Detective Biography

Growing up as the son of Irish immigrans in the slums of Chicago left a kid with few ways out of poverty and squalor. If you were tough enough, you could join one of the many gangs, a career path that led to positions as mob enforcers for some. But that was a path that all too often ended up behind bars or six feet under. And the inner circle, the coveted status of "Made Man" was not given to people with names that did not end with vowels.

Even as a young kid Ben Brookes was smart enough to know that, and he also knew that he was neither tough enough to become an enforcer, nor stupid enough to be content with that thuggish lifestyle. Ben would not take orders from some rich ponce, Ben would be the rich ponce giving orders to others. He knew that he could use his smarts and charm to rise in the world, much higher than his fists could take him. All that he needed was an opportunity.

While his friends and brothers ran errands as opium couriers and lookouts, Ben spent his time reading, first the old newspapers that vendors at the market used to wrap meat and fish, later books that he stole wherever he could. He also practiced his charms on the girls of the neighborhood, which worked better than he anticipated. But the consequence was that he then had to learn to talk his way out of sticky situations, once the girls' fathers found out.

At twenty-three, with a dozen men demanding of him to do 'the honorable thing' and two dozen men demanding bloody satisfaction, Ben saw himself trapped between matrimony and death, a choice that did not seem like a real choice to him at all. So he decided to relocate to New York, to use his skills to make some real money. He figured that the life of a detective, so glamorous in the penny dreadfuls, would be perfect for him. He had grown up around criminals, so he was not afraid of tangling with them. He knew the streets, and New York was not so different from Chicago after all. Soon he had found a place to stay, a small office, and his first case.

But while he is solving small cases of lost dogs and stolen watches, Ben has never given up on his goal. To strike it big, so big that he can go and eat out in a different restaurant each day, with a different pretty girl on his arm every time. He knows he will get there, all it takes is that one real break..
