Back upstairs, Dave was met at his Office by Annie diNapoli, a fellow intelligence officer. She handed him two reports and a telegram, “These came in while you were downstairs.” She pointed to the telegram, “Lou’s down in D.C. today, so you get to deal with this.”

Dave nodded as he quickly scanned the decoded message from England, then swore softly under his breath.

Annie glanced at the notepad in her hand, “I’ve already assigned two teams to try and track her down through the usual entry points into New York. Nothing yet.”

Dave nodded, “Okay, thank you. Let’s get two more teams out and start coming hotels again. She’s gotta be staying somewhere, and we know she tends to like the ritzier places, so let’s have ‘em start there.”

Annie scribbled a note down on her pad. “Will do. The top report’s from our hospital on Sahira’s assassin. Seems the guy’s finally conscious and stable. He should be able to be interrogated anytime we want to talk to him. The second’s the daily briefing.” She handed him a third file, “This also came for you from Mercy Hospital.”

Dave nodded at that, then glanced through the second medical report, “Holy….!” He looked at Annie for a second, stunned, then looked back at the report.

“What is it?” she asked anxiously.

Dave reached for his briefcase and began throwing various files and reports into it that had been scattered about on his desk. He tossed the medical report on top and banged it shut. “Who’s on duty escorting Breit?” he asked Annie curtly.

Her eyes widened at his abruptness, “Will’s on guard with her, but Todd just called in from the Plaza. She just came in there about fifteen minutes ago. She should still be there.”

“Good,” Dave replied, “Get on the horn. Don’t let her leave. I’ll be at the Plaza if anyone needs me.” He headed for the door.

“Dave!” Annie yelled after him, “What’s wrong, fer Pete’s sake?!”

“The rabbit died,” he called over his shoulder as he entered the elevator.

A delighted feminine shriek echoed down the hallway....

On the Northern Edge of New York City

The Pfeiffer Estate

Breit and Dave's Cottage, the former Carriage House of the Manor

Dave hung up the phone and rubbed his hand over his face wearily. He looked over to find Breit watching him sleepily.

"That was Barry?" she asked, yawning.

"Yep," he replied, "Omega forwarded his call here. He thinks his friend Rebecca Franks is in trouble. He was s'pposed to meet up with her at the Tricky Mister, and apparently, she left with somebody. He's worried about her. I'm goin' to meet him now."

Breit sat up quickly, all traces of drowsiness vanished, "Is this the blonde that tried to sneak in to see him at the hospital?"

Dave nodded as he tugged on his pants, "I think so, yes."

Breit threw back the covers and reached for her dress.

Dave eyed her warily, "What're you doin'?"

Breit looked back at him, smiling slightly as she buttoned up the placket on her shirtwaist, "I'm gettin' dressed so you can drop me off at Omega on your way to meet Barry."

Dave skipped his tie, and picked up his jacket, "Okayyy...but you don't need to wait up for me, y'know."

Breit smiled at him again, "I know, Cher, but that woman's a hustler and a floozy, and the only person she's looking out for is number one. I doubt she even gives much of a damn about Barry. I may just get in your way, but there's no way in God's Green Hell I'm waitin' on the sidelines while she gets more of our people killed. I'll go work at Omega, and you'll be able to go do what you need to do."

Dave watched her for a moment, then helped her into her coat, "Okay, Brie, but please don't be up all night. You will try and get some sleep, yes?"

Breit finished strapping on the small pistol to her left thigh, and lowered her skirt over her legs. She smiled up at him, kissing him gently, "When I get tired, I'll go back to sleep in the Apartment, I promise."

He kissed her back, relishing her instant response like always. He'd go to his grave adoring her.

Together, they set off for Downtown....

The cab carrying Barry and Andrea came to a stop in front of a dilapidated building. They exited the car, Andrea fixing her dress and Barry squaring the hat on his head, and took a look around.

They met up with some of Dave's boys who told them that the building was empty. Undeterred and taking Andrea by the hand, Barry headed up 12th Avenue to the next warehouse on the list.

Barry and Andrea arrived at the warehouse that was located right on the water. They spotted more of Dave's boys who were scurrying about a little more agitated than those at the first location. Barry approached one of them, "What's going on?"

The man Barry was speaking to was highly agitated and a bit distracted. He barely looked at Barry when he answered, "There seems to be evidence of a hasty departure. We're checking the entire building to make sure we don't miss anything."

This news seemed to worry Barry. "Can you tell how long it's been since they were here? We can't lose any more time."

"Well, there are cigarettes still smoking in ash trays with very long ashes. We're estimating about 20 minutes."

Barry had to ask, "Can you tell which way they went?"

The man gave him 2 possible directions. Either more north or directly east. The northern location was closer so Barry and Andrea headed that way.

Barry took Andrea's hand again. The night was starting to take it's toll on him. He was very tired and looked it. It concerned Andrea. "Barry? Are you sure you don't want to leave it up to those agents? You haven't slept all night and we've been running around like crazy. You look more than tired."

