NEW YORK (Reuters) - Police investigators believe they have discovered the whereabouts of missing detective, Barry Grant. Grant was reported missing three days about by a friend of his, Rebecca Franks. "I was supposed to meet him at Big Lucy's that night but he never showed."

Grant, Global Sleuth Syndicate Ambassador from Shanghai, had been working at the Blue Pagoda Agency on a Good Will mission at the time of his disappearance. "He was becoming a much relied upon detective." Lady jasNmushu, a Director at Blue Pagoda Agency, said of the missing detective.

Police have reason to believe that Grant was abducted by operatives from HYDRA while on his way to Big Lucy's. "I was meeting him at the corner of Eleventh Avenue and 42nd Street that night." recounted a teary-eyed divorcee Mrs. Franks. "He never showed."

Chief Inspector James Mulligan was able to determine the last place Grant was seen. "Cyrus Tibby recalls serving Mr. Grant a Tom Collins around 7 pm that night. After that, Mr. Grant left the premises and that was the last anyone had seen of him."

This reporter secured an interview with the elusive Larry the Toe. "I don't know anything about that." was his response to all my questions.

There was a break in the investigation when a shady character finally stepped forward to reveal he saw a tall man with a hat being forced into a car. This shady character, who prefers to remain anonymous, was unable to make out the license plate number but he recognized the car and the man doing the abducting. "I've seen that happen before. Same guy. Same car."

Policed will not disclose any more details for fear it could put Mr. Grant's life in jeopardy. Chief Inspector Mulligan's final word: "We don't want to lose any more detectives to that fiendish group."

Relaxing in his NYC hotel suite after a hard day of questioning townspeople about the whereabouts of Professor Letitia Stone, Hawkeye picks up the Times and begins scanning the news stories and classifieds for anything interesting...suddenly, he is riveted by the story of a detective who was allegedly abducted by operatives of the evil organization known as HYDRA.

"Barry Grant", Hawk muses, "I know him...he is a very proficient detective, and has excellent manners..."

Although he is hot on the trail of an Arch Villain, Hawkeye knows that he must also be on the lookout for Mr. Grant and offer any assistance that may be needed. However, he believes that Mr. Grant will prevail, as he is one of the smartest and most charming detectives that Hawk has encountered in Sleuthville.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Barry Grant, the detective who has been missing for the past several days, turned up at police headquarters at 3:37 a.m. this morning. Chief Inspector James Mulligan reports that Grant arrived beaten, bloody, and barely able to stand. After identifying himself, Grant was immediately taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.

Inspector Mulligan would not say anything except that Mr. Grant kept repeating 'kernwassa' when he arrived. "We're trying to find a German translator to tell us what that is."

This reporter attempted to get an interview with Mr. Grant at the hospital but no one but family is permitted to see him right now. The Chief of Staff assured me that Mr. Grant is resting comfortably and that he needs time to heal.

The police are refusing to release any more information at this time due to the nature of the investigation and the welfare of the people involved.

Relief washed over her when she read the article. At least he was alive.

She dashed off to the docks to see if she could book passage on the next boat to New York.

Editorial Correction
Ia previous article a word was misspelled. The proper spelling is 'kernwaffe'. We regret the error.

Editor's Note: 'kernwaffe' translates from German as 'nuclear weapons'.

Breit looked aimlessly out the hospital window at the street window, sighing tiredly to herself. She glanced over at the man sleeping deeply in the bed beside her. He'd been unconscious for the last twelve hours, ever since he'd been brought here. His face was barely recognizable as the handsome man she'd known. Breit rested her head in her hands, sighing quietly again.
A soft groan from the bed brought her out of her reverie. She looked up to find one brown eye barely open, looking at her. "Where am I?" a rusty voice groaned." Breit smiled with relief, "Welcome back, stranger." She stood up slowly, stretching aching muscles, then came to stand beside Barry, touching his cheek softly. "It's okay. Barry. You're safe now."
He looked around the room, confused, "They said I was at Sinai. This doesn't look like Sinai to me." Breit smiled at him again to reassure him, "It's okay, Barry. You're not at Mount Sinai. We have you at a different hospital, where it's safer." He looked around wildly again, panic showing on his face, "Where'm I?" Breit cupped his face gently, trying to avoid the bruises and cuts covering most of his face. She crooned to him, "Easy, Barry. I'm gonna tell you exactly what's going on, but you need to relax, okay? Just breathe. Nice and easy." She waited for him to calm slightly, then continued, speaking softly, "You're at a secret hospital that's run by the War Department. We brought you here so we could protect you. No one knows you're here, and no one's going to find you. We have people all over the place on guard. Please believe me, you're safe."
He seemed to relax somewhat at this, though still confused. "I thought the news was saying that I was at Sinai. How can I be here?" Breit smiled slightly, "Well, I don't always give the public 'the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me', especially when someone's safety is at stake. What the rest of the world doesn't know won't hurt them."

