I think it would be really cool if each Townie in every city had a bio. There are so many talented citizens of Sleuthville that I thnk it would be interesting to see what we as a community can come up with for our favorite Townies.

I am posting below my bio for Samantha Brown, Librarian, Imperial Library in London.

Gossip: Moonlights as a striptease artist at Big Lucy’s Cabaret

Samantha Brown appeared behind the ancient mahogany counter of the Imperial Library in London one morning 3 years ago. Many have speculated as to where she came from and how she achieved this prestigious position, but none have been able to probe behind the solid curtain wall that divides her present from her past.

When not behind the library counter, she roams the aisles of books peering sternly at the patrons over the top of her thick, black rimmed glasses, discouraging any idle chit-chat that may be ensuing. Her black, sensible, patent-leather shoes make no sound as she makes her rounds, straightening books on shelves, shushing whispering, giggling students, and scraping gum off the bottom of the study tables. Back behind the library counter, a raised brow or studied frown sends her subordinates scurrying off to find something to keep themselves busy.

However, there has been of late wild speculation that Ms. Brown has been seen in the company of none other than The Shady Character himself. Sources who wish to remain anonymous have reported seeing Shady and Ms. Brown exchanging packages in the back booth of the Owl and Walnut. These packages may have something to do with artifacts that have gone missing from the British Museum. It is suspected that these artifacts are being smuggled out of the country in books from the Imperial Library. (Come on, did you really think you were getting paid $100 to deliver a BOOK?)

One last salacious bit of “back-fence talk” is that there is, in the back room of Big Lucy’s Cabaret, a floor show where a striptease artist who looks suspiciously like Ms. Brown minus the granny glasses and shoes warms the “hearts” of men. Evidently the cover charge to get in is outrageously high, and only a select few have glimpsed this wanton Samantha Brown doppelganger (perhaps explaining Shady’s exorbitant rates), so for the moment her true identity is a mystery. But, the next time you visit the Imperial Library in London, you may find yourself looking a little more closely at Ms. Brown than you did before.

Gossip: sleeps with a teddybear every night


Perhaps his greatest strength is that you don’t seem to notice him until he makes his move. Once a bouncer this Shady character carefully worked his way up in the world of nightlife and entertainment. In the days of the prohibition he knew very well huge profits could be made by selling illicit booze and he started with a modest speakeasy. As little as this place was it became an unseen success in no time. The moment was ripe to see things a little bigger so he opened a stylish night club named “The Dark Lotus”. Name any vice you’re looking for and you can find it over there going from floorshows and booze over illegal gambling and organizing clandestine fights.

His shady activities manoeuvred him in a unique position as outstanding members of both the underworld as the upper world found each other in their mutual weaknesses. His temple of sin thus became a stock exchange for valuable tidbits of information of which he knew well when the poper time was there to make good use of it. If you wanted to get something done, Shady was the guy.....for the right price of course. His ability to pull the strings gave him the unofficial title of “night mayor”, despite his reluctance towards publicity. The dark side of his shady fame was that for too many it would be convenient to see him end up in the cold water of the river with a stone around his neck. A silent and cruel death that would have been fitting for his lifestyle.

Being quite anonymous, Shady gave reason enough for all kinds of rumours being spread around. Some people say his face got scarred after a vicious fight with a broken bottle in his days as a bouncer. Others claim he got hit by a scrapnel of a grenade when he was a young soldier in The Great War. Despite Shady’s occupation, his love life can be compared with that of a monk. It is a deep hidden secret that his only companion to spend his nights with is his teddybear. The teddybear his mom had bought before she gave birth to him, which was the last thing she ever did.
