What Can We Do to Help Sleuth?

Last night I spoke of some ideas I wanted to discuss with everyone on how to give a little kick-start to Sleuth. I would like to share these now and hear feedback. These things are not required of the Admin, but things we can do as a community to try to get things flowing again.

NOTE: Please do not bring up the development team. That ship has come and gone. This post is aimed purely at community-oriented initiatives, not changing the game itself.

Also, I would like to note that many players have been doing some really good things around here. The contests for free subs, ctown's radio show, AVH matches. I do not mean to discredit any of this. It's all wonderful. I just think we can do a little more :-)

#1 Advertising - Let's get out there and spread the word. This is a great little gem that we have found and there are probably others that would love it as much as we do. Do you belong to another internet site? A Group for Nail-Biters with Herpes? Post on the message board about Sleuth! (well maybe not that, but you get my meaning) Let others know outside of Sleuth what a great place this is. I would especially target (for Noir) adults who enjoy logic-type puzzles. That is what kept me addicted to this game for so long.

Had a thunk a minute ago....

One complaint/hissyfit/temper tantrum that I've heard a lot from Unsubbeds over the years, especially in the Cabaret, is/was about their inability to travel to the various other cities like their bigger siblings, the Subbeds can. I wonder if there might be a way to allow certain Unsubbeds that ability, to gain a taste of honey, so to speak, and possibly encourage their willingness to subscribe.

Now. Before some of you start up the hate mail, please hear me out.

I did say CERTAIN Unsubbeds. What if it were possible to be able to allow rank Beginner newbie Unsubbeds (as in up to 10 days exp., no more), to be allowed to travel to any of the three major cities? These detectives could have the incentive of traveling to one city (or more, if they can afford it) abroad, check out what said city is like, and at the end of the ten day Beginner period, wind up back in NY. Even if said people are in the middle of a case, favor, or little job, the system could automatically send them back to NY at turnover of day 11, same as happens on the Sleuthetania. The Unsubbeds won't be given more cases; they'll simply be given the chance to try out something that Subbed people do (and enjoy) all the time. And yes, the Beginner Unsubbeds would still have to earn the money to travel, same as the rest of us do.

One further advantage to this idea--Tough Unsubbeds could potentially have the chance to earn Pugilism in either London or Delhi (a fact that has never sat well with me because Charming Unsubbeds have an automatic advantage right now.).

While this will involve some programming on the part of Admin, let's face it, until we get at least a couple people up to speed on the programming aspect of Sleuth (which will take time regardless of what we want to do with Sleuth), Ben and Company are still stuck with sole programming duties. Sorry, Ben.

Okay, let the hate mail flow. ;-)

No hate mail Breit, just a thought;)) I think your idea has merit but I seriously doubt that Beginner newbies would be able to find sufficient travelling money and cases to spare.

Btw I tried to vote today but the link doesn't work anymore. I log into the home page of topwebgames. Anyone else have that problem?

I remember something a while ago about an internship where newbies can be in an agency (but not use the equipment locker) and travel around for the first ten days. Something like that, anyway I'll do some searching and see if can find a link.

Breit, I think it's a great idea but maybe 15-20 days old or even 20-25 days old. That way, people might stick a long a little bit longer (ie ten more days ;) ) but more importantly will have more money, and more of an idea what city/faction they want to check out.

Without spamming, can we make sure this link stays on the last page because I am too lazy to keep finding it. :D

P.s Does anyone know if Jayisgames/Causal Gaming reviews web-based games such as Sleuth or is it just flash games?

Leddy all you need to do is ass it to your favorite places so you don't have to keep coming here to look! ;-)

The 10-day time period was simply an arbitrary time period, chosen mostly because it's the period when Newbies go from being Beginners to just plain ol' Newbies. It might indeed be an idea to give Unsubbeds a bit longer to travel, say for the first 15 days, so they have a bit more time to save up some money, and get their feet on the ground, so to speak.

One thing many Newbies forget to do is tackle favors as soon as they can. This may give them extra incentive to go check out the Townies as soon as they can. Again, just thoughts. ;-)

Wow, ctown, that was quite the typo or was it?

On top web games we finished 93rd for the week with 103 votes! A new voting week just started and we have 2 votes and are still 93rd!

As for unsubbed players getting to travel... maybe after they get so many experience points they can unlock one trip to a different city. They can have however long in that city before they have to go back to NY. Making them have so many experience points lets us know that they have an idea of what they are doing and helps them get the money they need for the trip.

I think just saying that for this amount of time you can travel might get messy, some newbies (like I was) don't get much money at first, depending on if their clients are guilty, if they need to bribe townies, etc and some of them may get mad/annoyed that their time ran out before they could get enough money to travel. Like dangling a carrot in front of a rabbit and pulling it away just before it can reach it!

I think letting unsubbed players travel would be great incentive for them to sub or just keep playing.

Yeah... that is my two cents... though I doubt it was worth that much... maybe half a cent.

Hello all, I'm missing everything due to RL. Most importantly, I voted! Thanks, Ben, for giving us your thoughts and congrats to all the new promotions.
