Due to the success of the lateral puzzles in the "A riddle" thread, it seems appropriate to start a lateral thinking puzzle thread.

A rule of thumb to follow would be to allow those who do not know the answer to figure it out for themselves. If you happen to know the answer, please keep it to yourself and let the others have the fun.

Please feel free to start one at any point. It is not necessary to wait for one to finish before starting another one.

Have fun!

Mr. Smith was the item that Mr. Brown recovered for you a musical instrument? Was it a harmonica? A member of the woodwind family? A drum?

Mr. Smith, you aren't by chance an accordian player are you? {YES. THE BOYS WANTED TO SING LAST NIGHT AND I HAD LEFT MY ACCORDION AT HOME. I SENT BROWN TO GET IT, BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID I WOULD WAKE MY WIFE UP.}

CONSTABLE SPIKE CLEARS HIS THROAT, "I THINK WE HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION INSPECTOR , EXCEPT FOR A FEW MINOR DETAILS, TO WRAP THIS CASE UP. WOULDN'T YOU AGREE?"

(This is wonderful, shell marple, too bad i only see it now. great stuff!)

Let me do a bit of conclusion and try to get the minor details:
Mr. Smith:
- you promised your wife to get home by midnight yesterday.
- but you and the boys wanted to sing last night, so you asked Mr. Brown to retrieve your accordion from under your bed.
- you expected your wife to be asleep.

Mrs. Smith:
- but you were not asleep or was awaken by the sound Mr. Brown made.
- you have already turned off the light so you thought logically that it was Mr. Smith who was in the room.

Mr. Brown:
- you retrieved the accordion but was held on by Mrs. Smith?
- did you have sex with Mrs. Smith so that she would not find out her husband wasn't home?
- did you see this as an opportunity to have sex with a woman, no strings attached?

Mr. Smith:
- did you find out about the sex today from what Mrs. Smith said, and hence got angry and hit Mrs. Smith?
- did you then went to see Mr. Brown and got into a fight with him about this?

Mrs. Smith:
- after finding out it wasn't Mr. Smith last night, did you come to me immediate to report the rape?
- did you realize what had happened when your husband and Mr. Brown came into the station together and hence like to withdraw the allegation?

Constable Spikes, am i (are we) missing anything else?

(Thank you Mr. Zeo, I'm glad you are enjoying it, sorry you didn't see it sooner.)

Let me do a bit of conclusion and try to get the minor details:
Mr. Smith:
- you promised your wife to get home by midnight yesterday. {YES, THAT IS CORRECT}
- but you and the boys wanted to sing last night, so you asked Mr. Brown to retrieve your accordion from under your bed. {YES INSPECTOR, BUT THERE WAS ONE OTHER WEE PROBLEM WITH MY RETURNING HOME}
- you expected your wife to be asleep. {YES, I WAS AFRAID I WOULD WAKE HER, BUT I ALSO FELT THAT MR. BROWN WOULD NOT.}

Mrs. Smith:
- but you were not asleep or was awaken by the sound Mr. Brown made. {NO, I WAS ASLEEP, BUT WAS WAKENED BY SOMETHING ELSE}
- you have already turned off the light so you thought logically that it was Mr. Smith who was in the room. {YES, WHY WOULD I EVER THINK THAT SOMEONE OTHER THAN MY HUSBAND WOULD BE IN OUR BEDROOM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.}

Mr. Brown:
- you retrieved the accordion but was held on by Mrs. Smith? {I DID RETRIEVE IT, YES. BUT MRS. SMITH WAS STILL ASLEEP SO SHE COULD NOT HAVE HELD ON TO ME}
- did you have sex with Mrs. Smith so that she would not find out her husband wasn't home? {NO}
- did you see this as an opportunity to have sex with a woman, no strings attached? {YES, SORT OF. I WAS NOT EXACTLY THINKING CLEARLY}

Mr. Smith:
- did you find out about the sex today from what Mrs. Smith said, and hence got angry and hit Mrs. Smith? {YES}
- did you then went to see Mr. Brown and got into a fight with him about this? {YES. I THOUGHT HE WAS A FRIEND I COULD COUNT ON}

Mrs. Smith:
- after finding out it wasn't Mr. Smith last night, did you come to me immediate to report the rape? {YES}
- did you realize what had happened when your husband and Mr. Brown came into the station together and hence like to withdraw the allegation? {YES}

Constable Spikes, am i (are we) missing anything else? {FROM THE SOUNDS OF THEIR ANSWERS, MAYBE A THING OR TWO. BUT BASICALLY I THINK THE MAIN POINTS HAVE BEEN COVERED. }

(I think this is pretty near the conclusion. Ask more questions if you'd like to tie up the loose ends, and then go ahead and give your conclusions. In a couple of days I will post the finale answer.)
