You get money by doing cases and being paid by the client. You get gear by doing favour cases for the towns people. After you correctly complete three cases go to a towns person and ask them if you can do them a favour. After you correctly complete this case they will give you some gear as a gift.

You can sell the gear you got from favors, if its not usefull to your detective. Thats were the big money is coming from ;)
