Maybe next time post in newbies, this is the first place where people will check for the same question.
You won't need research any more then in a normal game. The featured mystery is a different game. You got to play close attention to what is written. And you really have different questions and answers, which gives you leads as to who you need to talk to, and who has done it. Try it. A false accusation, won't go on your record.

Also I might wait a while to play the featured mysteries. I couldn't get through them early on when I was playing, and even when I had a lot of experience and went back, I found myself having to guess more than I liked at the end. I think the levels are harder than they are listed as, and I also think you do need a different strategy, as townspeople and suspects give you information that is involved in the story, and you are not able to get other information before you have it sometimes, unlike the random cases. But, as jstkdn says, a false accusation will not go against you on a featured case, and you can play it again and again until you get it. It does use up one of your daily cases, however, each time you play one.
