Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

I glanced up at the large clock again. Each tick and each tock drove my mind farther back into the past. A past I had left behind ten long years before. A past I was facing now.

But first came the waiting. I hate waiting.

I glanced around the station again. Deserted. Not a soul in sight. Strange, considering that this used to be a bustling train station ten years ago. I pulled the letter out of my shoulder bag to look at it again.

"Anais, Be at Winchester Station, Platform 7 at 23.00, 2/15. ~Lisette"

Lisette. Could I really face her after all this time? Well, I was about to find out. With a shaking hand, I shoved the letter deep into my bag. Where was she? It was 23.17. Lisette had never been late in the twenty plus years I had known her. What was going on?

When Joseph screamed ''GO!!!'' I stepped on the gas pedal, going 90 miles per hour in a busy street. The La Cosa Nostra people also went 90 miles and chased us. ''Bang,Bang'' I heard and the rear mirror was broken. Joseph and Anais fired back and I needed to try and shake the Cosa Nostra off. I quickly drove in an alley, but it was a dead end. Behind us stood some Cosa Nostra people, blocking the only way out. They grabbed their tommy guns. I screamed ''DUCK!!!'' and I reversed the car, backing out of the alley. I hit at least one Cosa Nostra member, because I heard some screaming.

We went off towards my apartment. Joseph needed some rest and Anais tried to conversate with me....

"Your place isn't safe either, Vulkie." I interrupted. "La Cosa Nostra knows you and they won't let you off the hook that easy." I looked back beyond the broken windshield. The street was quiet in this part of town at midnight. It seemed that we were not being followed. "Thank you for doing this, Vulkie."

Vulkie smiled. "So where should we be heading?"

I told Vulkie an address -- the place I was asked to bring Anais to. I was not supposed to let anyone know, but Vulkie was not just anyone. I trusted her with my life. I just hope Lisette would understand. She's not the understanding type, but what had to happen, had to happen. The car roared as Vulkie made a few turns.

I felt sick to my stomach. All the turns, the fear welling up inside me, the dread of seeing Lisette again, "STOP!" I bellowed.

"What?!" the car jerked again as Vulkie reacted to my screaming.

"NO! Keep going! We're almost there, Vulkie. Turn right at the next corner, and we are there!" Joseph urged Vulkie on.

She turned, and stopped the car. I fumbled with the door, managed to open it, and tripped over my feet, falling to the ground, and managed to hit my head on the car as I went down. Vulkie and Joseph hurried out, grabbed me by either arm, dragged me up, and helped me to the door, where Lisette was waiting.

"Hello, Lisette. How are you?" I managed to weakly greet as I was dragged across the threshold and placed on the couch. I tried to sit up, but I felt so woozy with my head was spinning. Then, all I saw was black.

Anais fainted. She didn't feel too well. Joseph and I brought her up,towards Lisette's apartment. Lisette opened the door,Anais managed to say hello and then she really fainted. We layed her on the couch, making it as comfortable as we could. With some pillows and a blanket.

''Lisette, what is it you wanted to see Anais for and why did you send Joseph?'' I asked.

''Well, there is a matter in fact, about a golden statuette. It's called the Priceless Statuette of Bha Zhing Ze.''

''What about it?'' I asked. ''Well,it is a very special statuette. It gives the owner great knowledge and power, but I didn't knew the combination for the mechanical lock. There is a paper inside, and on that paper stands the way on how to get the knowledge/power.''

''But why did you send Joseph?'' I asked. But I already knew the answer. Lisette told us that it was too dangerous to go for herself.

''Where is the statuette?'' I asked. Lisette grabbed the statuette from her safe and just as she handed it towards us,we heard three knocks on the door...

''Open up Lisette,we know you are in there. So are you Vulkie,Joseph and Anais!''. A familiar voice. Fredo Sicily was standing outside, with an army of Cosa Nostra people. At least 20 people. I escorted Lisette and Joseph outside via the fire escape and I grabbed Anais over my shoulder. Just as I was outside, the door was broken open. Fredo stepped inside and saw me. I gave him a good middlefinger and I went downstairs. I heard him yelling that they needed to follow us.

When I was down,I saw Lisette and Joseph already in the back seat, waiting for me. Joseph took Anais over and I quickly went for the drivers seat. I gave Lisette my gun and Joseph still had his,but not with many bullets. I started the car and just as we drove by,I heard a big explosion. It seemed that somebody carbombed the Cosa Nostra people's car and I saw Fredo angry stamping on the ground.

I didn't know where we headed for,but I hoped Anais would know, because she just woke up...

Someone was helping us, I was sure. The explosives didn't just crawl into La Cosa Nostra vehicles by themselves. Who was it, and why? I wondered.

Anais was still woozy, but she glanced at the statuette in Lisette's hand. Her eyes were filled memories.

"Welcome back, Anais. It's been a while. You look... older." Lisette said with a chill in her voice, she then turned to Vulkie, "Take the next left." The car screeched. Vulkie continued to follow Lisette's direction.

