to quit or not to quit?

If you've failed to pinpoint a suspect and all leads have clammed up, is it better to deliberately make a false accusation (knowing you can get it expunged from the record) or just quit? What effects on your detective does either failing or quitting have?
Also - if it turns out that continuing a case with have an adverse effect on your standing with a faction that you want to be on good terms with (even though it improves your relations with another) , is it better to quit the case?
And finally (promise!) when you buy/get equipment, does the effect it have simply make skills cost less, or makes it more likely that that you will be more successful when you employ those skills?
Thanks!!!!

If you are stuck, you better quit. Quits dont have any affect on your detective (except maybe pride). Falses can be cleared but it costs a lot and gets more expensive as you go on. And if you forget or cant clear them in time (cause you dont have the money) you might loose your detective.
So just quit!
If you get a case for a faction you dont want you have two options. You quit it or (if in agency) save it for someone else.

Equipment doesnt make skills cost less. It just improves your chances when using the coresponding skills.

Well, the difference between failing and quitting is that if you quit a case, then you've quit it and that's it - no chance of getting the reward or the experience points, and it stays on your record permanently - however, it doesn't hurt your detective in any way whatsoever. Taking the chance and guessing on a case where you're just not sure can, however, get you a false, which can end up costing you dearly - get 3 of those and your detective gets retired. But this can be avoided by getting Mr. Shady to clear your record of any falses (usually after 2 since the price will be the same). However, as you gain more experience, the price for clearing your record goes up so even though you may find the risk worth taking to start with, guessing can steepy later on.

As for cases that affect your standings with the factions. It depends. I'd say that if you're already in with the faction you're going for, completing a case that goes against them won't matter much as such a case will just take you down 1 point which you can always make up for by doing the little daily job, which will give you 4 points. However, if you're struggling to gain access to a faction then unless you're in an agency, where the other members can help you with swapping cases depending on which faction you want to go for, I'd say quitting would be the only way to get on their good side.

As for equipment, it enhances the chance of success when employing the various skills you have :)

As a rule of thumb: Never ask yourself that question. Just quit.
