So, I have to go to Melbourne next weekend (not by choice, although I have never been so it's not the city that I disagree with...)

I was wondering how many Aussies we have currently active and can anyone give me the low down? And I don't mean "NO, don't go to Melbourne!"

Where's the place to be and be seen? Best chow? Best beer? Most important, best talent?! :P

Okay - I'm not trying to start a whole Olympic torch politricks thing here, but I do want to say this:

Melbourne rocks. I know this even though I haven't ever been there. It was the host city for the 1956 Olympics, and as such was the site for maybe the best Olympic torch disruption ever. Flawlessly executing what might just be the best swap ever, the guy posing as an athlete managed to pass the runner a flaming pair of underpants on a stick. And that runner ran with his flaming pants kebab for quite a little while before anyone figured it out.

Hooray for Aussie humour!

We have a number of sleuths from there. Go for at least 10 meat pies. (The only thing I eat when I got Australia) stay away from the vegimite, and be ready to get close and personal with every part of a kangaroo's body (NO JOKE!)

oh yea... you have to go to a footy match... yell ball when everyone else does (lots of my friends do this for fun without knowing what it means), and eat a meat pie with sauce (or if you're vego like me... eat hot chips)!!!

That's a very important part of melbournian culture!!!

Aussies and NZ's can't be vegetarian! It's against their genetic code!

LOL!

Thanks for the suggestions red lips. The markets and southbank sounds good, I'll have a wander round, I'm not into footie (more into watersports but it's not really the right time of year I think!) besides I'm only in town for a few days, but I'll try the meat pie (?!?!).

Anyone got any more suggestions?

Don't worry topkebab Aussies are as tough as nails you tell them to play and they WILL pay.

bloody hell i was in Melbourne last Saturday to see Spamalot. at 9.30an I expected to see a tumbleweed blow down Burke Street. It must be one of the least populated Urban Centres in the world I reckon. Mind you by 2pm with 2 footy matches, the state garden show, comedy festival, theatre and *gags a little* Highs School Musical on Ice (don't laugh I came down on the train with about 50 mothers and daughters *shudder*) it was bedlam.

Basically Melbourne, the city, really isn't that big. The 'burbs sprawl, but the city is quite small. Do you like sport? There's always plenty of that in Melbourne. Not everyone's cup of tea.

Theres a Melbourne Central tram. It's free. Just does a loop of the city. But you can buy a map (maybe even a headset?) for it and it gives you an outline of what's what in the city. (goes past the Market Red Lips mentioned)

And yeah Red Lips is right. Southbank is as good a place as any. Lygon Street is good for food and coffee etc

lol the Zoo is good :) I love the zoo. And the aquarium is good.

In the evening there's a tramcar restaurant that'd be worth doing. You get a good look at Melbourne at night.

Or there's a cruising restaurant on the Yarra river. I think the boat is called the Spirit of Melbourne.

Hmmm Fairy Penguins at Philip Island (its not that cold or wet yet so this would be ok)? Look it up on the net. It's kinda neat.

Other than that, just the usual things. Guys and Dolls is on. That's getting good reviews. But you could go anywhere and see that I suppose, and not particualry 'Australian' either lol.

There are other things further away, but you only have a few days so I won't overload you with info.

If I say "I don't believe in fairy penguins", will a penguin fall over and die?

OK, I looked them up. Cute!

Well Top, my only suggestion would be NOT to buy any meat pies from a guy named Dibbler. And don't even consider the ratonnastick, even with ketchup.

Ermm, thanks Anikka.

I think.

;)

And thanks PA too. The central tram sounds interesting. Is it a hop-on-hop-off type of thing?
