatening way, but, a startled expression.

Makensie smiled at the young lady, then at Clift, as she lost her smile and replaced it with a stern look.

Clift smiled uneasily, as he stood up.

"Makensie, darling, I'm surprised to see you here", Clift said, when really he wasn't surprised. He knew how Makensie was once she was fired up.

Makensie knew that as well, so she scrunched her face up, and said, "Umm, no you're not"

Clift wiped his mouth with his napkin, then said to Vulkie, "Pardon my rudeness. Vulkie, I would like you to meet Makensie Brewer. A detective like yourself, and also the Mother of my son. Makensie this is my friend..."

Makensie smiled, politely cutting him off, saying to Vulkie, "It is a pleasure to meet you, and I'm really sorry for this interruption" Looking at Clift, she said, "I would like to speak to you in private, and I promise I won't take up much of your time"

Clift looked at Vulkie, apologizing before leaving the table.

They walked out into the lobby, Makensie walking briskly in front of Clift.

Clift reached out, and gently grabbed Makensie's arm.

"Will you slow down? I'm not going to chase you through the halls, trying to talk to you", Clift said.

Makensie took her arm away from him, and said, "Working on another victim in there, I see" She looked behind him, in reference to the young lady he was having lunch with.

"Is this why you came here?" , Clift said, with a smile.

"No it isn't. I don't care who you are trying to WOO now. What I want to tell you is, I've thought about it, and Cody is NOT going to London to a boarding school"

Clift started to talk, as Makensie held her hand up to stop him.

"Hold up. I'm talking, and I mean every word I say, Clift Garrett. My son will not be away from me for one second. I can not help that you have a problem with women, and can't seem to stay out of the bed. It is YOUR fault that Cody and Isabella can not , and will not be raised together as brother and sister. Cody is not going to boarding school, and he is not living in London without ME. He is just fine where he is now, and he is getting the best of education right here in New York"

Clift breathed in, then out slowly, before speaking, as he felt his temper growing slightly himself.

"Makensie, I know how stubborn you are, and I know you are doing this because it's a control issue..."Clift said, before Makensie cut him off...again.

"I'm doing this because I love my son, and I feel he is better protected with ME. You galavant around the world like you are some Don Juan, and that is not healthy for our child"

Clift laughed, and said, "What? Don Juan? You see me as that kind of person? Look, I'm not asking for just Cody to come to London. I'm asking you too. I know you dont have your apartment in London anymore, but, we could work something out. I will take care of you and our son"

Makensie shook her head, and said, "Clift, I can't drop things here in NY because you want your son close by you. You do what you have to do in London, then when you return, stop by. You know that you are always welcome in my home...but, I'm sorry...Cody isn't going to London, so you, him, and Isabelle can be one big, happy family. I've basically raised Cody by myself and I have that right to make this decision I am making"

Clift didn't look too happy, but, he also knew that Makensie was right. She is a wonderful mother, and at his own fault, she's had to do most of the child raising on her own.

Makensie slowly walked away, leaving the theater.

Clift watched her until she left.

He secretly wished Makensie would've decided to come to London. He may be dating other women now, but, there was still something about Makensie that he loved, and kept him very intrigued. She was more to him than just the mother of his son, but, unfortunately, with his life, and her life...they just wouldn't be able to make it work. Not right now.

He slowly turned, to head back to the lunch room to finish up his lunch with his friend, deep in thought.

"So.. Victoria... I mean Vulkie..." Clift started as he sat back down with Vulkie for lunch. "That's quite interesting and different. I hope you don't have the valcano's temper though." He joked.

Vulkie wondered who that woman who just spoke to him was, but decided not ask seeing that Clift did not readily volunteer any information.

As the two kept on chatting, Clift learned many interesting things about Vulkie.

For instance, Vulkie was a tough girl, whilst Clift had only been meeting the charming ones so far. She's been through everything. Her brother died in a war between the Dies Arcanum Brotherhood and Vulkie, Joseph, Anais and Ace Masters. Her nephew also died, during the "reign" of Al Capone..

She has also been on a lot of adventures. Three of them have intensively made her emotional interrupted. He was impressed to note that she saved President Roosevelt during an "assassination" attempt on him, with the help of Heimlich VonVictor and Joseph Zeo.

Her best friends for now were Joseph Zeo, Kevin Greene, Anais Nin, Riza Hawkeye, Heimlich VonVictor, Charlie Cain.

He also learned from her that a dear friend of his was recently killed, Ace Masters. This upsetted Clift as the death of Ace Masters was truly unfortunate.

"I'm sorry about Ace," Clift spoke.

"I know, I felt terrible as well when Kevin Greene broke the news to me..." Vulkie shrugged.

The two realised that they had more in common than they initially thought. Joseph Zeo and Ace Masters were both mutual friends. Heimlich VonVictor, a dear friend of Vulkie's, was Clift's first ever agency director during his days as a detective.

Clift was enjoying his time with Vulkie so much, but had to finally excuse himself and return to rehearsals.

In the back of his mind he was thinking of a way to get Mak to change her mind and finally have his two children living in the same country. What can I do... what can I do... if she were my wife then she'd have to do what I said...

Vulkie knew she could watch the rest of the rehearsals and so she did. After the rehearsals were done,it was already 4 pm and Vulkie rushed towards Clift, asking if he would drop by at her apartment for dinner.

