"This book was written by Heimlich VonVictor & describes true events that occured during his time as a detective." As he finished these final words on his manuscript he dropped his pen onto the desk. He had just referred to himself as a detective in the past tense for the first time in his life.

He didn't want to believe that it was over, but when one takes pen to paper and scribes one's life story as a matter of record, there was a sense of finality to it.

He picked up the stack of papers before him, each page a piece of a life he would never get to live again. He looked up at the framed newspaper article celebrating his 100th case solved as a detective. It had already started to yellow and fade.

He walked over to the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of gin and a glass. Even if it was a bittersweet occasion, it called for a celebration, and that meant a good Tom Collins.

He looked up at the plaque on the wall that his agency presented him upon his retirement.

"Retirement! Psh! That's rich!" he grumbled out loud to no one in particular. He remembered the exact conversation.

Eric had called him into his office and said it very clearly, "Heim, you're a liability. Some of the stunts you've been pulling lately have got the other detectives mighty scared."

He had tried to brush it off, "I'm a liability!? Do you realize how much money I pull in for this agency each year? You should be down on your hands and knees thanking me for being able to make bank!"

Eric sighed at him, "Heim, I can't keep you on. The Baltimore incident was the last straw. We'll let you retire, and we'll let it look like it was your decision to do so. We'll keep it out of the papers."

What choice did he have? He had put on a grin, went to the dinner, accepted his plaque, and faded into obscurity.

He was reliving this oh so favorite of memories when the phone rang. Startled, he dropped his drink on the floor and the glass shattered.

Did anyone of you ever had to decide whether you would leave when someone told you, whatever may happen to that person,or that you would safe the world after that person is "gone"? Well,I had to decide. And now,I will tell you what I decided.

"Joseph.... We need to save the world from this son of a b*tch" I said and Joseph smiled. "Good. I knew you wouldn't give up. Let's think of a plan" Joseph said and so we went to Marvington's place. His place was the only safe place to think of.

"Right" I said. "This is the plan. Roosevelt is expected at downtown, near city hall at 12 o'clock. Leon will definitely will make a move,if not,Eunice will. We must prevent them from succeeding,or otherwise, the whole world will be in terror and a war will begin between Russia and America. Joseph,I want you to warn the Mayor. I don't know how you do it,just do it. Marvington, you will secure, with some "friends" of mine, the city hall. As for me... I will take care of Kobetz, when the time is right. After we got Eunice and Kobetz apprehended,we take them to the local police building and apprehend them there. I know Joseph,it's risky to drop them there, but it's the only way to do this right. " I said.

"Now,let's get some rest. Tomorrow morning,we will check our guns, get all the ammo we can get and we shall be victorious!" I said and Marvington and Joseph looked up at me and saw a true leadership in me.

*****Next Morning*****

I woke up early, 8 o'clock. I made some breakfast for us and soon,Joseph got up and sat at the table, reading the newspaper.

"Vulkie..." Joseph said, with a sigh after it. "Yes Joseph?" I asked curiously. "We've been through some tough times, you and I. After this,we'll take a break, together with Heimlich and Marvington. It's the least we can do" Joseph said. I just nodded.

The clock was ticking and it was 9 o'clock. I started to phone some friends and they all agreed to meet us there. It was the least they could do for me,but I would be in debt now.

(Oops, sorry!. I didn't read carefully. We must save Heimlich first, dumb me -.-. Let's assume this part above is afterwards).

"We must save Heimlich!" I said and Joseph and Marvington nodded and we first made sure that the Kobetz brothers and "Eunice" were away.

"Quickly" I said and we scurried towards the water. "Where's Heimlich?!" Marvington screamed.

Joseph already dived into the water and looked around. The only thing he saw was Cambridge's and Trepov's bodies.

And there,Heimlich was, strangling to get up. Joseph quickly pulled him up,with all his strength and Heimlich breathed heavily. I and Marvington were on the side and pulled Heimlich up.

"Thank... Thank... Thank you..." Heimlich said, while spitting out water. "No problem. So there's only the four of us left and we will need to come up with a plan..." I said. "But first,we need to make sure Heimlich is secure and safe" Joseph said and I nodded. We decided to go to Marvington's place. Heimlich was already in the car, while I spoke to Joseph and Marvington...

