...

“He’s just gone!”

“What do you mean gone?”

“I mean gone, detective, disappeared without a trace.”

“Barry Grant? Gone?”

“…”

“And what do you expect out of me?”

“What should I expect out of you?”

Miss Violet Parr recomposed herself, having been caught off guard by Mr. Garrett’s sudden dryness in speaking with her. She was not used to dealing with the more direct type of detectives. Though Miss Parr has been assertive and even aggressive herself in the past, she always felt more comfortable when charm was being used.

Nevertheless, she smiled politely. “Mr. Garrett, please let me thank you first, for being such a gentleman during the conductor incident.” She sighed. “There was a time where I could travel first class legitimately all the time.”

“Was that the time when you knew Barry Grant?”

“Oh yes it was.” Violet looked Mr. Garrett’s anticipating eyes. She recalled what it felt like to be a new detective on a case. She maintained her smile throughout her speech. “I have given you my warning and I will now answer all your questions, as promised. Yes it was during the time I knew Barry Grant. He was a gentleman and most definitely a charmer. He always felt like a brother to me and although we met only once during our careers as detectives…” Violet Parr stopped.

She could not believe that fact: Violet has indeed only met Mr. Grant once throughout her career as a detective, in that hospital room where she introduced herself to him in the few minutes she had before leaving. The rest of her communications with Mr. Grant took place over letters, telegrams and various notes and parcels. Miss Parr could not believe that someone she considered so close and dear only saw her once.

“Continue please, Miss Parr.”

“Right.” Violet turned her attention to Clift once more. “When I was younger, a member of my family was murdered, my aunt Arabella Arundel, and I was a prime suspect. Barry Grant was the detective hired to solve the case, and though I had no alibi he overlooked that matter and finally proved my innocence. I was indebted to him and had to warn him when I came across some information that I believed was related to his case against HYDRA.”

“I warned him when he was in the War Department’s hospital, although I was breaking into a classified facility. I had heard Mr. Frank Georges, noted criminal mastermind and previous owner of the Marquee Theatre, threaten to kill Barry. Later, my investigations and prying, with the help of my good friend Detective Christopher Keller, now retired, and the help of various other friends including Ran, Yoyo and Dr. Harrelson, revealed that Frank Georges had intended to end my life all along rather than Barry’s.”

“It turned out that due to linguistics, I misunderstood my name for Barry’s when it was uttered. I also discovered that Aisha Georges, the Arab wife of Frank Georges, is my birthmother. I was devastated: The woman whom raised and loved me all my life was not my true mother! It explained a lot, she was always a little harder on me than she was on my siblings. I had always believed that it was simply because I was the only girl in the family and she had favoured the boys. Of course, that could still be true, but I will now always wonder if it is.”

A single tear ran down Miss Parr’s cheek. Clift offered her his handkerchief, but she gently declined and used her own purple one.

“I disappeared shortly afterwards, leaving my good friends behind in Shanghai. I never heard from most of them again.” She swallowed nervously. “I went to Shangri La and spent months there, meditating and calming myself. I re-emerged composed, smiling and happy once more: At peace with myself and all others. Of course, I never wanted to see the likes of Frank and Aisha Georges again, but I managed to somehow wish them well.”

“I returned to London. As my train reached Victoria Station, there was a huge explosion and a woman who sat opposite me throughout the journey was killed. My detective instincts kicked in and with the help of my good friend Yoyo, I started investigating her death and the train explosion at Victoria.”

“This was followed by a series of unfortunate events: my brother Leopold lost his job due to his leaking of information that I needed from the Yard. My father, Sir Albert Parr, was taken ill. I stopped working and retired as a detective and started living off my savings. Leopold lost his London apartment and moved in with me. I kept all this from my parents and my savings were now supporting the both of us.”

“Did you tell your mother and father about your discovery? About her not being your real mother?” Clift was intrigued.

