there should be an ocean liner that one could get on ( a substitute for a city ) and one could solve a mystery around the ship ( the grand salon, the kitchen, the boiler room, the cabin, etc. ) and a computer game of 21 could be in the grand salon. one could stay on the ship to solve mysteries but the ship would not have any treasure hunts and one could not buy an apartment on the ship. from time to time the ship would dock in shainghai, and everybody would be kicked off the ship and find themselves in shaingahi..the ship would stay in shainghai for say 3 days and fill up again ( perhaps a limit of 20 players only ) and then sail off so to speak to arrive in london two weeks later..then everybody would get kicked off and one could get back on to be the next 20...the deal is when the ship leaves port you do not know to which city it will travel next..you
take your chances and every two weeks it kicks you off...perhaps one could limit 20 players from always staying on the ship by either charging a higher and higher fee to get on if you kept getting on all the time to stay on the ship or perhaps the computer would just let the first 20 on or perhaps the computer would take the last 20 who just got off and not allow them to get back on in the next 3 days at all....it could be called "the sleuthetania"...

I want to simplify the idea a bit so we can have something that we could potentially do in the next few months without being a serious draw away from Shades of Mystery. We can add other stuff like specialized skills later.

And how about...

1 Ocean Liner "The Sleuthetannia" - Travels back and forth between New York and Shanghai.

1 Train "Name?" - Travels back and forth between London and Delhi (yeah, I know, no chunnel)

In addition to individual mysteries, what kind of hunts would you like to see?

I like the idea of timed quests. Either timmed AV Hunts or Squirrels double or nothing idea.

Lots of potential for development. Like we said new skills needed, new contacts on the ship.

The fact that it is on a ship could see a murder take plac and you need to catch the murderer before the ship docks as otherwise all disembark. And new ship related intros etc.

And what about (not sure if this can be done) other crimes like thefts?

Maybe Sleuthville Express? Or Sleuthville Belle? Or Flying Sleuth? I did my homework on famous trains and found out that there was a Rheingold Express between Holland and Switzerland in the twenties, how about Ringold Express? :D

Maybe we could have individual hunts on the train (AV hunts or something new) and team hunts on the ship, with ad-hoc teams of detectives formed after we board.

I suppose there will be a time limit for both, depending on the kind of hunts.

Maybe a new kind of AV hunt, one unrelated to the Prince and Shangri-La. One given by the Captain and limited in both the travel (would only take place on the ship) and the time (must be completed before the ship docks, so what... 2 days?).

Perhaps the reward would be cash, or there could be a small selection of item rewards that can later be used to obtain ship-specific skills (if they are put in at a later time). Or even, maybe a mixture of both; sometimes you get a Wad O' Cash, sometimes you get an item.

I like the idea in norges post with a sign-up sheet. But I think there should be one on both ends for the relevant direction.
You should also get crossed off the list if you leave the city before you board the vessel.

For simplicities sake I think that anyone on the list that isn't online automatically get boarded at departure and those both online and on the list get a automated PM to board before the boat leaves. PM should probably include departure time.
This allows you to get you affairs in order and still give a sense of urgency.

Alternately, the ship and the train can stay in one city for 24 hours and you have to board during that time to be on it. (The last might be easier to program) Then it could travel 60 hours to it's destination and dump people there at arrival/when they've finnished their current case.

You could then get:
24 hours boarding in London, Mon
60 hours travel London ->Delphi, Tue Wes 1/2 Thu
24 boarding Delphi, 1/2 Thu 1/2 Fri
60 hours travel Delphi -> London 1/2 Fri Sat Sun

With departure and arrivals at noon or midnight as appropriate.

Hmmm... Flying Sleuth makes me think of a rigid dirigble.

And there are two cities left.
Cairo and Shanghai.

Cairo and dirigibles makes me think of air pirates and fantasy...
Now I know I'm completely off track. ^_^')

How about a second way to travel to the same destinations. As is, we spend $2000 -$4000 to get from city to city in an instant. My proposal is to pay half as much money for a 3 day trip. During those three days, your case count is unlimited. You can solve as many cases as you wish. There is no access to agency perks, no case files, no crime lab, no agency message boards. Perhaps no community message boards either (like Shangri La). You must do each of those cases on your own. This would give the person who wants to build up their detective a way to do so while traveling to another city. We would still need the instant travel at a higher cost for treasure hunting and for those who do not want to spend three days with no other site access. Add in special contacts for ship or train and I think there would be many people opting for a three days travel for unlimited case work.

Perhaps later there can be a third option. Travel at full price, and you can solve special mysteries, perhaps team oriented ones. Team people up like in the AVL, make them solve mysteries, and the first team to all complete the series, gets double their travel money as an reward.

I'm rather curious why Cairo and Shangri-La are being left out as potential departure/arrival cities. People have been asking for more options for both cities for a while now. How bout having Cairo as a potential destination of the Ship and Shangri-La a destination of the train? I would think that using these cities could lead to all sorts of interesting expansion stuff, and you wouldn't need to worry about opening up a new city or taking away from Shades of Mystery.

I'm also somewhat curious why both ship and train trips are only being allowed one destination. Yes, it would complicate the programming stuff. But I like the idea of a New York-Shanghai-Cairo ship and a London-Delhi-Shangri-La train. Or interchange them. Whichever. ;-)
