Toughness vs Charm and stats

I've been speculating about this one lately and couldn't find a good topic to add my question to so here goes.

When viewing Judge of Character and opting for either ex. Interrogation or Sweet Talking, is the likelihood of success of the one chosen based on just the total stats (advanced skill adjustment, item bonus, etc.) on that single skill itself set against some randomly generated chance number/variable, or does it take the opposing skill total into account as well?

I've been leaning towards the latter and therefore haven't gotten Pugilism, because I was worried that adding that to my tough qualities would affect my charm adjustment negatively and lower the chance of a successfull outcome. But I'm not sure this is actually right and wonder if I've actually just decreased my tough chances by not having it?

I had sort of been wondering about that too, so I took this as a golden opportunity to test it.

I asked a suspect for motive, did a judge of character and got this:

Base Interrogation Chance: 42
Tough Equipment Adjustment: 22
Advanced Skill Bonus: 35
Pugilism Bonus: 10
Adjusted Interrogation Chance: 109

Base Sweet Talking Chance: 29
Charming Equipment Adjustment: -7
Adjusted Sweet Talking Chance: 22

Left, bit the bullet and bought flirting, tried it again and got this:

Base Interrogation Chance: 42
Tough Equipment Adjustment: 22
Advanced Skill Bonus: 35
Pugilism Bonus: 10
Adjusted Interrogation Chance: 109

Base Sweet Talking Chance: 29
Charming Equipment Adjustment: -7
Flirting Bonus: 20
Adjusted Sweet Talking Chance: 42

The tough numbers stayed the same - looks like you can look forward to many happy years of pugilizing suckas!

Yeah, pugilism positively effects your tough test chances, and flirting positively adjusts your charm tests. Neither lowers your chances for any tests.

Also, anytime test percentages are discussed in a thread, I feel obligated to mention this:

Higher test percentages improves your chance of getting an exceptional test result (i.e., more than one additional question). So, higher numbers are always better, even if both your tough and charm chances are over 100%.

Yep, that is what I was try to get at although I'm having trouble phrasing right :)

So the percentage is still calculated individually when opting for one of them, ex. Interrogation? I mean I know the +10 from Pugilism won't decrease Sweet Talking by -10, but the thing I've been wondering is if having a high tough adjustment is taken into the equation when calculating the outcome when choosing to Sweet Talk a suspect? Hope I'm making sense of what I'm trying to ask :)

I think what you are getting at Greyling is:

"If I have a high tough score will it help my Sweet Talking final number?"

The answer to that is no, just as Crunch displayed with his numbers. You get the final score and can choose which option to use, the tough or charm. They operate independantly of each other.

And along with what Ben said about "exceptional successes" there are "exceptional failures" also where you will fail even with a very high score. At least that is my observed results.

Greyling - I got puglism not so long ago. I didnt notice any problems with my charm skills. I still mainly use sweet talking. But with female townies I might go tough.
