No, it's also used for quite a variety of other things. You can use it to buy items, but really it's a better idea to get items from doing favours. You can also use money to bribe people to talk, to buy special items in New York, to see Big Lucy's Cabaret, and if you subscribe, there are a whole wagon-load of other things you can do with your money. Betting even! Woo-hoo!
I think this is the third time now that I'm asking you to have a look at all the other newbie questions, particularly the 'Welcome Newbies' thread. Seriously, if you like it here, you'll like it much more after reading that stuff.
