The Bejeweled Songbird
City: New York
A glamorous singer's swain dies and a fortune in jewels is missing. Is it a simple case of family fallout, or something more sinister?
It was a straight bodyguard job. I take them occasionally, if they are interesting. This one was going to be fairly interesting, anyway. I was guarding a little statuette of a songbird, studded with flashing gems. Sapphires and emeralds made a pattern of feathers on the back and wings, rubies covered the chest and belly, yellow topaz formed the legs and beak. But the eyes - the eyes were two flawless diamonds. I could hold the bird in my hand, it was so small, but I could never hope to have as much money as the little statue was worth.
