I currently have the opportunity to purchase the abovementioned skill. I would like to know what skills would be better than it.

It depends on what skills you already have. I find it pretty usefull skill cause it gives you extra suspects. But I wont recomend it before the basic interview skills and smart skills. Those are essential if you want to do higher levels. Hypnotism is deffinatly nice to have, but its not a must.

I think many skills are better than hypnotism. I wouldn't advise getting it just because you can. I know that I have been slowly, ever so slowly getting my last skills and have regretted getting hypnotism so early in my experience when the skill points still came quickly. Without knowing what skills you don't have yet, it's hard to advise specifically, but getting all your interview skills along either the tough or charming path as reda says is important, along with some key smarts skills. As a rule, all the faction skills should come later, most agree.

Looking at your level of experience, it is far too soon to get Hypnotism. I have only just got it myself, and although I find it very useful, the other skills I got before it were more necessary that it is. As the above players have stated, concentrate on getting all your basic Smarts & Charm skills before going for the advanced faction skills. Also there is one basic Tough skill that is useful even for a Charming detective - Lock Picking.
