But, I do have some questions about the hints.
When someone says "So and so suspect has not heard or seen anything suspicious," does that mean they didn't do it? It not, what does that imply?
When someone says "So and so suspect thinks he knows who the murderer is," what is that telling me? To ask him or her about whichever suspect I think it is??

When a townie says that a particular suspects hasn't heard or seen anything it means you don't have to bother to check for witness evidence with that person.
When a suspect thinks he knows who the murderer is, you might have a CHANCE that he will provide you witness evidence.

and, no. not having seen or heard anything does NOT mean they are innocent. It just means they don't have anything on anyone else. Also, there will be witness evidence on two people in any given case. 2 will point to the guilty party and one will point to an innocent person with a good alibi.

you might wonder why it matters to know who does and who doesn't have info,
why not just ask them all?
but when the suspect will only answer one question it becomes very handy
