Detective Biography

I had spent my childhood surrounded by books, of which crime and mystery novels were my favorites. I could imagine no greater pleasure than to curl up in bed with a compelling novel, and to forgo my usual compulsion to read its last page first in order to better savor the surprise of the final reveal. As I grew older, I became enthralled with a different kind of detective, one which was represented to me in films where travelling the world and searching for treasure were to be a delectable imperative.

My natural predilections for intrigue, adventure, and deductive thinking were to lead me down a path which was to slowly dull my imagination and openness of spirit, and which was to expose me to a world, which, far from the cosmopolitan life I had always dreamt of being associated with, was to surround me with the petty jealousies, rivalries and politics of mundane people of my profession: that of researcher at the University. May God save me from their self-serving machinations! I had seemed to have forged a second persona for myself. I wandered from room to room with a smile plastered upon my face, keeping antagonism to a minimum, until I felt my mind and senses, which had grown dull from day-to-day repetition, to begin to think and behave in a way similar to those I considered to be hidden enemies. And that worried me greatly. It was important that I keep my job, but not at the expense of losing my soul. I knew that I was charming and intelligent, and I had a remembrance of being fearless and tough, one which may not have been a merely vicarious experience.

One day, a friend of mine who was associated with a political group which was active in my hometown, and which went by a mysterious name, asked if he could speak to me privately. He was one of the "colorful" characters I liked to maintain in the periphery of my life, one which lent vividness to my otherwise dull circle of necessary friends and acquaintances with which one was to be surrounded. I, of course, welcomed his invitation, only happy for the opportunity of momentary escapism which his interviews allotted me. At my great surprise, he began our interview by a praise of my character and of the long friendship we had had, stating that they had given him good reason to trust and confide in me. He spoke to me of an incident, one which details I shall not divulge presently, and he asked for my help and discretion in using my lab to analyse some DNA evidence which had been left at the scene. I felt myself transported to an alternate reality, where I was functioning not as my self, but as my higher self, one which rose above the minor details of life with great ease. I assented readily to his request, and we made our way back to the lab in the thick of the night. How great was my friend's surprise when I took to the task with zeal and ease, and how great was mine to have found, in the depths of my self, a hidden vocation.
