Hi all -- Breit is recovering from her to-do this summer and my mother is gearing up for a round of radiation therapy, so I'm really trying to bring some cheer to our holidays. I'm doing everything I can think of, including Dungeness crab and Canasta for Christmas Eve and a movie night this weekend. But my question to you all is, What are some of your holiday traditions? And yes I don't care which holiday you celebrate, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas or none of these; I just want to see if I can find some ideas and have a laugh at the same time. So Happy Holidays and let fly all!!!

One fun game that we used to play but unfortunately dont any longer is the safety pin game. Everyone gets a safety pin when they arrive. They pin it on their shirt. The object of the game is to collect all the safety pins by the end of the nite! How do you acquire the safety pins you ask? Well since nobody likes negativity, anytime you hear someone say the word "no" you call them out on it and take the pin away from them and add it to yours. If someone has 5 pins and you catch them, you get all 5 pins! I know it sounds a bit boring, but once things get going it becomes rather comical. Of course you could pick any buzz word you like as well!

OK this is a sidebar.

Mak- When I first read your post I literally thought it was a real pickle. And I was thinking it was somewhat interesting that you kept hiding the same rotten pickle year over year. lol.

LOL to all. First off for Mak, I have actually heard of the Christmas Pickle thing, now that I think about it. It was common in Germany, especially since there used to be (and to a certain extent still is) a large cottage industry making hand-blown glass ornaments. Also, the Germans LOVE pickles and the combination of sweet and sour (think sourbraten). So that should have hit me when I asked you the follow-up question. Oh well, holiday mind-blank moment.

Ctown, i LOVE your game too. Not sure which word we'll choose, but I'm going to try that one tomorrow night for the pizza party and movie night!

And Crunch, dear Crunch... We already have a similar tradition. It's called "Save the Tree" because my cat (the one that got us started on keeping cats again) has had a habit since he arrived of staring at the tree, doing a nice butt-wiggle, and then launching himself as high as he can jump into the tree (every year, usually two to three times during the Season). Now, you'd think with an engineer in the family (my father) that he'd put the tree up so it could stand up to anything. Unfortunately, not so. The tree normally falls over with a whoosh upon impact with a ten-pound cat hurtling himself through the air to land on a spot above the center of gravity. Since a lot of the ornaments are glass and we really don't want to have to reassemble our tree every time he does this, the closest person usually tries to 'rescue the tree'. Normally without success. It crashes down, scatters all the ornaments and leaves a very freaked-out cat. (You'd think he'd get the idea that that was going to happen but i guess that cat at least isn't as smart as we thought when i brought him home--or he likes the dramatic effect.) So after we extricate said cat, put the tree back up, put the ornaments back on the tree, sweep up the pieces of the ones that didn't make it, and shoo the cat away from the tree (esp if he's got that wild-eyed look on his face and is madly swishing his tail),

we ALL need a nice cup of something cheerful (sometimes of the artificial kind) and a moment to sit back and consider our work (and the positive value of continuing to have my cat--sometimes have to think on that until he turns into a piece of lap candy again and seduces us all over again). Hope that gives you a chuckle in return. Happy Holidays all. (Breit is really enjoying all these, so it's a perfect (or should i say purrfect) thing for her!!) Thank you all and keep them coming!!!!!!!!

LOL that reminds me of my Mom's cat when he was younger. (and MUCH lighter)....we'd be watching tv, then all of a sudden, we would see the tree shake. There Sam would be...up in the tree....NOW if he did it, he would definitely knock it over because he's grown quite fat in his older years lol He still takes his paw and swats the ornaments across the room...to which everyone yells SAM!...and he runs off feeling all frisky. Im also sure we will have another year of hollering at him, as he tries to play soccer with the ornaments :) Crazy cat but you have to love'em : )

Now they have a dog who tries to use the tree as a back scratcher. Be interesting once the decorations are on it. Im sure she will be getting a few light swats on the butt here and there lol

we always had Manhattan style clam chowder with fresh clams and fresh bread for dinner Xmas eve. that's the chowder made with tomato juice instead of cream

My mom always got about 6 pounds of chocolates-she was the school secretary! We used to try to guess the centers and swapped if we didn't like them. Mr. Dog got what nobody liked. If you found a chocolate cherry, you had to show it around, so everyone could search the box for another one. Evidently the swirls on the top of the chocolates are a mark telling what is inside. We never could remember, so we just nibbled at them! I know that sounds gross but we were kids !!

We usually got a few board games for gifts. We spent the mornings in our PJs playing the new games, figuring out the rules and eating warm danish. My dad likes to bake and sometimes he would make them.

For years we had turkey for dinner, but then everyone decided that we hateed eating left overs forthe next week so my mom started to make chicken or leg of lamb.

At new years we went to a matinee, and then had Chinese food and then birthday cake or ice cream because it's my birthday!

Ok this isn't a tradition but it's christmas related so I hope you don't mind me putting it here :)

This year is going to be the first year I have Christmas dinner with my mum AND my Dad. My parents divorced when I was a baby and I grew up with my Dad. Mum has always had Christmas with her partner whilst me and Dad have always gone to my grandmas with the rest of the family. But this year it's not only the first time I'm cooking Christmas dinner but also the first time I have it with Mum and Dad. So whilst I'm 23 it's probably the most exciting Christmas I've ever had :D I should point out that they get along better now they're divorced just in case anyone's thinking it could all end up in tears :)

Of course that may change once I realise I've served raw turkey, burnt roast potatoes and lumpy garzy :D

Anyway sorry for interupting the traditions, keep them coming they're great to read :D
