Roamie asked--

Will the New sleuth effect the old sleuth in terms of game speed? Old Sleuth is running SLOW everyday. From about 6:50 AM CST until around 6:00 PM CST. And by slow I mean so slow that I can't even play because it takes so long to load each screen. If the game is running this slow now, will it even be able to run when the New Sleuth is online?

And Ben our wonderful Adminastrator answered--

Hi All,

I'm very sorry for the slowness of the Noir servers. I'll be doing some cleanup work tonight which will speed things up.

I do monitor the average page load speed and take maintenance action on a regular basis to keep things playable and we are a bit overdue for that work.

The speed of Sleuth Noir does not have anything to do with Shades of Mystery being in beta testing, other than the fact that the beta testing and development of SoM is sucking a lot of my time up right now. The two do not share any hardware resources at all. In fact they are going to be hosted on entirely different networks.

I do agree with Stooby and Roamie's point that current Sleuth Noir paying customers ought to be the priority, so we should do a better job of providing the level of service people are paying for.

I think the post was deleted due to a little squabble that would not die down. Maybe a new post will help calm that a little as there's no history of it!

All us (at least more than only me I think) who are addicted to Sleuth, are from time to time frustrated about the game speed of the Sleuth Noir.

This might not be the right place to discuss the problem, as this board is about Shades of Mystery, but when someone opens the door, the discussion begins.

I also think most of us agree in the confidence and thankfulness about the work Ben, our Sleuth Admin, does to improve the speed. But, it does not stop me from being frustrated about the speed. I am not angry with Ben, and I don't want to hit him, I am just frustrated about the speed of the game I have become addicted to.

Also, I think that I have the right to say this without being accused for sharing my frustration.

Sometimes I ask myself if there are things that I could do to contribute to the improvement of speed.?

I know that one way are making multiple subscriptions, but there are limits to how many sleuths it's worth wile to subscribe. - the game speed taken into account. (I now have 5+ sleuths that are subscribed)

Then I ask if there would be possible to buy some kind of "gold membership" or "gold characters", that got some advantages due to a higher prize, in order to improve the money flow in, in the hope that this would lead to improved game speed. But in the different ways I have presented that question, it's either been judged down by the community, or not been responded to by our Admin.

The last thing I have thought about, since I am a programmer of heart, are if I could contribute with my programming skills in order to help improvement of the game speed. It's true I've got some ideas, but I don't even know if my involvement (for free) would be apreciated? Also, even though I am a trained programmer, I am not trained in the languages and setup that the Sleuth server are done with...

So, in the end, I am still frustrated about the game speed. And, I don't think I ought to be ashamed about being frustrated.

Hi all,

We did another round of old data cleanup tonight, which should help the speed more. This has been a periodic problem for Sleuth Noir for a long time. The root of the problem is that Sleuth needs keeps a lot of old data around, messages, mystery records, traffic data, etc. All that old data gets in the way of more recent stuff and makes every page load take a bit longer. We can selectively prune a lot of that data, but it's sometimes tough to know what needs to be saved and what can be safely erased.

So, beating back the monster of server lag is sort of a never-ending battle, at least the way Sleuth Noir is currently architected. Shades of Mystery was built from the ground up to avoid a lot of those problems, so I'm hoping it will not be as noticeable there. We'll make another effort at a permanent solution for Sleuth Noir after the launch of Shades of Mystery

In the meantime, I hope this most recent cleanup has helped the situation. I'll be keeping an eye on performance data to see if more work needs to be done.

Have you realized it?
The game speed are completely different after the Shades of Mystery open beta testing started.....
- because "everyone" are away playing with SoM... ;-)
And we who are left can have much more fun than we have had in a long period. A great achievement!
This seem to be the best cure we have had on the game speed!

I am really sorry Ben, that I was accusing you for forgetting Noir, while what you have done are taking away most of the users, giving us a great Noir with decent game speed. Thank you very much! I am so sorry, I did not foresee this consequence...

Finally I do agree with you: Shades of Mystery are a great game!
- even for me who love Noir.

Roamie: Now you don't have to quit because of game speed frustration anymore. We have been given a completely different Noir where it's fun playing cases again! Try it! :-)
