Subscribed players can submit their picture to be used as an avatar. Please go to city hall "submitting content to sleuth" for details on how and where to submit. Avatar changes are however a freebie donated by the sleuth team and community volunteers. Reason why it is for subscribed people only is because too many avatars were received to keep up.

The process:
1. People submit avatars which all end up on the sleuth mail server.
2. Once in a while volunteers (Secret Squirrel and myself) pick up the avatars, and get to work if there are more then 5 avatars that we can approve.
3. We approve, and "sleutherize" the pictures. This is a process I won't bore you with.
4. We send the approved and sleuthererized avatars to Ben.
5. We post in this thread who's pictures have ben sent for upload.
6. Ben uploads, and they are live.

There is no need to keep submitting your avatar if you don't hear anything. Avatars sending is as reliable as email is. And we don't log in daily, hence why we are not answering you. There is no need to PM us either as to when we are going to do them. We will get to them, when we have time. If you PM us, that's exactly what we'll tell you. Just keep your eye on this thread.

Avatars that didn't get approved will receive email as to why, and with instructions how to fix the problem. They can them make the next batch.

Common reasons for rejection:
It is already an avatar submitted by someone else in Sleuth. It is not a picture of a person, ie. cartoons, drawn pictures, animals, objects.
Extreme poor quality (too poor to even be properly visual), Pictures that may create offence, copy righted pictures, people submit an avatar for someone else, and want it to show up without that other persons knowledge or permission, not adding the detective name to which they like the avatar to be added, other pictures that are for some reason not in line with the many avatars we already see in this game.

What doesn't matter:
1. It is not a picture of yourself. People have submitted pictures from old movie stars, family (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles), friends, random searches online for photographes out of the time period of this game.
2. Color, I can change this to black and white.
3. That it is not a mug shot, but a full body picture or a pic with other people on it. I crop the face out.
4. You don't have the picture, but can provide me a link online to one.
5. If you really want an avatar up, but don't have digital pictures, or a scanner then you could snail mail it to me in the Netherlands, as I do have a scanner.
6. Size, unless the face is so small that when I enlarge the quality gets too poor.

The pictures I personally like best, are ones that are not pictures of movie stars. People who submit pictures of themselves, or pictures of unknown people. IN this batch someone added a picture their grandfather when he was young. I thought that was sooo cool!

Some movie stars seemed to be submitted a lot, there are a few that I have sleutherized in various shapes and sizes. So try to find something original yet still in line with the other avatars you see.

We'd like to have more Asian avatars.

Your avatar will be used for your detective, as well as for the suspects in the game.

Please don't post the avatar email address. This is why I deleted the old avatar news.

Please give a welcoming hand to SS!!! Our new avatar volunteer. He will do a catch up on all the avatars submitted after August 8th. The ones before that I sent to Ben for upload. Who will get around to it when he has time. Villains is eating a lot of time at the moment.

Mmm I've been through most of the submitted pics and some people will be getting emails saying 'try again', and 'please' explain. But I hope to get to them over the next few days or so, and at least get them into the system for Ben to put up. Remember no news is good news.

lol I thought we were playing 'good crop, bad crop' (ergh just a little avatar editing humour there :s)

At the mo. we just let people pick their own pic. But often you see newbie threads saying 'Where can I find a good pic for my Sleuth', so those people would be very happy for your help I reckon BL.

Really?? Think I've only ever seen one of those - *lol* - maybe I've been spending too much time slacking off in the Gumshoe Lounge :D

I'd just like to add to jstkdn's notes above:

* Note that the avatar picture is landscape and not portrait size (long and squat not tall and skinny) :D If you choose a photo that is tall and skinny then there is a lot of "dead space" on the sides we have to deal with. A good rule of thumb I've 'just' found is, if you can see both shoulders (and some space to either side ... see the photos above esp. Greylings) that usually works best.

I submitted an Avatar on July 25, 2006. It was never uploaded and I never received an email regarding it. Can someone tell me why my Avatar was not uploaded and if I have to pick a different picture. Thanks!