Although the neoclassic complex was built a century ago, the city hall was very well kept. Zeo could see the gleaming white building from three blocks away, and that was as close as he and Heimlich could get. The director-attorney had recovered from yesterday's episode and insisted to accompany Zeo to warn the Major. Zeo agreed, knowing Heimlich was way better at convincing people.

At the blockade Zeo presented his badge, hoping that the officers there know not of his 'holiday' status. "Sorry Lieutenant, the mayor's order." The uniformed sergeant raised his hands, "No one's allowed without a permit. The president is going to deliver his speech on the front lawn in about an hour's time."

"We need to see Mayor La Guardia, to report a planned assassination!" Zeo insisted.

"Don't you worry, Sir!" The beefy sergeant pointed at the layers of dark suits behind him."Even the Bureau of Investigation is here for the party. We've got the best of the best."

Zeo wanted to argue but Heimlich stopped him. "Poor Sergeant, you have a lot on you plate, don't you?" Heimlich smiled.

"What, what do you mean?" The big man frowned.

"Yoy know, President Roosevelt just stripped Tammany of federal patronage, along with the subversive activities across the country? He's not exactly popular here. I'm sure at this moment there're at least half a dozen rifles aimed at his head." Heimlich paused to let all the information set in, which he knew was overwhelming the poor guy's skull, "And if his head pops, so goes your shield. Your entire squad will be held responsible..."

"And what do you know!?" The man tried to sound defiant.

"Well we DO know quite a bit, enough to keep your ass where you like it. Just let us talk to the Major, that's not too much to ask for." Heimlich gave his most diplomatic smile.

The sergeant walked away without saying a word. Two minutes later he returned with 4 dark suited men. They stripped Zeo and Heimlich of any weapon and led them toward the City Hall.

Zeo and Heimlich walked through the great doors to City Hall. The men at their sides ushered them quickly through the long marble hallway. Men in black suits swarmed through the building and stared at the two men suspiciously.

"What now?" Joseph whispered, "We're in, but how are we going to explain this to the mayor?"

Heimlich shrugged. "I have no idea!" he rasped, "We have to convince him to cancel the President's speech!"

Their conversation was cut short as the men stopped them. "This is the mayor's office," One of the men said indicating a door, "and he's asked to see you alone. No funny business!"

Joseph and Heimlich were quickly pushed into the room and had the door shut behind them. Sitting in front of them, at a desk covered in papers, knickknacks, and food wrappers, sat Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.

La Guardia cleared his throat. "I understand you gentlemen believe something unfortunate may happen today during President Roosevelt's speech?" He demanded.

"Yes Mr. mayor sir!" Heimlich quickly answered, "Leon Kobetz, an assassin who has gone rogue from the Soviet Regime has illegally crossed into the country and may be planning an assassination attempt on President Roosevelt."

La Guardia rubbed his chin. "Kobetz? Isn't that the fellow we just cut loose due to lack of evidence?" he asked.

"No," Joseph interjected, "ummm sir. That was his brother who we believe may be forced into taking part in this assassination."

La Guardia shook his head and lit up a cigarette. "Now listen here boys," he explained, "Our country is in peril. We're in a place we may not get out of for a good many years. President Roosevelt coming here is giving our citizens some hope. I can't cancel now."

"With all due respect sir," Heimlich pleaded, "think about what it would do if the President were killed in front of the very people he's trying to inspire! You can't risk that kind of tragedy to occur knowing that it could be prevented!"

La Guardia narrowed his gaze on Heimlich. "Now see here boy," he said with contempt, "I don't know who you think you're talking to, but I have my best men on this. Nothing is going to happen to the President. Not today at least. Now I think it's time for you two to leave!"

Like clockwork the door behind them flew open and a man in black motioned for them to step out. They were quickly ushered out of the building as quickly as they had been brought in. Neither of them said a word as they were being led out. They both knew the implications of what had just happened.

As they were led outside the barrier the man in black addressed them, "We'll being holding your weapons until after the President has given his speech. You may pick them up at the station tomorrow."

Heim shook his head and walked away. It wasn't even worth it to argue at this point. He felt someone grab his shoulders and quickly whirled around to see Eric standing there.

"Vulkie found Kobetz... well Sergei that is!" Eric said excitedly, "We need to go get him!" With that he ran off into the crowd.

"Joseph," Heimlich quickly ordered, "follow him. I'm not supposed to be alive right now so I can't be seen."

