If you were to ask my dear Mama about me, you'd get the impression that ol' Jesse here is a genuine four star American Hero. "Fought in the war, he did! And we couldn't be more proud!"

Truth be told, all I'd done was kept my head down and served my time. My outfit was often in the thick of it, and I still had my share of close calls. I quickly learned that a sack of courage and a spot of luck will carry you through tough times, but a keen eye and a moment of thought probably would've kept you out of the whole mess to begin with. But you can't tell that to the folks in charge.

I come away from it all with a few tiny ribbons of cloth & shiny metal, the ability to tell one end of a gun from the other, and a great interest in never having so many other people in charge of my life ever again.

As my savings dwindled, I discovered that the problem with being your own boss is that it makes it that much harder to believe that the check is actually in the mail. Fortunately there's always work for a man whose stomach complains louder than his conscience. A few unsavory jobs for some less than reputable characters led me to a startling realization: looking for troublemakers isn't all that different from looking for trouble. I'd certainly never had any difficulty finding trouble. Since I knew first-hand that blood and bodies and thumping heads doesn't bother me, I pulled together my last few pennies and hung up my shingle as a P.I.