"Where are we going?" Vulkie asked.

"You'll see." Lisette said. I could tell Lisette still didn't trust Vulkie. I was surprised that she told her that much back at her place.

We finally stopped in front of a grand and impressive building. Vulkie dropped us off and said she will go get rid of the car. I held onto the wobbly Anais and climbed the steps after Lisette.

Lisette took out large key, unlocked the padlock and removed the chain at the grand double door. She closed the door behind us and chained the door from the inside.

"Hey, how will Vulkie come in?" I asked.
"She isn't coming in." Lisette said coldly.
"How could you do that! She just helped us big time!"
"The less she's involved, the better off she is. Let's say that this is how I am repaying her." Lisette continued to lock the door. The lady left me speechless.

I looked around the lobby of the nameless building we were in. There were poster boards of yesteryear's fabulous acts all around: Saturday Night, The Three Sisters and LeGallienne's little company's stock of Ibsen, Goldoni's La Locandiera.

"We used to come here so often." Anais said, a longing sadness in her voice, "What happened to this place?"
"The crash happened, baby. We're no longer in the roaring twenties, if you haven't noticed. Abandoned theatres were all over town. Father bought this place at the wrong time, thought the market would bounce back." Lisette looked at the floor, "It never did. Now, it's only serves as a memory, just like everything else."

Lisette led us into what used to be a VIP room. She turned on the light. I was surprised that it was actually working. She sat down on the silky couch, still holding the statuette, and said to Anais, “Now, what is the combination?” Anais was quiet. “Don’t play dumb now, I know you were at the Golden Gates Restaurant. I know you heard.” Lisette lean forward, “I know what. you. saw.”

Fear from yesterday’s memory filled Anais’ eyes.

I dumped the car in a underground parking garage, set it on fire and took a cab back towards the building where everyone was. When I tried to open the door,it was locked. I made a kung fu kick at it,but it didn't open and I had another problem; my foot hurted like hell. I quickly went over to the alley and found a ladder. Useful,I thought by myself. I lifted the ladder, set it up against the wall and smashed a window in. Hopefully dad will not see me like this,or else he would be mad as hell xD.

When I entered the building,I was in the room where they stashed some stuff. Like props etc. I silently opened the door, and made my way towards the VIP room. I knew Lisette would be there,Lisette was considered as a VIP,all know over the city.

I stopped at the door, listening. ''Don't play dumb now,I know you were at the Golden Gates Restaurant.'', I heard Lisette say. I took my gun out and bashed the door in. What I saw next was horrible...

"Ette, please!" I pleaded, shaken by what I saw in her eyes. Hatred. Loathing. I shivered as a glint flashed through Lisette's eyes at the sound of her childhood nickname.

"Don't you dare call me that again, Anais. You lost that right when you abandoned me and Father. For what?" She sneered at me, advancing and trapping me in the corner.

"Lisette! Don't scare her more than she already is!" Joseph interjected.

It was too late. Lisette already had my neck in her hand, choking me.

Just then, Vulkie burst in, gun drawn, and shouted at Lisette, "Drop Anais, and I won't shoot, Lisette!"

Thunk. I hit the ground.

"How did you get in here?" I heard Lisette demand of Vulkie as Joseph hurried toward me.

'Not again' was my last conscious thought before all went black.

I slowly came out of my faint to the pungent odor of smelling salts. I batted them away, and struggled to sit up. Joseph helped me up, and sat me down on a plump chair with moth holes.

Vulkie and Lisette were arguing. "Ladies. Please," I tried to say in a loud, strong voice. It came out a whisper. I tried again. "Lisette! Vulkie! Sit down. You too Joseph." That was better.

"Why should I listen to anything you have to say, Anais?" Lisette sneered at me.

"Why, my dear sister, no more than, what, five minutes ago, listening to me was the only thing you wanted to do," I smiled sweetly.

All three took a seat, pulling the chairs to surround a table. I waited till they had all settled in.

"So, you want to know why I left all those years ago, Lisette? I think it would be more informative to learn how you found me. I was supposed to be untraceable. You must have been looking the whole time I was gone," I raised my eyebrow at her.

She stared steadily back at me. She was no longer my little shadow, I realized. "Get on with it, Ana," her voice still hard, but, her eyes were not. I had made my point, at least.

"You know I was at Golden Gates. I never should have gone..." I trailed off, lost in memories.

"Anais?" Joseph prodded me.

"Sorry," I shook myself back to the present, "I was at GG because of Poppa. He had asked me to go. Talk to somebody. So I went," Lisette looked like she about to interrupt. I shook my head at her and continued, "I went, sat at the table I was supposed to sit at, and ordered a glass of water. The table was the one behind the screen, you know, the one we always wanted to sit at, but Poppa would never let us?" I directed this last part at Lisette.

"That table?" Lisette sounded skeptical.

"Yes, that table. So, I was sitting there, when suddenly a man slid in across from me, saying, 'You are Moliere Nin's eldest, corriger?' I replied, 'Oui, mais mon Français n'est pas bon.'"