Barry put his arm around Andea. "Sweetheart, I am tired but I wouldn't be able to rest or sleep even if I tried." He took her hand and brought it up to his lips and kissed it. "I'll be OK. Especially since you're here." He smiled for her, squeezed her a bit, and picked up the pace.

Barry was running on pure adrenaline. The truth was, he was exhausted and wasn't sure how much strength he was going to have when they finally confronted Jake's crew. But the memory of the time he spent with them only made him worry about Becky even more. As they were racing to the northern warehouse, Barry stumbled, almost imperceptibly, due to his fatigue. He covered it by tightening his arm around Andrea. She looked at him with distinct worry on her face. He said, "Don't worry, I'm fine."

They arrived at the abandoned warehouse and spotted more of Dave's men. This time, however, not as many. "Find anything?"

The nearest agent to Barry answered him. "Nope. It looks like they abandoned this place awhile ago. Can't find a thing." This news was not good to hear. The longer it took to find her, the more danger she was in.

Barry didn't even say "Thanks" when he turned, grabbed Andrea's hand, and started running back to the building that was east of the second place. He was unaware of the burning sensation in his thighs while he was running.

Andrea was starting to get pretty worried. She knew Barry was determined, but she never expected to see it applied to an old girlfriend. A little tingle of jealousy started forming but she shrugged it off due to the fact that Barry hasn't seemed to let go of her since they left Dave's office. She felt pretty good about that.

They finally arrived at the abandoned office building that was east of the 2nd location. Dave's agents were already surrounding the place because they could tell the building wasn't completely abandoned.

Three agents covered every entrance to the building. Another four covered the service entrance. The report from the agent Barry spoke to was that someone was being held on the ground floor in a back office. As soon as they realized that this was the place, they called in Breit's pets. A red panda and a Bengal tiger. Missy, the tiger, had been trained to attack on command, and Xing Yun, or "Foxy" as Breitkat affectionately referred to him, had not been trained to do anything too extraordinary. Just the presence of a rare animal such as the red panda was enough to attract attention.

Smith Parker, the lead agent, motioned to another group of men to follow him. Barry saw that and stopped him. "Excuse me, I know the woman they're holding. I would like to help in some way." Smith knew the background to the case and asked Barry, "Are you Grant?"

Barry nodded and Parker indicated to Barry to join them. They took Foxy and slipped him in through the window of the office next to the one with Becky in it. Foxy received his hand signal instructions, mostly a "shooing" motion, and trotted off to the adjoining office. Meanwhile, Missy was being led to the far side of the building so she could be slipped in through another window. After her leash was removed, one of the agents signaled to her what he wanted her to do.

Foxy managed to start a bit of commotion. Barry could hear members of the Winter Hill gang react with astonishment to the appearance of Foxy. He heard accusations being bandied about but no solution to their problem.

All of a sudden he heard screaming from deep within the building and yells of "Help!" He then heard Missy's roar. He watched the 2 men with the panda take one look at each other and headed out to see what was going on. Barry could not believe it. The two numbskulls watching Becky didn't have the foresight of keeping one of them behind. He thanked this stroke of luck and followed Parker into the office.

Parker and his men went to follow the two numbskulls so they could round up the lot in one shot. Barry headed straight for Becky who was gagged and tied to a chair. He quickly removed her gag and she started to speak. "Don't say a word." Barry whispered to her sternly. He untied her hands from behind the chair and untied each of her legs. He helped her to stand up and scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the window.

At the window, another agent was there to take her. After Becky went through the window, Barry followed. She was taken away from the building and placed in an armored van. They started asking her questions, the first being, "How many are there?"

Becky was trying to remember how many she saw but she wanted one thing first. "Where's Barry?"

"I'm right here, sweetie." Barry had been holding her hand but she didn't realize it. "Please try to answer these questions. It would be a tremendous help."

At the sight of him, Becky began to cry. "I'm not sure. I only saw five but I got the impression there were eight because of the conversations I overheard." She hung her head in exhaustion.

"That's OK, honey. We'll get you out of here now." Barry turned to the agents questioning her. "She's been through hell. She needs to get out of here."

Parker said, "We need this information if we're going to make this sting worthwhile." Turning to Becky he said, "Were there any visitors to the place? Is this the only place they took you? Can you remember being anywhere else?"

Becky's reaction was more crying. She was so upset she started to shake. Barry could not stand it. "Look, she said there are eight in there. Start with that then we'll get the rest of the information from her when she's calmer. She'll remember more that way."

Against his better judgement, Parker said. "OK. But she'll need to speak to Dave as soon as possible." Parker exited the van and banged on the back of it to indicate to the driver he could leave. After watching the van pull away, he turned to take care of the rest of the business and almost bumped into Andrea. Barry seemed to have forgotten about her as soon as he saw Becky.

The look on her face said it all.