“No, I did not tell a soul. Very few people know and I intend to keep it that way.” Violet was somewhat distressed. “It is not easy, Mr. Garrett, to be a child of two different cultures -especially if one culture has taken over control of the other. It was always difficult growing up half British, half British-Indian, but I had made peace with my English and Indian backgrounds. I had no energy or desire to realise and accept the truth of being half English and half Arab. I decided to entirely ignore my discovery and not burden my father with any guilt or regret he may already feel because of it.”

Clift gave Miss Parr a few minutes of silence, before starting once again. “Miss Parr, you still haven’t answered my questions about Mr. Grant.”

“Yes, how foolish I must seem to you.” Violet spoke with a degree of embarresment. “I cannot control the direction of my thoughts or speech at times.” She gave him a broken smile. “Barry’s disappearance came shortly before or after mine, I can’t remember which. However, I can tell you this: It caused a lot more of a stir than my disappearance did. I don’t know where he went, I never encountered him during my time at Shangri La with the Tea Steepers, nor during my time in London after I returned and kept a low profile. He may have disappeared due to personal issues rather than professional purposes. I do not believe that he disappeared whilst working on a case. Something happened, something that may have upset him and lead to give up detection altogether. I am not exactly sure what. I honestly do not know.”

“You’ve answered once question Miss Parr,” Clift pressed on. “I want to know who told you about my investigation, and why have you followed me from London to Aylesbury. I need to know where Barry Grant is right now.”

“Dr. David Adams’ wife, Breitkat Pfeiffer, is one of my only remaining close friends in New York. She is dear to me and I hold her in the highest regard. She informed me that my name was mentioned by you in the course of the investigations. She also told me you met with Dr. Adams himself at the War Department "an honour for any new detective. The rest I uncovered through my own personal sources.”

“Dr. Adams told me that you retired and moved to Bombay with your family.”

“Yes, that was my intention. Life in India would be so much more... energetic than life here in London, but I could not make the move... financially. My funds would run out.” Violet paused a little before continuing. “I followed you because I hope you find Barry, so much will return to my world if he is found.”

“Miss Parr,” Clift leaned closer to her. “Do you know where he is?”

“I haven’t the faintest clue.”

Clift sat silently before Violet.

He was sure that the woman before him had been through a lot, and has seen more than he did. Yet, he could not bring himself to take in all the drama that she has encountered in her life. Clift felt that perhaps she was one of those people who took life too seriously for their own good. There was a place on her road where she simply went wrong.

Not wanting to undermine Violet's story or be in any way insulting, Clift said: "Miss Parr, thank you for your trust and information. You have been helpful to my investigations. This is my card." Clift handed her his card. "I look forward to meeting with you again when I'm in London."

As the train pulled into Paddington Station, Clift gently pulled himself from Violet's presence. Miss Parr has lived up to her name in being a very charming lady. But Clift was on a mission, and whenever he was on a mission no one's charm can make him lose sight of his initial goal.

Looking from afar he made sure she was off the train safely before leaving her as a boy helped her with her purple luggage.

As the group of detectives left the train Yoyo entered their coach, just missing them. He couldn't believe Clift was this hard to find. Yoyo had gone to the prison to see Clift and Becky. There, the prison guard told him that Clift had left earlier and was heading back to London. Becky could wait she was going to be in the slammer for a long time. Looking over the number of people in the train station yoyo realized he would never find Clift in this crowd with out some help. However he decided that London just wasn't doing it for him and made way to the office to pack his bag and return to London.

Monday 6:36 - New York

Makensie was in New York on business. She woke from a good nights rest, and was feeling great.

Her first stop was to the local coffee shop. She couldn't even focus without her first cup of coffee. Especially a MONDAY morning.

Walking out into the cold morning, she took a sip of coffee, and began her day.

Rounding the corner, she almost bumped into a gentleman coming from the other way, as she excused herself. She really didn't look at who it was, but apparently he knew her.