And so,the two of them left for Vulkie's apartment. Vulkie made a special dinner for Clift. Some nice veal steaks, with a red wine sauce and a nice red vino (wine) from 1907.

"To the acting and detective organisations" Vulkie exclaimed, while she held her glass of wine up. Clift nodded and took a small sip of the wine.

"So,who was that woman who we "met" today?" Vulkie asked.

Clift immediately turned red. This wasn't what he expected. He wanted to have an exciting, nice evening with Vulkie.

"Ehmmm..... She's one of my ex-wifes...." Clift said.

"Ex wife?" Vulkie said bluntly, with a frowning eyebrow.

"Yes... As I already told you,I once had a family. 2 lovely children and a wife. That's her... Makensie Brewer.... I wish that my boy could stay with his sister, but she won't allow it..." Clift said, breaking up in tears...

"Clift.... I'm.... I'm sorry..." Vulkie said and she began to "cheer" Cliff up.

So,the evening went by and it was already midnight, when Clift stood at the door.

"Thanks for the lovely evening" Clift said. Clift turned around,to leave, but changed his mind and kissed Vulkie full on the mouth.

It was beautiful. Vulkie took Clift back in her apartment and they stayed "busy" for the whole evening, waking up the next day to eachother...

Makensie had gone home the night before, eating a late dinner, with a glass of wine. Cody had already been in bed, and Claudia was in her sleeping quarters for the evening as well.

She still couldn't get over the fact that Clift would actually think she would allow Cody to be that far away from her.

"LOndon!", she'd said. "How absurd!"

Makensie may be a charmer, but she was also one tough cookie, and she wasn't letting any man tell HER what she was going to do with HER son...not even his own father. He's been in and out of his life, ever since Cody was born...and more OUT of his life than in, and she wasn't about to let him start playing Daddy NOW, when it was convenient for HIM. She thought alot of Clift, still, after all this time but, she wasn't a push over when it came to her son. She would protect Cody with her life....and kill anyone who harmed him, and she couldn't watch over him, if he was in LONDON.

***********************

(next morning)

Makensie got a late start this morning, since she had a restless sleep. Ofcourse, the 4 glasses of wine she had didnt go over too well either, but it sure tasted great at the time.

She'd falled asleep in her recliner, which left her with a kink in her neck, when she woke up.

Walking out the door, with Cody in tow, she was rubbing her neck, and telling him that he was going to be with her today at her office, since Claudia had personal business to attend to today. That made Cody very excited.

"Alright! I get to be with my beautiful Mommy today!", he'd said, as he skipped ahead of her a bit.

She laughed, and watched him laugh and skip.

As they were walking by the apartment buildings, which was quite close to her agency, she saw Clift walking out.

His hair was a bit tussled, and he was walking quickly down the walk, as he saw Makensie.

Seeing Cody first, he said, happily, "Hi sport!"

Hi Daddy!, Cody said, in response, as he skipped on.

Makensie yelled ahead of her, "Don't go any further than that, Cody! Wait for me"

Makensie looked at Clift, knowing exactly what he'd been doing. His hair was tossled, and there was a lipstick smudge on the collar of his shirt.

"Busy night, lastnight huh?", Makensie said.

Clift ran his fingers through his hair, and said, "It isn't what it looks like..."

Makensie laughs, and said, "Please! Don't mock my intelligence, Clift. I dont care what you've been doing, there's no need to lie about your new girlfriend"

"She isn't my girlfriend. I was just upset about a few things..." Clift started to say.

Makensie finished, "and you just needed someone to hold you"

Laughing again, to hide how much it bothered her, she said, "...and you REALLY want our son to go off with YOU to London, when it is quite obvious you have a problem with women. He would be raised with baby sitters, while YOU are off mating with every woman that comes down the pike. GIve up on the idea of Cody ever doing such thing, because it isn't happening"

Makensie began to walk off, as Clift said, "Mak, please, lets discuss this over dinner tonight or something"

TUrning around to face him, she said, "NO, thank you! YOu are not buttering me up to try to change my mind on this. I'm not THAT easy, Clift Garrett, you should know that. Our son stays with me.....I don't trust you at all" She glanced towards the apartment buildings, giving emphasis as to why she doesn't trust him to be responsible.

She walked off, taking Cody by his hand, as they continued toward her agency.

Cody turned, and smiled, while waving, "Love you Daddy"

"Love you, kiddo", Clift said, waving sadly.

Clift agreed that he brought this on himself, and he shouldn't have done what he did but he wasn't expecting to see Makensie walking down the sidewalk this morning. He also forgot that her agency was right down the road.

"Clift, you fool", he scolded to himself, as he walked away from the apartments.

Meanwhile, Makensie finally made it to her agency, marching into her office, shutting the door, as Cody walked off and began playing with his toys.

She plopped down in her chair, thinking about what she'd said to Clift.

Maybe she was a bit too hard , but she was just irritated that he would think she'd allow Cody to leave her side.

After she got some work done, she was going to contact Clift, meet for dinner, and tell him more calmly why she wasnt going to let Cody go. It wouldnt be fair to him at all.

She began thumbing through some paper work that was piled sky high on her desk, thankful that there hasnt been any crimes right now for her to deal with, as she was trying to get her agency together.
