Considering that I'm still considered newbie to many real real veterans, I consider this question fitting to this section :-)

I guess I should prepare the gears ahead of time, as I'm planning to get judge of character and the charm skills next. I am currently using all the tough gears for my tough skills. When i have both Tough+Charm, what gears should i be getting?

I see that most people just stick to gears fitting their original skill sets; do you change when you use the other skills? wouldn't that be hm, very troublesome? (i'm lazy and hates changing around, besides, you can only do that in up to two cities- your own apartment and your agency, unless you wanna lug your apartment around...)

Clarification:

"I get a clam so rarely that it's a surprise when it happens."

Of course, all suspects eventually clam up. I mean I don't have suspects clam up on me on the first question - before I can get their alibi and/or who they suspect.

A few things that might explain some things:

With Charming gear, the Flirting factor can make an incredible deal of difference. Flirting adds another 20 points (20%) onto your Flirting numbers if you're questioning a member of the opposite gender, and that will usually put the JOC over 100%. The JOC can go upwards of 150, which makes things MUCH easier for questioning people.

You had asked what was the point of even getting Charm skills. The point is that you will come across suspects and townies that will routinely work on one side of the scale or the other (Tough or Charming), and it usually doesn't matter all that much WHAT you're wearing. But if you don't have the skills, you're not going to be able to hone in on those suspects that may now be giving you problems.

I routinely wear equipment that is highly Charming, slightly smart, and low on Tough (somewhere around +25C, +1S, -3T). However, I have one city that is the bane of my existence--London. When I'm doing hunts, it ALWAYS makes my life miserable. So, for that city alone, I keep a Tough & Smart suit in my apartment. I don't always use it, but I do keep it in case it's needed.

I've heard quite a few people say that Surveillance never works for them. I've even had several people I've mentored say that. And I've come to notice that it tends to improve for many as their experience grows (the skill usually fails when they first get it, but it succeeds more and more over time).

So, having said all that, I hope I and we have given you something to think about. Good luck with the gear. Happy hunting. ;-)

Thank you both Sleuth Sindy and Breit, that's really insightful. I realize that my Surveillance ability improved too, and now i don't need to change to smart gear before I tail suspects. Keeping a low +smarts number is also wise as well, since i notice the PE ID ability drops drastically once it goes negative. Sounds like i should start looking out for some smart gears... :-)

One last thought on this subject, and I realize it's probably one too many, but . . .

I DO change gear if I can when questioning Townies in order to get my stats as high as possible so I get the most answers possible before they clam and it really has saved me a substantial amount of money in bribes.

And THAT is all I have to say about that. :)
