To celebrate 1 year on The Intelligence Agency we are holding a couple of Birthday Party contests!

The first one is an Arch Villain Hunt in 50 Words or less.

Heres the Idea: You are hunting an Arch Villain. Using a given opening line, you must write a story that uses 50 words or less.

The opening line does not count toward your word total.

I could tell the Holy Man knew something. Maybe it was the lop-sided turban, maybe it was the disgruntled cobra hissing menacingly in the corner, but as I sat down heavily on the snake basket, I was sure I'd finally tracked down Remy Le Beau, circus midget and jilted lover of the now deceased ‘Fat Lady’ Doris Hanlahan.

completely irrelevant to the time period and not an original thought:

I watched a sampan make its way along the Yangtze. We’d played on one last night. Who’d have thought a sampam would be big enough for a dance floor, let alone a mirror ball. Still, it wasn’t the one I was looking for. I cursed my memory and one too many tequilas. I’d left my harp in the sampam’s disco.

I could tell the Holy Man knew something.

I saw him watching as I was leaving the chapel with it set ablaze. I couldn’t help myself any longer. By burning it to the ground, I could no longer be told the hideout is west of the chapel. Now what would it take to keep him quiet?

5th Avenue and 42nd Street... a place so familiar to me, but I still lost him once again.

How could this happen? I know every alley, every fire escape, every shortcut... still, he eluded me. Passers-by watched curiously as I pulled the Professor’s oversized black greatcoat from a trash bin. I sighed, wondering what he had worn under that coat.

I watched a sampan make its way along the Yangtze.

It had been weeks since the Professor had eluded me in New York, but I had a gut feeling I would find him here. Okay, a gut feeling based on solid information received from an ancient calligrapher. I moved in as the sampan floated closer to shore...

I could tell the Holy Man knew something.

Waiting patiently has never been my forte, but I sat quietly, hiding my inner torment. The Professor had tricked me in Shanghai, and time was running out. The Prince cared only for results. I forced my expression to remain calm as I fumed inwardly. Finally, the Holy Man spoke…

Big Ben struck 12 and the Professor turned to the door.

“I know fear will hold you back,” he said to me, “as it has all along. I should have been your prisoner weeks ago.”

I should have been angry, but instead I smiled. I knew something he didn’t.

I knew I had a gun - and planned to use it.

The howl of the train broke through the ever quiet land of Shangri La.

My compartment was silent as could be, except for the occasional muffled curse. I had chased the Professor through New York, Shanghai, Delhi, and London. But to bring him back to the Prince, I used a trick learned in Cairo. He wouldn’t get away.

I’d wrapped him like a mummy.

I could tell the Holy Man knew something.

So I bribed him. He took the money without hesitation and smiled.

Finally, another suspect! I would be able to solve this case after all.

Zail said, "No, I don't know anything about that."

I paid him to tell me that? And I thought he knew something!

omg these things are so hard. you kind of have to fill in the blank bits yourself. but I s'pose that's half the fun :D

London:

Big Ben struck 12 and the Professor turned to the door. "We'll never find him.” He said over his shoulder.

"But we can try", Desdemona replied grimly.

The Professor turned back to see his daughter slip a Derringer down the bodice of her dress. "You're not coming".

She smiled patiently, "Only one of us is capable of killing a man father."

.................

5th Avenue and 42nd Street... a place so familiar to me, but I still lost him once again.

An open doorway. The sound of footsteps. Maybe all was not lost. And then... the cold touch of a gun barrel resting between my eyes.

"You're not him", the girl said coldly. An old man behind her sat clutching his chest.

"Guess we’re even. You're not him either", I replied.

..............

Shangri La:

The howl of the train broke through the ever quiet land of Shangri La.

Scholar, Holy Man, Fakir. He was many things and went by many names.

Once, not long ago he was Yeshe, 'wise one', to his pupils. But now - for love - he was something he did not want to be - 'chi ba'.