Eric ran through the crowds of people. Why had he thrown his badge at Barnes? It would have been so useful here! He spotted Sergei standing in the front row of people and saw Vulkie standing next to him saying something. He pushed through the last wave of people and got next to Sergei just as Roosevelt began his speech.

"Sergei! What the hell is going on?" Eric demanded.

Vulkie put her finger to her lips, "Quiet Eric! Sergei is explaining!" she hissed. No sooner had she finished her statement when they were joined by Joseph.

Sergei's eyes were filled with tears. "I did not want to kill Richard Cambridge! I do not want to kill President Roosevelt, but I must or everyone will die!" he choked out.

"What do you mean?" Joseph whispered.

Sergei was shaking as he opened his jacket ever so slightly to reveal a pistol. "I must shoot the President when he stops talking and goes to leave. Leon said if I don't, there is bomb under platform that will kill everyone!"

The three detectives looked down in horror at a wire running under the platform. It ran through the crowd among several microphone wires.

"Leon tell me if I don't shoot Roosevelt, then everyone here will die including Roosevelt. Bomb will kill entire crowd!" he sobbed.

Eric grabbed Sergei by the shoulders, "Okay Sergei," he said calmly, "where is Leon?"

Sergei shook in place. "In building back there with Natasha. Third floor, that is where wire runs. Has detonator!"

Eric felt his heart racing, but knew this was no time to stall. "Vulkie," he ordered, "you have to go to those agents and get a message to the President that he has to keep talking no matter what. Joseph, go find Heimie and go get Natasha and Leon."

Vulkie smiled at Eric. "So what are you doing Mr. Taking charge all of the sudden?" she teased.

Eric let out a deep sigh. "I am going to attempt to disarm the bomb."

Vulkie and Joseph both gasped. "No!" Vulkie hissed, "It's too dangerous! You could die!"

Eric nodded. "Well then I die for my country."

Vulkie shook her head. "There has to be another way! We can stop Leon!" she pleaded.

Eric smiled. "I'm not planning on dying Vulkie. We need to make sure that bomb doesn't go off if Leon is able to hit the detonator. But just in case I do die..." he said as he grabbed Vulkie and planted a kiss on her lips, "I might as well go out with a bang!"

With that he ran off into the crowd looking for a way under the platform.

My god,I thought. Eric just kissed me. But it felt all wrong. I still had Ace as a "boyfriend". But then again,it felt so good. I... I... I am so confused at the moment. But there was no time for that.

As the clock struck 11 o'clock,I saw the limousine of Roosevelt driving towards the city hall. "Sergei, stay here. If I don't make it in time at noon, you must do what you've got to do..." I said. "But what you ask is impossible. Assassinate President of USA is impossible" Kobetz said. "If anything is certain,if history has taught us something, then you can assassinate anyone" I said and with that,I left.

"Stand back" the men in black suits said, with sunglasses on. "The president must be safe at all costs" as I rushed towards them.

"Mr President" I shouted. "Mr President!". But the President just walked into the city hall.

Can you believe you have to do something so absurd, that you would risk your life with it? I had to do it...

And so,I rushed into the city hall. I went to the Mayor's office, knocked the guards in front of the door out and got into the Mayor's office.

"Mr. President, this is urgent! Believe me! You will be assasinated if you give that speech. Or else, the audience will die because of a bomb. I believe two friends of mine already said it,but the mayor is too stubborn. I'm sorry Mr. President, but I have to do this"

And so,I pulled my gun out and I took President Roosevelt in a firm grip, using him as a shield and walked away, into the open....

As soon as the audience began to applause,it grew all silent and screams were going on. The audience was in a terrible state, seeing that I "kidnapped" the president of the United States. One of the black suited men came rushing towards me,but the President barked : "Back up,or she's gonna shoot me. Do nothing. It will be alright" the President said and so the black men took care of securing the area.

"Mr President, this is for your own good. I already explained it to you. We've got 15 minutes left, until the decision has to be made." I said and we looked at the clock ticking away.

"Goddamn it Eric, what is taking you so long" I thought and just then,a shot fell and I was wounded.

Surprisingly,it was Sergei Kobetz who shot me....

"That man is a hero!" the audience said and they began to cheer.

And just then, the President began his speech....

*Clarification- Eric thought he heard Roosevelt begin his speech, but it was actually an introductory speaker.*