She winked at him gently, then sobered slightly. "Do you remember what happened to you at all, Barry?" He looked at her with his good eye, closed it briefly, remembering, then nodded slightly. "A little, he croaked hoarsely. "They had me in some kind of warehouse. One of them got a phone call. The next thing I knew, another one was pointing a gun at me and..." He paused, trying to remember, "...and, and, and then Lady Jas came out of nowhere just as the gun went off and threw something at the shooter." His eye widened, bolted upright in bed, and his closest hand gripped Breit's in an iron grasp. "Where's Jas? What happened to her? Where is she?"
Breit eased him back down again, humming gently, "Easy, honey. She's okay. We found her in time. She's up in surgery right now. Trust me, she's alive." He looked up at her, disbelief plain on his face, "You're sure?" Breit leaned down and let him see her sincerity, "I'm serious, Barry. They're working on her now. She'll be fine."
Breit didn't bother telling him that Jas had been in surgery for the past twelve hours, while he'd been unconscious. He was on the edge enough mentally as it was. She gently stroked his hand, speaking softly again, "When Dave and I got to you at Police Headquarters, the Inspector said that you had said something to him before you passed out. Do you remember that?" He nodded slightly, blinking tiredly. Breit smiled, "That's good, Barry. He said it sounded like 'corn-wassa'. Does that sound familiar?" she asked softly. Barry nodded again, looking at her, "Kern-vaffa. Those goons kept beating me, wanting to know about something named 'kern-vaffa'. I kept telling 'em I had no idea what they were talking about, but they didn't believe me. They just kept hitting me." Breit rubbed his hand comfortingly. "I know, Barry. I'm sorry. But thank you for telling me. I know it wasn't easy."

She looked up at a soft knock at the door to find her husband, Dave, standing there wearily in surgical scrubs, a medical chart in his hand. He smiled tiredly at Breit, his love for her deep in his eyes though. He looked over at Barry from her, and came into the room. "So, you decided to wake up, huh? Welcome back."
Barry turned his head, saw Dave, and tried to come bolt upright again. "Where's Lady Jas? Is she all right?" Dave rushed to his bed and pushed him back down, not quite as gently as Breit had done before. "Dammit, Grant, don't DO that! You're gonna rip your stitches, and I'm gonna hafta sew you back up. Again! Now lie back down and stay there!" Breit took Barry's hand again as Dave fished his stethoscope out of his lab coat pocket. "How is she?" she asked worriedly. Dave glanced at her and shook his head slightly as he hooked the scope around his shoulders. "She's doing as well as can be expected. I just got through got through with her chest wound a few minutes ago. The orthopedic guys are dealing with her shoulder now. The bullet went in just under her collarbone, slightly nicked an artery, and lodged in the head of her humerus, or her shoulderbone. It pretty much shattered everything around it. She's lost a lot of blood, and had some artery and nerve damage. They're working to repair the last of the damage to her shoulder now. If she makes it through the next twenty-four hours or so, she'll be fine. Until then, it's touch-and-go. He looked at both of them, his face grey with fatigue and eyes deep with sympathy. Breit nodded at him, realizing her fears had been well-founded. Barry groaned and closed his eye.
He turned to Barry, "Now, let's talk about you." He glanced through the chart. "You're lucky to be alive too. Looks like they worked you over pretty good. Fractured right orbital bone, multiple broken ribs, possible internal injuries including a bruised spleen, broken left wrist, and more contusions, abrasions, and lacerations than I can count.

"You're gonna be a hurtin' man for quite a while. Don't expect to be walking around for a couple of days or so. And your chest is gonna hurt like a sonofagun for about a month. We've got you on painkillers now, so you don't feel it much, but it'll kick in if you keep moving around a lot, so knock it off and lie still." He adjusted the stethoscope and listened to Barry's chest for a bit, then gently tested his eyes. "Your lungs are clear so far, which is a good sign, and there's no indication of concussion. We're gonna keep you here in the Intensive Care Unit for a couple of days and monitor you, just to be careful." Dave probed Barry's wrist gently, "You having any pain yet?" Barry winced a little, "I'm starting to feel it, yeah." Dave nodded, "Okay, I'll get you another shot in a minute." He looked over at Breit, "I need to borrow my bride for a minute, if you don't mind." She nodded, and patted Barry's hand again, "I'll be right back. Just rest, okay?"
As Dave held the door open for Breit, he glanced back over his shoulder, "I'll be back in a minute with a shot for you. In the meantime, don't go off and run any marathons, okay?" Barry smiled slightly, then winced again in pain.
Once outside the room, Dave held Breit close as she began to cry. "How bad is Jas?" she whispered?" Dave sighed, his lips caressing her temple, "Like I told Barry, she's touch and go. They're both damned lucky to be alive right now." He kissed her forehead tenderly, "I'm sorry, sweetheart. We've done all we can. It's up to God now." She raised her face to his, and kissed him back, "Thank you, love."
They held each other for several minutes, ignoring the quiet bustle of the hospital and guards all around them. Finally, Breit looked up at him again. "I talked to Barry while you were upstairs. He remembers some of what happened to him. Apparently, they were interrogating him about the word 'kernwaffe'." Dave looked at her, puzzled, "Kernwaffe? Is that German?"
