One of the main reasons the "youth" spell that way is that no one has ever made them learn how to spell correctly. (Yes, I understand that limited space on texting also contributes to the need for shortcuts, but these kids can't spell anyway.)

Our "enlightened" education system fears shattering the "self esteem" of our children too much to actually correct them...let alone TEACH them.

i agree with you cfm. the only reason some of us actually succed is our parents, who r often too busy to teach us anything.

Becky :), I'm sure the way you type is very familiar to your peers and the culture you share, but I grew up in a time when there was not something called the internet and hardly anyone owned a personal computer. I have assimilated somewhat to the language of the internet, but, like many others here who grew up in the pre-internet culture, prefer to use the English we have grown up with, which is a Modern Standard version as opposed to the very newly developed net lingo that you type in. Also, since there are people here who use English as a second language, as a courtesy, we should try to maintain a standardised method of communication. It seems best to use a Modern Standard version as a lingua franca for this board, which is what most people would learn in their schools be it as their first or second language.

So some people truly do not understand the way you type because they just don't know that way of typing. With the way you choose to spell your words and your grammar and punctuation, it can be very confusing to some people and it takes a level of translation for even a native English speaker which would give it the feeling of being annoying to read.

And honestly, I don't even understand the difference in typing "mi vs. my" or "bi vs. by" or "was vs. wuz" or "what vs. wat" or "fur vs. for" because its pretty much the same amount of letters with twice the confusion. please explain?

Any suggestions on this board regarding language have been to help you find a way to clearly express yourself in a way we understand so that we can all fully enjoy your posts on this forum. Any jokes made are because we at Sleuth have the irresistable urge to make jokes about every other word that comes out of someone's mouth; they were not because we don't care or don't like you. Just ignore our cheekiness as it is all in jest ; )

Well I'm sorry that I'm annoying and you don't like me, becuase usually I take those things veery personally. I'm fairly new here, and I didn't know there was this "code" of respect. I am just adapting to my culture, and this is how everyone else at school types, so really to me this is not at all unusual. Maybe I don't understand why YOU type "my" instead of "mi" or "was" instead of "wuz" on the computer. If you people really dont want me to comment at all on threads anymore, please just say so instead of acting like you are trying to help me.

Thank You,
Becky

To answer your question, we type "my" instead of "mi" and "was" instead of "wuz" because that is how they ARE spelled. I would think that someone who wishes to be an English major would already know that, and understand it.
