Detective Biography

“Forward, Detective.”

Kathryn shakily raised her arms above her head.

“Move!”

Cold air howled past her like bullets, and the bullets were likely impending.

She stood facing it, alone.

“Now, don’t make me ask you again,” the voice purred.

Slowly Kathryn obliged, dragging her left foot forward.

“That’s more like it.”

“Are you gonna kill me?” She mumbled.

“What’s that?”

“Are you gonna kill me?” Kathryn screamed. Part of it was the wind, and part of it was the fact that she was standing so far forward, but when stripped bare, those components didn’t really matter. Who sweated in the cold?

“We’ll see, won’t we, Miss Yates?” A smirk colored her throaty accent. “Or is it Miss Alhaim?”

Kathryn drew a sharp inhale, eating cold air.

Silence reigned.

“I’m going to find you, and when I do—“

A gun clicked against the nape of her neck.

Kathryn jumped and blinked as the voice suddenly became much closer.

“You’ll what. Kill me? Invite me to see the show.”

“You picked the wrong person to tangle with, Svetlana.”

“I prefer Dr. Wanstrath.”

Svetlana leaned yet further forward, cherishing every seething breath.

“I’ll always find you, Susan Alhaim. Don’t worry, though; your secret is safe with me.”

Wind asphyxiated in the sudden heat, bringing the world back to her weary eyes. Brown blurs became tables, and tables became the Tricky Mister.

She’d gone into hiding soon after that. No notice, no nothing: she had taken a corner of the city to crawl under despite all contact from the agency. Then America declared war, aptly pretending that there wasn’t a conflict until it was drawn into it. One of her detectives had enlisted for sure. The other perhaps.

Two years.

But recently she’d left her apartment as though waking from a slumber and nabbed Dr. Wanstrath in the silence with ease.

Next she decided to go undercover with an out-of-town crime syndicate to catch an even greater thorn, puzzle boxes be damned.

The Order didn’t sympathize. They kicked her out as soon as she told them what she was up to.

Kathryn dug her nails into the wood of the bar, recalling that particular conversation.

“It isn’t that we dislike you, Ms. Yates,” Joseph Hollis had patted her hand. “On the contrary, you’ve proven yourself to be of quite fine moral character. However, if you choose to mingle with other factions no matter the reason, we’re not completely sure we can trust you.”

That’s what she got for being upfront.

If they had found out about it after the fact she wouldn't have made it to the bagel vendor before being found with her throat slit—nobody from the agency, though. They had all gone their separate ways. What a lovely picture it was.

What a lovely picture her life was with each turn being more dire than the last.