"Excuse me...Ms Brewer?", he said. She looked at him, and she really couldn't recognize him very well. His coat was zipped all the way up, and his hat pulled down where his face was shadowed. "Do.....I know you?", she said, slowly.

"I don't think you do. I've been following you for quite some time now. I've been sent to warn you", he said. 'Warn me? of what?", she asked, thinking, I really don't need this at the start of a Monday morning. She looked at him, and says, "Well?" "To leave this Barry Grant case alone", he said, in a gruff voice. "I'm sorry SIR, but, I have no idea what you are talking about. I am not investigating Barry Grant. Now, if you will excuse me", and she begins to walk off.

"You know who is though, Ms Brewer, and I would advise you to tell your friend to back off. This is a serious thing he is getting himself into", he said. Makensie fiddled with her coffee cup, not the least bit intimidated, and says, "If you have any problem with who is investigating Barry Grant you can take it up with them. I am already behind in schedule, Mr whoever you are, so I am leaving now. You've already wasted enough of my time"

He didn't respond anymore, just stood there, as she walked off. She was thinking, "I have to contact Clift Garrett somehow to let him know of this" She decided along her way, she would stop by the agency he works at, to see if he was in.

She made her way to Obelisk Inc, and walked in. There sat a woman, hard at work, not seeming to pay attention to Makensie at first.

She walked up, and softly, says, "Excuse me, ma'm?" The woman looked up, and not very pleasant, says, "Yes? What can I do for you?" Makensie smiled, and says, "Ummm, yes...well, I am looking for Clift Garrett. Is he in?" She put her pencil down, took her glasses off, and says, "Who are you? I don't think I've ever seen you before. I wasn't aware that he had a girlfriend, but then, he is not around much these days to even know of his personal life" Makensie chuckled a bit, and says, "Oh no....Ms.....I'm sorry, what is your name?" She sighed, with impatience, and says, "My name is Osberta Rudisill" Makensie nods, continuing, "Ms Rudisill, I am not a girlfriend of Clift's. Just a good friend. I really need to talk to him. It's very important" Osberta Rudisill was a very unpleasant woman, who didn't have time for small things. In a sarcastic manner, she says, "Oh, I am just sure it is but, he is not here right now"

"Do you know when he will return?", Makensie asked.

"If I knew, I would tell you.....and who are you?", she asked. "I'm Makensie Brewer. I'm a detective out of London. Dawg Pound Investigations." She nods, says, "Ahhh yes. I've heard of that agency. Anyway, I am sorry but, he is not here, and I must be getting back to work"

Makensie thought, Well, she certainly is a bundle of sunshine. "Can you please get a message to him?", she asked. "Do I look like a messaging service, Ms Brewer?" There was silence for a bit, then she says, with another one of her sighs, "Okay. What would you like me to tell him?"

Makensie handed her a note. "This is all I need to be said", she replies.

The note says

Clift

Please contact me as soon as possible. I really need to talk to you.

Mak

Osberta looks at it, then looks at her, and says, "Short and sweet huh? Having a lovers spat are we?"

Makensie made no comment, because she doesn't feel she has to repeat herself, saying that there isn't a romantic connection. No matter how she feels when she spends time with him, she thinks.

Makensie was a person who always remained pleasant, & very lady like but, this woman here was making it very tough to be friendly.

Osberta smiled, although not a warm one, when Makensie didn't respond to that comment, and says, "I will make sure your message gets to him. Since this is ALL I have to do with my time" Makensie ignored her sarcasim, and says, with no longer a hint of friendliness in her voice, "Thank you, Ms Rudisill. I'm glad to be able to keep you busy, so you can actually earn your money here" Osberta gasped, but Makensie walked out before she could say anything.

Makensie believed she was a very hard working woman, but, the look on her face was worth it all, when she said that to her.

Hoping to hear from Clift soon, she carried on with her daily business.
