Detective Biography

I was a new arrival in the Big Apple, and boy, was it tough. But I had to stick it out. I had a job to do. Rumour said my cousin, who'd skipped out ten years back, was working as a private eye in New York. I had to track her down. I figured if I was in the same line of work myself, maybe I'd hear a thing or two.

Well, months of hard grind and no luck, and I was about to throw in the towel. I met this girl down at the Tricky Mister a few times, found out she was in the same line of work, and she suggested maybe we should be unlucky together. Hell, she said, couldn't be worse. She had a point.

And my cousin? Who knows? Heard she might have skipped across the pond to bother the Brits. That girl certainly wants to get a long way from home.

I was in two minds about following her to Europe, but then we ran into some trouble with a certain guy who likes to throw his weight around. Better to put some ocean between us.

London was fun, but then we got an offer we couldn't refuse. India beckoned. The job was easy, the pay was great, and we liked the food. We knew it wouldn't always be money for nothing, but we thought we'd stay for a while and see what came along.

So why are we in Shanghai, you ask? It's a long story. I won't go into it here. There was an incident involving a dancing-girl, a monkey and the Governor-General's nephew...