Now... now he was 'Death'.

...............

Shanghai:

I watched a sampan make its way along the Yangtze.

The Professor swore. "Damned if he isn't waving to us, the black-hearted blighter."

Desdemona took his hand. "There'll be other chances Father." She looked back to me. "And we have help now."

I nodded.

The Professor began to speak, but was stopped short when the sampan suddenly, and inexplicably, exploded.

...............

Delhi:

I could tell the Holy Man knew something. He lead us to a small room where a man lay bandaged and burnt - a photo clutched in one hand. A family portrait. I recognised Desdemona and the Professor.

Desdemona knelt by the pallette. Praying? Crying? I couldn't tell.

The Holy Man spoke gently. “Go home. It is done.”

The howl of the train broke though the ever quiet land of Shangri La.

I was completely drained, longing for nothing more than rest and sleep. Then the message had come from the Prince. My old nemesis, Gustav vonSchneider, was back, wreaking havoc and destroying lives. I couldn’t rest now. I only hoped His Highness had some small clue as to where to begin.

Big Ben struck twelve and the Professor turned to the door.

He was unable to face me, his face haggard and ravaged with pain, his eyes filled with horror.

“Just find him, please,” he murmured, “find the man who butchered my daughter.”

I laid a comforting hand on his shoulder, unable to offer sympathetic words, and left him to his memories.

Fifth Avenue and Forty-Second Street…a place so familiar to me, but I still lost him once again.

This was my home; I walked these streets every day. One second, I had him. Our eyes met, his widening with apprehension, mine burning with rage. The next, he had disappeared into a crowd of a thousand. I broke down, then calmed. I still had one source who might help.

I could tell the Holy Man knew something.

Zail looked at me, his eyes strangely aglow. “The truth is known only to those who believe. Do you believe, child?”

I was so exhausted, so tired of searching my soul and the world, I didn’t know what I believed anymore. “I’ll try, teacher.”

“You both must walk old paths.”

I watched a sampan make its way along the Yangtze.

The lieutenant cuffed the shackles on vonSchneider; I couldn’t bear to look at his face, taking the locket fished out of Schneider’s jacket. I declined the lieutenant’s offer of a reward, grasping the locket. I was off to London. A smile on a careworn face would be my reward.

Shangri La:
The howl of the train broke through the ever quiet land of Shangri La.

I'd returned, villain in tow, expecting a fanfare, but instead was handed another mission and hurried straight back out of the Palace. The platform was empty as the train pulled in. The chill wind swirled my jacket. In one pocket, a photograph; the other, a pistol. I prepared to board.
-------------------------

New York:
5th Avenue and 42nd Street... a place so familiar to me, but I still lost him once again.

I'd almost had him too... until I awoke with a concussion and vague memories of a runaway fruit cart. Hunting the Professor was a dangerous business, but I had bills to pay and a reputation to keep. Well, debts to pay and a reputation to salvage.

Better luck next time.
-------------------------

Delhi:
I could tell the Holy Man knew something.

And it wasn't just the path to enlightenment. He looked at me with the look of a man who knew more than he wanted to. His eyes told the whole tale.

"My family..." he croaked. I nodded. Some things didn't need saying.

"London," he whispered.

Without a word, I left.
-------------------------

London:
Big Ben struck 12 and the Professor turned to the door.

Hesitating, he turned back. "The detective is close, I'll be lying low for a while." His companion nodded, eyes averted, her trepidation clear. It was time for him to get out of town.

"I'll be at the Oasis," he lied. As the door closed, he heard the sigh of relief.
-------------------------

Shanghai:
I watched a sampan make its way along the Yangtze.

It was a balmy evening, perfect for sipping mai tais on the veranda. I'd chased the Professor around the world, but now, in the care of the Prince's men, he couldn't run any more.

"Waiter!" I called, leaning back and putting my feet up. Shangri La could wait till tomorrow.
