Due to the success of the lateral puzzles in the "A riddle" thread, it seems appropriate to start a lateral thinking puzzle thread.

A rule of thumb to follow would be to allow those who do not know the answer to figure it out for themselves. If you happen to know the answer, please keep it to yourself and let the others have the fun.

Please feel free to start one at any point. It is not necessary to wait for one to finish before starting another one.

Have fun!

I think I need to clarify something. They were not looking for a different response. They were interested in the response. I don't want to give too much away, so if this is still not clear, let me know and I'll throw a little more light on it.

Or were the askers doctors or nurses who were asking this to see if a person with a head injury was all right? (You know--like "What's today's date?" etc.)

Was this some form of aptitude test in interviews (Some companies often ask people why manhole covers are round in interviews)?

I think this is turning out to be much more difficult than I anticipated. To review what has been discovered so far as well as what's relevant, here is a compilation of some questions and answers:

can we assume that for purposes of this riddle, Mickey Mouse's girlfriend is Minnie Mouse?
[Yes, Mickey Mouse's girlfriend is Minnie. ]

Did the grown men know Minnie was Mickey's girlfriend before they asked? [Yes] After they asked? [Yes]

Aside from being mentioned in the men's question, is Mickey Mouse present in the riddle? [No]

Did the men expect people to answer "Minnie"? [Yes] "Minnie Mouse"? [Yes] relevant? [Yes]

Were the men attempting to accomplish a goal [Yes] ... finding out if people knew who Mickey's girlfriend was? [Yes]

Is the name Minnie more important than the character Minnie in this riddle? [No]

the men were attempting to accomplish something other than determining if people knew who Mickey's girlfriend was? [Yes]

Were the men trying to get people to say the word Minnie for some reason? [Yes]

Does the location have anything substantial to do with Disney? Such as Disneyland or Walt Disney World? [No to all]

Based on a true story? [Yes]

Are the identities of the people they were asking relevant in any way? [Yes]

Is this story something famous enough that the average person stands a good chance of knowing about it? [I consider myself average and I didn't know.]

Were the grown men attempting to prove something by asking the question? [Yes]

Are the identities of the questionees relevant [Yes], appearance [Yes], geographic location [Yes]?

Other than Mickey/Minnie Mouse, is Disney relevant in any way? [No]

Is the location fictional? [No] On North America [Yes*] ? South America? Europe [Yes*]? Asia [Yes*]? Africa [Yes*]? Australia? Elsewhere [Yes*]? [The rest: No]

*The answer I have doesn't place it in a specific location, but taking the answer into consideration and researching it, these are the places where it could have occurred.

did they ask to see people's reactions? [Yes]

But there was *something* relevant about the askers' clothing, correct? [Yes]

Were the askers all wearing the same clothing? [Yes] Did the clothing have some kind of message, either overt or implied? [I wouldn't say the clothing had a message.]

Was the clothing some kind of recognizable uniform? [Yes]

If the clothing was some kind of uniform, was it the type that specifically belonged to people in a specific job? [Yes] career? [Could be] specific job type? [Yes]
