What is the point of buying the equipment? Does it really help with the case, and if so, how?

Sorry, forgot one thing....

When you're on your own Detective Profile, off on the right hand side of the page, you'll see an area called "Adjustments". THAT is the area that tells you how much all the equipment you're wearing is worth points-wise. I just had a look at your profile, and as of this writing, you're wearing four items -- a Golden Turban, a Magnifying Glass, a Plaid Scarf, and a Black Trench Coat.

Each one of these has a point value. When you add them all up, you have +2 Tough, +3 Smart, and +2 Charm. If you have a look at the Adjustments area, it SHOULD say the same thing (unless my math is off ;-). So, when you go to question a suspect, and use Sweet-Talking, you have 2 points added to the numbers (that you prob'ly can't see) which determine whether or not the skill will work.

As you get better equipment (like the stuff I'm wearing), the point values go up, and the chances of your skills working improve. Eventually, you can get as high as +31 for one particular category, Tough, Smart or Chaming. (Down side is, you'll be at about -8 for the other two.)

So keep working at it. Your equipment WILL get better. And yes, it will become much more useful. ;-)

Hope all that makes sense and helps. ;-)

Just to add an example.
You are asking a suspect or a witness, and he/she clams up on you. If you have not experienced that yet, you will shortly... ;-)
And, being a tough detective, you might have some skills in interrogation or intimidation (which are the adviced skills for tough detectives).
You implement your "unclam" skill, and this is what happens:
The person you try to unclam, might have a base 50% chance of unclam when treated tough. The level of your skill will improve this chance of unclam. But, if your clothes have a total tough adjustment of 10, you will also get a raise in the unclam chance of 10 percentage points. I.e. the base chance will be adjusted to 60% just because of the clothes you are wearing. - and that (in addition to your skills) could be just the little extra power that you need to successfully unclam the person.
Hope this makes sense ;-)
